I would say it is better than most people say. The problem with Shyamalan's films is that the trailer sells a movie vastly different than the finished product. Most of the "gruesome violence" the film boasts happens in the film's first five minutes (not a spoiler). Go in with the expectation and understanding that this will be a human drama, you will not be disappointed.
I will purchase it tomorrow. I liked it enough to purchase it, but I'm still conscious of the damn $30 price tag. I'd like to nix that digital copy and knock off a few bucks. I've been comparing this to Night of the Living Dead, if it was made after Dawn and Day. After seeing all that the zombie genre can be, it is hard to settle into such a micro plot and focus more on the human drama than the threat to mankind. The Happening is the same case. We're so used to apocalyptic, visually stimulating blockbusters, we forget how the minimal qualities of a film like Night of the Living Dead can be effective in unique ways. |

I thought the picture and sound quality were good but I wouldn't use it to demo either one.
I didn't think the movie was terrible as many have been saying and for the most part, I liked it. The only real issue I had with it, is that it was kind of hard for me to accept Mark Whalberg in that role at times (since it was pretty different for him). Even though I liked it, I do agree with others that have been saying to rent it first since it may not be what you expect. |

arghhh. So is no one having trouble with this blu-ray?
i bought this today and the menu comes up and everything but when you go to play the movie or any of the special features the screen goes black and just stays there. i even let it sit there for 10 minutes since i know sometimes it takes a while but nothing. I also have the last available firmware upgrade for my player that i downloaded when Day Watch was released recently. anyone have an idea or do you think the disc could be faulty? |

After all the negative hype - I mean, this was like the opposite of Iron Man - I was prepared to dislike The Happening, maybe even hate it. However, the bad hype probably helped me out, because I found it very watchable. Sure, it won't be a favorite, and repeat viewings, well, there won't be many...but seriously, this was worse than Lady in the Water? No way, I couldn't even get through that one, so The Happening didn't seem all that bad as I had feared. Therefore my answer to the OP is at least rent (as opposed to ignore).

I rented it yesterday and watched it last night and I actually enjoyed it. I haven't liked any of his films since Unbreakable so I was prepared to not like this one as well, but after it was over, I wasn't dissapointed. I thought the characters had a nice ark (especially if you watch the first deleted scene on the bonus features) and the story made enough sense to me. Look, since the Sixth Sense, Shyamalan's films have had a problem ending, and Lady in the Water was just all around bad, but I really think this was a much better effort from him.

I just prefer films with a plot and this one didn't have one at all. Call me crazy I guess.

Rented it last night. Not as bad as I was led to beleive but not as good as some of his previous films. I'd rank it above "Lady in the Water" but below "The Village". If I were to rate M. Nights films in order of preference it would go something like this:
1. Signs 2.Unbreakable 3. The Sixth Sense 4. The Village (enjoyed it while there was still the possibilty that it was a monster movie. The reveal was lost on me) 5. The Happening 6. Lady in the Water As a side note, seeing as this is a blu-ray forum, I have to say that I was VERY underwhelmed by the PQ of "The Happening". Flat, (very)noisy and a little too bright. Most of the time my girlfriend and I were hard-pressed to note any diffrence between the blu and an upconverted SD DVD. |

But do you remember the part where
[Show spoiler] This movie made me question whether or not I should even like Unbreakable. It made me realize that he may have never been a good writer/film maker. If he does anything else, I will have a very hard time deciding if I should even give it a chance. |

Not sure how he does it but all his films so far have had well known actors/actresses. Bruce has been in two of them.
Problem with Shymalan is he had a couple of good flicks and now everyone thinks he is "great". He isn't and that's what he forgets. LITW sucked. I don't care what anyone says. Unbreakable was halfway bearable. Had it on dvd, not sure why. Watched it once and have no desire to ever see it again. The Signs, The Village and The Sixth Sense are the only decent films he has. The happening is good, but below all those and above the two crap ones. |

This film is styled after the minimalist plot and special fx of scfi films of the 50s and 60s. When filmmakers couldn't afford special fx, they had to rely on pure, interesting human drama. This film recaptures that spirit.
People say the Day the Earth Stood still remake will be terrible because it is nothing like the original - it will be Hollywood special fx action. Yet, so many people blast the happening for not having the formulaic elements of Hollywood apocalypse films. In terms of execution, this is quite comparable to the minimal nature of TDTESS or Night of the Living Dead. I liked it and I bought it. It is worth noting that I found the film's lesser moments much less distracting the second time. |
