i see jaes been busy. i also noticed your new pictures featuring your new baby girl.

congratulations on the new sub.

personally, id try to test em out a tad more, and recalibrate them to play nice. heck save up some more money, and end up flanking your set with another one. im sure the wife wont notice.

your not driving are you?

well my movie finally arrived... war of the worlds.. the entire scene leading up to the unearthing of the aliens very impressive... from the low pulse while he walks to the hole in the street.. to the rumbling earthquake madness that comes after..

someone mentioned somewhere that the laser strikes on the ppl was supposed to be low bass.. well im unsure of that.. if it was i didnt sense it...

had my system playing 5db below reference (75db) ... and my sub is level matched so it isnt running hot... well maybe just a tad..

also HORTON HEARS A WHO... pretty impressive aswell.. im sure anything with an elephant in it will have massive bass..

btw i just did a test..
without any chuffing//distortion.. port noise.. i measured 97db at 3ft and at listening position i measured about 90db 6ft away
i still had more i could give it.. but i was already running the poor sub HOT.. with it at 7db above reference.. with sub level set at 0db... normal is -7db

this is the song i played..

congratulations on buying both movies. ive highly considered master and commander as my prime suggestion for a movie to watch, may it be towards the lower frequencies, or the surrounds. its a shame you ended up just skimming through it tho, but then again, we all dont really have options at times.

ok,,this post is not to brag but more of a mystery

outof all the movies played on my system,, I have yet to hear any port noise of chuffing,, popping... nothing

I have played WOW at reference (75dB) and nothing but low rumbling bass

I do believe if any movie would do it,, it would be the dark knight (dvd,,dont have the bluray yet ) this thing is extremely loud...

im either a lucky SOB or im playing my sub really low...

You really should pick up The Dark Knight Blu-ray for its reference TrueHD audio. It is definitely demo material.

just to clarify jae, what do you mean by reference? are you using an spl meter to get that 75db reading, or whats on your receiver?

reason being, is that others can believe they are running it at reference, and use the receivers readings as the 'appropriate volume' for it.

simply put, using a spl meter would correctly inform you of your current volume. thus considered the benchmark so others can tell what 'reference' level means.

But, if you've used an SPL to set up the system and have it properly dialed in, wouldn't the relative volume of 0.0 be "reference"/75db? Why would you need to pop out the SPL again for this?

everyones reference on the rcvr dial is gonna be different due to size of room,,, obstacles,,, and seating distance (mine is about 6ft from center )

my measurements were done by decimeter... at 75dB,,, reading on the rcvr dial was at -16dB

so when I say reference Im speaking of my measurement of level matching at 75dB.....

the loudest I ever had my system was at -11dB on the rcvr dial when I measured the spl of 16hz being played

THE DARK KNIGHT
if the bluray is any more louder than the dvd then I might have to pass for now.... the dvd is just too loud as it is... I will getit soon,,, might buy it when monsters inc. comes out on bluray

hmm. jae actually sort of answered that for you. considering that each receiver has different volume settings, different 'displays' to show how loud they are playing certain material, then we'd be all confused by the numbers being belted out.

jae basically is doing it right, using his spl meter (i believe) to measure what hes listening to.

i think he means spl meter and not decimeter. im not sure.

When everyone talks about the word "reference" what do you mean? Can you explain this in laymen terms?
