Do we think they may start releasing The Bill? Really regret not getting them at the time!

I saw some of the original ITV UK showings. Then I watched every episode on DVD, something like 500 hours! (or whatever 692 eps at 45 mins each adds up to).

It definitely needs a new remaster from the original masters. The original DVDs weren't from the best masters and there were minor cuts/edits to remove bad picture/sound dropouts and gate slams (ad breakers) were usually shortened, end credits were usually edited to remove the original Network 10 logo.

Nice! That's on the want list. Can't stand watching it on ITVX, also French Fields seems to have been removed for no reason (or paywalled?).

Homicide is such a good series. I already have the Shout Factory release but if I didn't I'd be picking this up in a heartbeat!

Seems fine https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0D4YY9S9M/

Something odd with all links in the first post I have to use [url="http://"] to make them clickable.

It's no longer streaming, weird.

It was on my buy list at some point to pick it up in one of Network's sales, but Network is no more.

I think Vyvyan of The Young Ones would have a highly articulate outburst about Fresh/French Fields, Anton Rodgers and Julia McKenzie being so bloody nice and loveable middle class stereotypes, which he hates, as he expresses here about The Good Life.

Yep the physical media release is great, all complete and present. The problem is streaming media again. Fresh Fields and French Fields were both on ITVX at one point. French Fields has disappeared entirely and for no reason. Another win for physical media.

Mentioned it elsewhere, ITVX has previous. They removed an entire episode of Watching because of an inappropriate episode (well, that's my guess anyway as the ending is non-pc in 2024). Also mentioned prior is Goodnight Sweetheart is censored due to a (thankfully dead IRL now) paedo scumbag being in it. DVD is the only way to own both shows fully uncut afaik.

Worth pointing out that Watching has different music in some episodes too, possibly due to rights issues maybe? Only way to get them as God intended is to track down original broadcast recordings or masters.

ITVX is a bit liberal in it's willy nilly censorship. Viva the physical disc.

+1

Having physical media is like having your own independent TV channel/archive, it takes time, money and space, but it is there to watch when you want. No third party risk.

Will the airbrushing/erased out of history of Sir Scumbag (friends with high level establishment) get to the level that even the rare mentioning of him in jokes or reference, for example, in Only Fools and Horses and Minder get censored?

Another bonus of having a physical collection one does not have to watch the funeral plan and donkey charity adverts to ad nauseam.

It's the other scumbag in Goodnight Sweetheart. The one who apparently could draw.

Then there's that other useless excuse for stealing the world's oxygen. Doesn't make watching Sliding Doors any less cringe, but at least I have the film uncensored on Blu Ray. I don't think it was ever cut for the boat scene, but you never know. Look at The French Connection and taking liberties with the script.

No point erasing the past. That's just unnecessary meddling imho. Same with things like horse falls. It doesn't make those scenes easy to stomach, but it was how things were done. Why erase it from memory as if it never happened. Same goes for Cannibal Holocaust. That one I prefer to watch minus the animal cruelty but it's nice the option is there to see it as it was originally made, whether you agree with it or not, it's good to have the choice and to make our own decisions, not having them made for you by a faceless board or corporation.

Thank you for the clarification. I am not up on Goodnight Sweetheart. There was an urban legend circulating about that certain well-known personality decades before they got banged up in the nick.

An Australian in showbiz told me about Rolf three years before he was arrested, saying that the reason he’d come to England in the 50s was partly to escape enraged fathers of schoolgirls.

I didn’t believe her.

United Kingdom Potential future releases

I'm wondering if Old Gold Media will release the complete 4-series run of Metal Mickey as Network released Series 1 and 2 (I have Series 1, but never got round to Series 2 although it is available on Amazon). Also, the same with The Two of Us (Nicholas Lyndhurst/Janet Dibley) as Network released Series 1 in 2010, but never released Series 2-4.

Chance in A Million was previously released by Revelation Films, (whose release did NOT feature the pilot epsiode) who also previously released Series 1-3 but not 4-9 of the Children's ITV show T-Bag which was another Fremantle property.

The Chance In A Million DVDs did indeed have the (unbroadcast) pilot episode, sourced from a VHS tape from the writers' collection.

Worth clarifying that Old Gold don't have an option on the entire Network catalogue - it's just Fremantle (inc ex Thames and Talkback) properties from Network (and Revelation) due to the rights on the OOP commercial release packages fully reverting to the parent company. Network's biggest deal was with ITV Studios, which is not covered here.

I'd love it if they finally put out all of The Two Of Us. Also The Piglet Files volume 3 which was rare as hens teeth long before Network went under.

Never knew Network put out T-Bag. Was it a complete run?

Note to non-UK/Ireland folks, T-Bag was a children's show, not something rated R18 on the shelves in Soho 'retail outlets'.

If memory serves, Metal Mickey was LWT, so that would seem to count it out.

Rumours are mostly bollocks, but every so often they are true.

They didn't. It was Revelation Films. They managed 3 series before pulling the schedule. Series 4 was advertised but never actually issued IIRC. A box set was promised after the individual series releases were cancelled and that never turned up either.

Really annoying, because they were just about at the ones I can remember well from being a kid! Turn on to T-Bag is the first one I have vivid memories of. Before then I have hazy memories, I'm sure I remember watching some of the first series due to memories of one of the sets but I'd have been very young. Then again, my childhood memory isn't totally to be trusted, as I have a memory of Deirdre Barlow being bitten by a snake or iguana in Corrie (I actually just think that was seeing the affair storyline with Mike and seeing Deirdre in distress, my young mind imaginatively made up the rest to reconcile it with my limited child knowledge. I probably couldn't cope with Ken getting her by the throat without having any understanding of why he would do that!)
