does any1 know what the hell was with the guy in the dog suit at the end? It completely baffled me as a child, much as it does today. I mean there was no mention of guys wearing dog suits let alone any ****ing dogs. I dont even think where were any weird "Furry People" back then that would be turned on by such a thing.

I've seen it once and that was once too often. Shelly Duvall whines and plays the victim for 2 hours. Then you've got the annoying kid. And even if this is the first movie where Jack Nicholson plays the crazy guy, in the 3 decades since that being the ONLY character he plays has been done to death.

And then there's the whole build-up with Scatman Crothers' character leading to nothing (in a big departure from the book which I hadn't read before seeing the movie).

In the end, it's a Stanley Kubrick movie, and NOT a Stephen King story. King's novel is a simple horror/ghost story, this movie tries to play between a horror flick and a psychological thriller. If you like Kubrick movies, I'm sure you'll enjoy it. If you'd rather have a taser used on your genitals than watch a Kubrick film (I'm in this category), then definitely avoid it.

Just got this last week with my bogo order. I have been filling my Kubrick blu-ray collection, and the only one left I don't have on blu is "Eyes Wide Shut". Not sure if I will buy that anytime soon. Have The Shining on DVD, so I am anxious to see it in hi-def.

Hey Warner... WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO RELEASE "BARRY LYNDON"?

The film itself is quite good IMHO, but if you're looking for the King story you'll be dissapointed. Many elements of it are there, but overall they could easily classify as two totally different stories.

Those who were brought up on gore-porn like Hostel and the Saw series will definitely be bored by it. I hate to say it's 'thinking man's horror', because I don't want to make it sound like more than it is...but it's definitely more subtle than most of the horror you find today. More buildup to the 'scare' and due to today's standards the 'scare' isn't quite as scary as when it was initially filmed.

Still, because it's referenced so much in pop-culture it's a must see film like Deliverance or Apocolypse Now.

It probably has been 20+ years since I read the book but it lost me, they movie was just so much better.

King has probably had more movies made of his books and just so many are really bad. But Kubrick's Shining was one of the better ones, though his serious stories tend to translate pretty well like Stand by Me, Shawshanke Redemption, etc

The Shining Blu-ray

The Shining Blu-ray Review

Hey

Does anyone own the Shining on blu ray.

If so could someone advise what the picture and sound quality is like.

I recently picked up 2001 , full metal jacket and a clockwork orange and was very impressed with the picture and sound and now looking at the shining.

I own the recently re released version of it on dvd and looking at the blu ray now.

going through a stanley kubrick faze i guess.

look forward to your replies

cheers

The Shining is easily one of the best looking films in the Kubrick blu-ray collection. One thing though, unless you have an affinity for the under-2hr version, be sure to get the full length American cut of the film.

The Blu ray is the full length cut - it is the only cut available on Blu ray.

For all the rave PQ reviews this Blu ray does have some scenes with PQ issues. Most notably a scene with mother and son in the kitchen at their home at the beginning of the film.

Awesome restoration. The picture is spectacular. The sound is still mostly mono but is clean and clear. If you like the movie, it's a no-brainer buy. When you get it, check out the mountains on the driive to the hotel at the beginning and Jack's jacket during his interview.

THE SHINING and 2001 were 2 of the first blu-rays I ever purchased
and I was so impressed with them that I couldn't wait to buy more movies in this awesome format.

Many movies since then are not nearly as impressive as these transfers...
they are both reference quality on how older movies can look stunning
on blu-ray...
