Agree to disagree I guess. The OP of this news thread isn't a good OP.

Plus, all of the individual threads for each RSM release were getting posted in with discussion of the Turbine releases.

A dedicated release-focused thread with a proper thread title, in the main forum, which receives a lot more attention than the news forum, seemed like a good idea to track the Collector Series releases.

Turbine releases are always absolutely top notch in technical terms. There should be no downgrade in picture quality.

Agreed 1000%. A rare bad call from 13th IMO.

I really want to support these in hopes of future 3D releases from Turbine, but it's hard to justify double-dipping on these three movies. The only thing that might tempt me is the unique cover art and the premium Scanavo cases.

Turbine says they are "planning further 3D titles," but I have to wonder if those titles will continue to be re-releases of what we already got from RSM. Hopefully they have the ability to secure the rights to some new/previously unreleased 3D discs.

Nice. I only have a couple Turbine releases so I didn't recall the technical details. We'll see I guess. I seem to recall that RSM's Dominion filled the disc, and that was with only English audio, although I don't have the specs offhand. So they will have to sacrifice at least some disc space with this longer movie to add the extra and higher quality audio tracks. With a good encode hopefully it should still be okay, even being a 3D disc which in itself demands more space obviously compared with a 2D disc.

My order for the 3 titles is in. Did not buy these from randomspacemedia as they weren't posting to my country, so hey, let get this collection started. Very happy all titles have atmos sound, and actually like we only get the 3D disc. The amount of duplicate blu-ray I have from buying the 3D version or upgrading to 4K is absolutely ridiculous.

Actually I liked that RSM included the 2D discs. It meant I only had to buy one release to get both versions. Of course I will usually only watch the 3D version if it's available and I think that's the case for many here, but in some cases there are special features on the 2D disc, or in the case of Jurassic World: Dominion, there was the extended cut (which should have had its own disc though). And for reference such as screenshots, I also prefer to have the 2D version, since 3D versions generally involve a lot of painting.

you are fine, Atmos plays as Dolby True HD 7.1 in non-atmos equipment. Its the same as theater level Atmos plays as Dolby 7.1 in non-atmos equipment instead.

The CEO of Turbine (Phil Friederichs) said today in a Facebook comment that these are "completely newly authored discs with Dolby Atmos audio and multiple languages." There will obviously be a significant increase in audio quality, but it remains to be seen if the video bitrates are any higher. I recall that some of the RSM authorings barely took up half of the 50 GB discs (Minions: Rise of Gru was only about 27 GB in total, I think).

We'll also have to wait and see if these Turbine 3D discs are playable in 2D, like the RSM discs are. That would explain the lack of separate 2D discs in the packages.

True, I remember the same re: the animated discs, glad to hear these are newly authored discs due to the languages, so there's a chance of new encodes as well. I'm still on the fence but I guess I'll have to think about ordering these.

I imagine they will be since it's not hard, they just create a playlist with only 1 eye. As long as they don't try to jam 2 copies of the movies, both 3D and 2D, onto one disc (have seen that before, not with RSM, but with other releases). But I never want to watch in 2D from one eye of the 3D disc, since they usually aren't the original 2D, and are likely to be heavily painted and otherwise altered for 3D.

Placed my order for the set. I don't normally double-dip but wanted to show my support.

Can we change the title of this thread to something like:

'Turbine 3D Blu-ray Releases'

Well this is the news forum after all.

The original post of this thread was based on a social media post. "From the ashes" is an editorial comment and unnecessary. "Turbine to start releasing 3D blu-ray" is the news item and is accurate to the news, except for not capitalizing Blu-ray.

That's why I started a new thread "Turbine Collector Series Blu-ray 3D" in the 3D Blu-ray (release) forum, which is the name of the "series" as per Turbine, to catalogue the waves in the first post as they are released, but I guess the moderator doesn't want it.

Strictly speaking this is the news and general discussion forum.

Individual releases can be discussed in their respective threads but general Turbine discussion belongs here (or in the thread in the Germany forum), no need for additional threads.

The thread title did need updating though so that's been changed. Should Turbine release any 3D Blu-rays without Collector Series branding then the title will be updated again.

I already have all three from RSM but obviously have ordered all these too. Thanks Phil and the Turbine crew!

Turbine only works with Universal and Sony as far as potential 3D vendors, right? Just trying to keep my expectations in check. I did previously order Twister from them, which is WB in the US, but I didn't know if the same was true in Germany.

They aren't cheap to import, fully agree that it's hard to justify the double dip, I will probably have to pass for now.

I am all about supporting 3D... but they have to temper their expectations knowing that RSM released all of these.

Supporting shouldn't mean having to buy releases again. It really is too bad they didn't kick off their efforts with unreleased discs. If they had released unreleased discs, it also would have provided them with a much better idea about the true demand.

For example, let's say 1 person didn't buy them before so will buy them now, 1 person bought them before and is willing to double dip, and 1 person bought them before and isn't willing to double dip. In that scenario, they would only be seeing 2/3 of the potential demand for 3D.

At least it was probably smart to release 3 at once for a bit more variety, with Dominion being live action rather than an animated film.

Then can’t we please move this entire thread to the other (more well-traveled) section, since it’s dealing with 3-D Blu-ray releases?

That wouldn't be consistent - studio and label threads are all in the general forum as the discussion in those is more general even if it does also cover 3D Blu-ray releases. The location also allows them all to be pinned to make them easier to find, that would not be the case in the movie forum.

Perhaps they didn't have a choice on this ? those 3 is what Universal initially gave to them and based on how good sales/demand is they can give them more choices after. We have no idea how the demand in Europe for 3D is, there's a lot of people that don't use this forum here for us to use as a metrics, also there's is a lot of people out there that didn't even know about those releases through RSM, or if they knew they failed/couldn't buy those but can and will buy now.

Actually in the main Blu-ray Movies - North America (releases) subforum of this site, the label threads are in that main releases forum, and stickied. So if you take the biggest and most popular subforum on this site as the example or as the standard, that’s how it’s done, and I don’t know why it should be any different here. Anyway, I’ll let it rest and agree to disagree as mentioned, but if you want consistency, you should follow the convention of the rest of this site.
