Robert Downey Jr. in Tropic Thunder. That role beats 'Iron Man', 'Chaplin', 'Natural Born Killers', and anything else he's been in. Though I do hope he keeps getting better.

Mark Hamill

Movie-wise it's been all downhill since he played Luke. He's a fine voice actor though. Great Joker.

I think i'd have to go with

Jim Carrey - Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. he's awesome in that movie.
Woody Harrelson - White men Can't Jump! (possibly only because of that hat lol)

Kevin Bacon was fantastic in Frost/Nixon as well. But the most astonishing is Russell Crowe... Yeah he was amazing in Gladiator but he was far better in The Insider as well as in A Beautiful Mind. Personally (although I think his role in Gladiator was very deserving), I feel his win for Gladiator was a pity win because he didn't win for The Insider.

When it comes to Samuel L. Jackson I'd say he's pretty close with his performances in Coach Carter as well as in Die Hard 3. Very different performances though.

EX. Josh Harnett is working towards the same (Hit: Black Hawk Down) <--might be wrong about him, correct me if Im wrong
Ex. The Entire Cast of Blair Witch (all one hit wonders....next: working construction and local plays)
EX. Leonardo Dicaprio is far from a one hit wonder (3 time oscar nominee (Blood Diamond, Aviator, Gilbert Grape)
Josh Hartnett was excellent in Sin City, Lucky Number Slevin, and The Black Dahlia...

Gerard Butler was awesome in Dear Frankie and he was the only reason Tomb Raider: Cradle of Life was somewhat watchable

Robert Duvall and Michael Caine starred with Osment. It was a nice adventure/drama movie. Extremely refreshing actually.

MacCauley Cockin in Home Alone

Derek Luke in Antwone Fisher

Russell Crowe in Gladiator (IMO, his best performance ever, but I do admit that he has done many great films)

Tom Hanks in Cast Away TIED with his performance in Forrest Gump (IMO, his best performances ever, but I do admit that he has done many great films)

Denzel Washington in Malcolm X (IMO, his best performance ever, but I do admit that he has done many great films)

It has already been said that Mel Gibson in Braveheart was his utimate performance to date.... which begs for another opportunity to post this rare shot of Mel preparing for his speech before the final battle scene:
