I watched it a couple months ago and it is riddled with white specks of dirt, but other than that it's a solid transfer. I would think it might get a new 4K master eventually.

I just wonder if the demand is there. M. Night has a bad reputation, especially after that Avatar disaster. I wish people would give The Village a chance. I really enjoy that one, too.

Yep I'm that guy that's resurrecting an old thread! Just randomly thought about the movie this morning after seeing a compilation of directors talking about working with Joaquin Phoenix (who by the way, I completely forgot was in the movie). I haven't seen it since it first came out in theaters. The ending kinda ruined it for me but I do remember liking certain parts of the rest of the movie. Decided to give it a second shot and ordered it from Bull Moose this morning.

I badly want this and Unbreakable on 4K. This has an inoffensive, filmic transfer but is just very dated on a large 4K display in terms of clarity and fineness of grain/detail.
Unbreakable imo, looks nice at first glance. But motion is smeared likely due to grain management, brighter scenes have "sticky" grain and there's this odd grid-like appearance to a handful of scenes. I do wonder whether Disney will ever cough up for these. Seems like sacrilege if they're forever resigned to subpar transfer/encodes. Sixth Sense is good too and I have a real soft spot for Lady In The Water (Warner), but for me, Signs and Unbreakable are peak Shyamalan; they're really nostalgic for me too. Would love to see his early stuff get more respect on physical media. What's pretty crazy is that The Village hasn't even had a bog-standard Blu-ray release. Given the recent pairing of Disney with Criterion; and the hope that it'll open up more Disney-owned catalogue titles to Criterion, such as former Touchstone/Buena Vista properties. I thought I'd do some mockups of Shyamalan's first five movies with reversible covers plus a box set.

Worth noting that Signs was 'ol Touchstone's absolute highest performing movie at the domestic box office and their 4th highest performing on the worldwide box office. It was also an excellent performer on home video.
The Sixth Sense is Shyamalan's highest grossing and most profitable movie, but Signs is comfortably in second. $408m in it's time, or $690m with a conservative inflation adjustment. I understand Disney are stingey on home video now, but they're totally incompetent if they can't make a small profit on a Signs physical release; or even better, a wider Shyamalan Legacy Collection. If they don't wanna do it fine, but if they're not gonna make the product anyway, I don't get the mindset of locking these things people love away in a vault while we're left to lap up whatever now-mediocre scraps they've put out in the past. Just license it.. even charge a small premium if necessary. Most important thing is this stuff gets scanned, archived, faithfully mastered and made available in good form to the (relative) masses. |

I still can't believe we don't have The Village on Blu-ray! I love Signs but The Village is my favorite Shyamalan film. Maybe when Disney decides to take physical media more seriously we'll see a release of The Village, at least I'm hoping!
