I'm at the point now where it's worth waiting the 3 or 4 months for the Blu-ray version. Especially when it comes to animation.

With the average film projector at the theatres these days, the quality is rather disappointing. Can't wait till they get replaced with digital projectors.
Bingo. I saw Shrek the 3rd twice in a single day. The first was on film, and it looked terrible. I went to another auditorium showing Shrek in DLP and it was like watching the movie for the first time. The picture was bright, sharp, noise free, the colors were VERY vibrant, and the sound(uncompressed PCM) was nothing short of stunning.

Animation should be projected using Digital projectors. Film should be shown on film projectors.

Ditto. Haven't seen it, but have it pro-ordered. Going to try to do the same thing with the new Pirates movie.

300 was my first movie I saw on a digital projector and it the PQ was just as good has Blu-ray. A few weeks later I saw 300 at an IMAX theater, which was also my first time, I wasn't impress at all. Digital Projectors are 10 times better.

When 300 was out my theater had only 2 digital projectors, by the time Spider-Man 3 came out they were completely digital.

I know what you mean about this. The first movie I went to see a movie that was Digitally Projected was "Once Upon a Time in Mexico". They shot the movie in HD. The same thing they used on Star Wars: Phantom Menace, a few shots that is.
The image quality was awesome. You never get the film specs or film dust you would usually from film transfers.
Maybe this is the next step to getting a better image quality in theaters.
If any of you get a chance to see a movie digitally projected, you should. You might want to check with your local theaters to see if they offer it. I live in Arizona, and I believe only a selected few had the option of watching movies in a digital projected image. I think Shrek 3 has some theaters that offer it. I would think this would be the latest to be in a DI format.

Anyways, thats my 2 cents.

BluFive, has made a good short accurate comment. In general most movie theaters have run down poor quality projectors and/or audio systems. It is hard to find a theater that is THX certified also. Some of the THX certified theaters end up losing their certification since they do not keep up with required maintenance and improvements of equipment.
Most theaters are run down and a BLU-RAY 1080P movie will look and sound better compared to the average movie theater. 70MM and 35MM film is 4K quality or better when the right film stock is used. When more theaters start going to 4K digital projection equipment or perhaps IMAX 8K quality then the movie theater experience will be much better compared to BLU-RAY as long as the kids and parents are not talking and using cell phones.
Just like back in the 50”s when movie theaters went to widescreen to attract people to the theater who were buying 4:3 TV’s, in the 21st century movie theaters will be moving to 4K projectors with true high quality 3-D movies in the coming years. Hopefully 8K quality 3-D IMAX theaters will catch on if hit movies are made in the format.

Personally I would rather see bigger higher quality screens at the theater compared to dozens or more low quality small screens crammed into the same building. Perhaps there might still be a market for big high quality theaters that use 4K projectors or 8K IMAX screens. If the quality is there people would be willing to pay an extra $2 a ticket to watch hit movies in quality theaters.

That said, I still plan on bringing the family to see Shrek 3 this week.

well you have to look at this way the screen in movie theatres is usually 50 feet compare to 50 inches. Was the screen DLP or lousy regular screening?

what movie theatres should do is show movies close to ultra hd something people won't normaly get on home theatres

First of all please forgive me but I did pay good money to go see the new Fantastic 4 at the cinema.

Why am I posting in this thread? Well first of all the movie was preceeded by the usual "Don't buy pirate movies, bad picture quality etc etc". Finally the movie came on and the projectionist must have been asleep. The picture was slightly out of focus and the bottom missed the screen so that some of the titles were not readable!

Then, about 15 minutes in, one of the bulbs in the projector blew! It was about 7 more minutes before they turned off the projector and another 20 before the film came back on ... and about 15 minues further into the film!

What a truly terrible experience. If the cinema had digital projection, I'm sure that even if the blub had gone, the issues wouldn't have been as severe with the film starting again where the bulb had blown.

That cinema needs a serious overhaul!

I go to see movies at the ArcLight theatre in Hollywood where they have top of the line projectors and people running them that know what they're doing. The PQ there is every bit as good as BD.

I think movie theatres are killing the movie theatre experience.

When I went to see The Fantastic Four it had only been released for a week and the digital sound already produced digital noise at one moment in the movie. I'd rather prefer analogue noise over digital as it is less loud and doesn't contain high pitches.
Picture Quality was bad from start to finish. The projectionist did not a good job to focus the movie. It was so much out of focus you would get a headache.

So not caring about their product I have to say that movie theaters are killing the experience themselves.
At home I get a picture did is well-focused, a well taken care of scratch-less disc with a much lower price per person per view.

LOL...I remember when I went to watch superman returns.

The projectionist put the film in backwards. We didn't notice initally, because it is the shot in space flying around.........until the titles came up on screen........someone had to go let them know it was screwed up.

He/she fixed it, and then it came back on...stopped it, had to rewind...waited
Started it again, and there was no sound. Had to stop and rewind again, and finally got to watch the movie....
