Default Were they just preparing us for the hd to hit?

I was on youtube and there was a guy who said they were just getting us use to DVD so we would be prepared for the hd dvds when they hit the market. The idea he thinks was getting use to have movies on disc to prepare for blu-ray down the line. If they were planning this the be the main discs to produce does that mean dvd is going to phase out and it is just going to be more and more blu-rays coming in the future?

Yep, ten quick years of preparation, so we'd be all nice, sharp and ready.

There are some that think DVD did open the door for blu-ray but I doubt they were really thinking about 1080p back in 1996.

DVDs were cutting edge consumer tech when they were new. The technology wasn't there for anything more. High def digital was not a practical workflow when 2GB hard drives were considered huge.

Look at how far DVD technology/quality advanced from ~1999 to ~2009 as well.

<Sigh> There is a guy on youtube who films himself bathing, still means absolutely nothing. Credible sources are undeniably credible, and just because some wank has a camera, and an opinion doesn't mean he is a credible source, or his opinions should be considered matter of fact.

Regardless, although his conspiracy theory as to why DVDs hit before Blu-Rays is unfounded, and fairly unsupported in my opinion, DVDs will eventually phase out (in my opinion).

As most (I think) would tend to believe and agree with, DVDs will phase out, just like VHS did, just like cassette tapes did, just like 8 Track tapes did... etc, etc. This however will happen slowly, most likely slower than past convergences, the 'phasing' will most likely occur due to people adopting a new technology (Blu-Ray). We have seen trends this past year that clearly show, more people are adopting blu-ray as their medium of choice, as prices on HDTVs, BD players, etc are all lowering in prices. In addition, BD sales are up fairly significantly from last year. If everyone (or the majority) eventually move to Blu-Ray and they are no longer making money from DVD products, that is the time those will be phased out.

Would that mean that CD's actually were the first step in preparing us for Blu-ray?

Don't know about you, I didn't need much preparation for these fantastic looking Blu's!!

DNinja, since it's youtube there is a chance he got this info by asking a ninja. So there might be some truth to it.

Apparently the mediator who deleted my comment either (a) can't take a joke; or (b) doesn't like the movie Billy Madison.

Mr. Holloway, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent post were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this thread is now dumber for having read it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

I don't think "it's true because the interwebz told me" works in this situation.
