That's right. Tired of waiting for the BD, I bought the HD version from Prime. The A-V quality is perfectly fine and it looked good on my 65" OLED. I don't think it is any technical issue that is preventing the BD release; must be some sort of rights problem or Boyle holding out for 4K.

In any case while good, the film is not a classic. Now that I have a 'watching' HD copy, I am not going to get the media disc unless it is 4K.

If there are no rights, licensing issues regarding a Blu-ray release I can't think of what else it could be other than Boyle himself or the studio.

This reminds me of what happened with 1492: Conquest Of Paradise everyone thought rights, licensing issues and it turns out they license it out to Kino Lorber.

Sometimes it's just the studio being disinterested in doing a BD release, I hope they license it out to Arrow or Shout.
The Beach is a very different case than 1492. 1492 made it to home video before DVD was launched and never had a DVD release from Paramount themselves, that's why they licensed it.

The Beach had a DVD reissue in 2003, which is still available for purchase. It hasn't been reissued again, even on DVD, since BD was launched. Boyle continued working for Fox until 2013's Trance, so I don't think it's him blocking the release. Trance even has a featurette about Boyle's career at Fox.

My guess is that there are some rights issues blocking a BD release.

The film was not particularly

Good points, I actually did forget but knew that 1492 didn't have a DVD release prior. The Beach had a DVD release so yes it would be my guess it's possibly a rights issue holding up a Blu-ray release.

This was announced for a UK release on BD and it never happened, it even had a date. I had preordered it, they never updated the release date and it got cancelled.

It's a good thing there is a digital option because there would be plenty of people posting here wondering, what the.

I'd forgot a UK BD was announced. It most certainly sounds like rights issues, then.

There are no rights issues. Fox paid for the movie and own it worldwide. If there were rights issues, it wouldn’t be available to buy digitally.

Fox just don’t give a hoot, and now that they’re under Disney, they give even less of a hoot.

The US had a release date too. It was around the same time if not the same.

Is Leo proud of the film? I feel he has enough pull to hold up a release.

I remember when this film was about to come out and there was hype- then the mostly if not all reviews rolled in...negative.
Movie bombed and I waited till it came out on yes VHS.
When people praise a movie and I see it and it sucks I get mad...however, the opposite happens when critics pan a film & I go in expecting a turd and it ends up being good.
The Beach isn’t terrible but the cinematography I remember was spectacular.
The soundtrack was pretty rad too but that’s 20 years ago so this probably hasn’t aged well.

Can't believe The Beach still isn't on Blu Ray. Has been my #1 Blu Ray want for years. Could this be the first film ever to skip a Blu Ray release and get a 4k UHD one?

Nope, it's owned by Disney now and locked away in the Disney vault, along with the rest of the Fox catalog.

Not only will it certainly not get a UHD, it'll probably never get a BD, sadly.

It's far more likely that the DVD will remain the only ever release of it on disc.

The only way to see it in HD is to buy it digitally.

I keep hearing that about Disney-why do they never release physical media?

Disney+ have just announced their 'adult friendly' service STAR will be adding many Fox titles to its streaming catalogue in March - one title caught my interest - The Beach!

Could be more news to come but it's a start...I assume HD only?

Unfortunately, it looks like this streaming service is only available outside the US.

Why doesn't Disney just license this out? I am sure Kino Lorber, Arrow or Shout would love to release this on Blu-ray.

If true this is heartbreaking. Not just for The Beach but for all the movies Disney is holding hostage from ever being released.

Well...maybe in the year 2032 The Beach will finally be available in HD/4K on disc. This is ridiculous.

Maybe after the recent news of Criterion releasing Wall-E 4K (Disney/Pixar) is a sign that they're now considering licensing more out.
