The same is true with 4 and the games taht came before it. Skipping out on 1, 2 or 3 would be like watching the epilogue of a long movie while missing a chunk of the middle. 4 isnt a normal game. It was and truly did feel like an extended epilogue to everything that came before it and thats why Konami made the right decision to release this first volume of the collection the way they did
I rewatched MGS4 Act 3 thru the ending on youtube and compiled all the MGS3 references I could notice from the cinematics.

MGS3 and MGS4 spoilers below:
[Show spoiler]Act 3 - Big Mama Exposition (20 mins cutscene)
• All verbal references to MGS3 in Big Mama’s exposiiton are vague enough that an MGS3 playthrough is neither required nor spoiled by her retelling
• Big Mama connects various MGS3 characters to being founding members of the Patriots and how their MGS1 counterparts dying in the MGS1 era were her and Ocelot exacting revenge on the other Patriot founders.
• There is a visual cue that links the image of MGS3 Eva to the image of MGS4 Big Mama towards the end of her exposition
• There are flashback cues of MGS3 Eva in various poses
• There is a long slowmo visual cue of Big Mama’s motorcycle before they make their escape
• Big Mama says repeats something she said as Eva in MGS3 about her riding a motorcycle that means nothing to Solid Snake, but it does to the audience if they’ve played MGS3. I think it has more weight if you hear the saying at the end of MGS3 after hearing it first in MGS4.
• Big Mama tells Solid Snake to call her Eva, which means nothing if you haven’t played MGS3 yet.

Act 3 - Dock Scene with Liquid Ocelot
• Big Mama exclaims ADAM to Liquid Ocelot at the dock, which is confusing if you haven’t played MGS3 yet.

Act 5 - Snake and Liquid Ocelot Fight
• Ocelot mentions some of the things about Zero and Big Boss that Big Mama already talked about in Act 3.
• One section of the fist fight covers MGS3 CQC-style fighting, which is very similar to MGS4 CQC.
• Some visual cues of young Ocelot are shown during the fight along with his “You’re Pretty Good” catchphrase when he dies.

Epilogue
• Solid Snake visits what he thinks is the grave of Big Boss, which is shown to be next to the grave of The Boss.

Debriefing
• Big Boss is carrying The Patriot gun that was The Boss’s during the final fight in MGS3
• Big Boss and Solid Snake do some CQC fighting that would make more sense if you played MGS3.
• Big Boss explains how Eva, Ocelot, and Naomi carried out their plan to put Big Boss back together and find Zero. No MGS3 knowledge is really needed here since Eva already called herself out previously.
• Big Boss mentions Zero’s intent to carry on the will of The Boss, which has already been mentioned before in MGS4 many times.
• Big Boss names off the original members of the Patriots…again
• There are some MGS3 flashbacks of Zero and Big Boss while Zero is suffocating
• Big Boss asks Solid Snake to help him over to The Boss’s grave
• There are some vague flashbacks to Naked Snake killing The Boss with the Patriot gun
• Big Boss tells Solid Snake that he killed The Boss
• There are some MGS3 flashbacks when Big Boss salutes The Boss’s grave
• The flowers around The Boss’s grave are the ones that were in the final MGS3 fight with her

The vast majority of these are Easter eggs, which do enhance the experience if you recognize them, but cannot by definition ruin the story if you don't. However, I have a profound urge to know more about The Boss, Zero, Big Boss, and the other Patriots after "watching" MGS4. Had I found out afterwards there is a continuation/spin-off to the MGS series that covers these earlier events, my past self would have been extremely excited. Instead, I was generally disappointed with MGS4 in 2008 because it didn't meet my very high expectations for it from playing the masterpiece MGS3 first.

Btw, let me know if you think the spoilers above are too spoilery for games that came out 15 and 19 years ago, even though they are in spoiler tags with additional warnings, and I'll edit this post to remove them.

I wonder about that sometimes. Would a newcomer to the series enjoy the story more in terms of release date or chronological order? I think for me knowing what I know, release date.

I got to show someone star wars 1 to 6 and they went in blind. I did the original trilogy first so they could get there mind blown by Anakin's character arc. Sometimes chronological is not best.

My guess would be a newcomer who fell in love with the gameplay would ultimately journey down the story.

If you were only mildly interested or mildly enjoyed any one or number of the games I doubt you're gonna dig around into the history of Liquid this big boss that

I prefer release order. but it doesn't really matter.

instead of Solid games / Big Boss games, I like to split the series like this

- MGS1 - MGS2 - MGS3 - MGS4

- PW - GZ - MGSV

The thing with Easter eggs is that they have no meaning if you have no idea of what they are even referencing. I guess ultimately it doesnt matter since Konami is packing the games the way it is and if anyone wants to play them in chronological order, they can wait till both volumes are out and do so. I've done that upon replaying through the entire series before. I wouldnt have wanted to do so my first time though.

From a business standpoint, I would also think they wouldnt want to release MGS3 and MGS3Remake close to each other so putting it out this fall maximizes the distance between them

As far as spoilers, well yeah anything about the games story would be considered a spoiler. I personally dont mind bc Ive played these games multiple times over the last 20 years but its not the worse idea to tag it the way you did for newcomers (which IV will have alot since its locked to the PS3)

I realize this comment is for volume 2, but I really hope they give the ability to restart MGS V over from scratch without forcing you to use a different username or delete your current game data.

Good to see this looks like it's coming to PS4. Seemed dumb that it wasn't. Now I have yet another reason not to own a PS4. Definitely getting the PS4 one if it's not digital only.

So is MGS3 ground up remake going to be a separate game coming later and the Collection is just the HD version of 2/3 along with MGS1 port + additional content?

This set is great for those who ditched their old consoles or want a 60 fps and best resolution version of these older games, all in one place. I do wish they put more effort into this set with improved textures at least, but it looks like a direct port compilation if I didn't miss more details.

Yeah I'll be happy to get MGS1 on a current gen disk/ cloud but to just get basically the 2011 HD collection again is a little annoying but the games are so good and I really haven't played since back then 11/12' so its fine.

With consoles improving resolution most of all each generation, I and some might complain about so many remasters and remakes, but it becomes understandable that many games are re-released decades later on more modern consoles with more power. Similar to how DVD movie releases, eventually get blu ray and UHD releases for fans looking for improved visuals/resolution of some favorite titles.

Id pay 70-100+ for every remake generation after generation if its a full blown remake with improvements and ground up remake like COd4, RE, Bioshock, gears, etc.

But if they're just kind'a upscaling the originals and leaving some of the decade old wonkiness (me and the frog aiming lol) in then after about 2-3 rebuys it gets a little annoying.

The only reason this is worth getting too is Konami is so crazy with his IP that if you don't get it now you might not get to play it /have it if he pulls it.

But if it were any other studio I doubt there'd be a mad rush to buy it since it would be readily available .

I think the MGS story is definitely an awesome IP for stealth action games but i definitely expect at some point, it would be nice to have some kind of full on remake for the entire series to fully enjoy the story with modern visuals and gameplay.

I know MGS3 is in the pipeline, so hopefully it does well and is the start of that attempt in earnest by Konami, but i also would love to see a full Castlevania 3D action game remake from them too as rumoured.

I'd like to see an MGS1 Remake done next, if the MGS3 one is a success.

I just think that some are going to be disappointed with the remake potentially. It sounds like it's going to be pretty much like for like, instead of being expanded on or a reimagining like the RE2 and RE4 remakes.
