Default Godzilla: Minus One (2023)

Quote:
All we know at this time is that Takashi Yamazaki (Lupin III: The First) is directing the new movie, which will be the 30th live action Godzilla film in Toho’s long-running franchise.
https://bloody-disgusting.com/movie/...lease-in-2023/

Rumor is that this is a period film set in the 1940's.

I've loved every recent Godzilla releases (all the Legendary movies, the anime trilogy, Shin Godzilla and the anime series), so no matter what, I'm stoked for this! Someone said in another thread that this was called Godzilla zero on set, so this seems to be some sort of origin story in the Showa area. I'm really hoping it's more horror, closer to Gojira 1954 so it can distinguish itself from the Legendary version.

We're getting a Legendary pictures Godzilla series, a new Godzilla and Kong movie and now this? Hopefully we also get a season 2 of the netflix godzilla show.
The more the Godzilla, the better.

Wish it was a sequel to Shin G, but I'll take it.

Wouldn't that render G54/Gojira moot? The selling point was a giant radioactive dinosaur mutated by the Hydrogen Bomb as a metaphor for the horrors of nuclear war. Having a Godzilla exist a decade or more before that kinda retcons it.

It also retroactively ruins Godzilla vs. Destoroyah because that was supposed to be the original Godzilla killed by the Oxygen Destroyer.

Or it could be it's own thing in it's own canon.

Likely not following any other canon.

Well, there were two famous atomic bombs i can think of that were detonated in the mid forties. :/

It's supposedly set around 1947 in postwar Japan, at least 6 years before the original Gojira. If the rumors pan out, that would make it some sort of prequel although it would still negate some of what happened or is referenced in Gojira '54 seeing as how that Godzilla was the first time a giant monster attacked Japan.

I just hope they use a rather horrifying look for Godzilla, maybe a cross between Shin, the Ride version and the '54 version. Stay away from the fat, toadlike US design and the super spikey Millennium version(s).

btw, the director did a 2-minute Godzilla cameo in his 2007 film "Always: Sunset on 3rd Street 2", finally he got to do a full Godzilla movie now

I'd like to see some new templates for the Godzilla formula as a fan. The expected formula has often been:

1. Humans going about their business or doing research.
2. Giant Monster attacks.
3. Humans have time to decide what to do next, plan things out in a war room setting or scientific setting, studying the giant beasts.
4. Godzilla or the monster fight a final battle against each other, or against the humans.
5. Godzilla returns to the ocean.

That's the general pattern since the 1950s now, and 70% of the film is focused on the humans, not Godzilla. What if something new broke up the formula and brought new ideas in?

I guess it's kind of like a sport, where you don't expect completely different rules each time a new match takes place. Fans most times, expect the same rules each time a new movie is made in a franchise like Godzilla.

While the whole thing is really cheap (and clearly a comedy), there's something really cool about seeing a evil Godzilla with GMK's white eyes. Hopefully it's a glimpse into how the director views Godzilla and we get another evil Godzilla out of this.

Ah.....takes me back to when I fell for someone's edit of that scene passing it off as a teaser for a new Godzilla film

It's hard to judge from a teaser about 30 seconds long, where probably less than half of that is footage. But some cool snippets of destruction.

I want to see the Godzilla design in full. From what I've seen so far, it's giving me Heisei vibes. Actually reminds me of the Stan Winston design, in that it's like Heisei Godzilla with a more crocodile-like skin texture.

Forbes article doesn't really specify. Wouldn't be surprised if it's through Fathom events considering they've been doing other Godzilla films lately, but it would be nice if they were aiming for a wide release.

--

Looks like Godzilla is being downscaled compared to the last few films. I'm glad they're going for a more traditional look.
