There just never seemed to be any interest in doing another Shin Godzilla movie. The Shin Universe expanded from Godzilla with Ultraman and Kamen Rider, and it seemed Toho wanted to move on from it (as they already did with the Polygon trilogy and Singular Point and Godzilla the Ride). Who knows - maybe in 10-15 years Anno will come back and make a sequel to Shin Godzilla. Meanwhile we would have gotten plenty of other Godzilla content in between. And to be honest - I'm digging -1.0 way more than Shin Godzilla. They both feel similar but -1.0 has a extra cinematic look to it. Toho must have confidence in it to push a international release so soon. |

Then again, this looks leagues better than whatever the Monsterverse is supposed to be. |

But I guess I'm always expecting there to be more, so I'm not too bothered by what direction is next. Quote:
Showa timeline (1954-1975 (canonly 1999)) Heisei timeline (1954, 1984-1995) Godzilla 2000 (ambiguous timeline) Godzilla x Megaguirus (1954, 2000) GMK (1954, 2001) Kiryu Saga (1954, 2002-2003) Final Wars (ambiguous timeline) Shin Godzilla (full reboot) Polygon trilogy (full reboot) SP (full reboot) Minus One (full reboot) Throw in the Tristar and Monsterverse full-reboots - that's 12 relaunches. All Monsters Attack is a detached entry. Myers only had 3 and a detached entry (HIII) so far. Edit: that's a good map MZ3K. Though no way is King Kong Escapes canon with King Kong vs Godzilla. |

But there are always characters who shrug off the existence of monsters despite living in a world of monsters. Plus they sure can rebuild Tokyo fast. The creators never attended for there to be any connection when they made the films, it's just fun to piece together the world. Any officially licensed books that try to make a continuity are also the author's interpretation. -- Going back on topic, Takashi Yamazaki made a statement about why he chose the post-war setting. "I have always had the imagery that Godzilla is a nuclear threat, or the shadow of war in the form of a monster. So if I was allowed to it [his own Godzilla film], I wanted to do it in that era [post WWII]. Although there was also the idea of The Great East Japan Earthquake, but Shin Godzilla had been drawn from that too vividly, and so I wanted to do it in post-war to counter that." |

It's a throwaway line towards the beginning of the film. Wasn't supposed to be taken seriously or anything. Kind of funny that whoever made that timeline map would bother to include it considering that it now suggests G'98 and its TV continuation are canon with the '54 film which is... pretty stupid.

It's crazy, I've seen so many people calling out Toho for giving us a design that's more like the Legendary one and I don't remotely see that. If anything, it looks a lot like a mix between the original Gojira one and the Heisei one. Looks pretty damn perfect to me, much better than Legendary's version (which I also like, mind you). The Heisei design is still my favorite design to this day (with G54 a close second), so this new one seems right to me. I love that he's eating a train again.
