STATUS UPDATES (Friday, April 10)
Chuck Update: Chuck executive producer Chris Fedak tells us exclusively, "Currently we're talking with the studio and the network and everybody's really positive about the show. The network and the studio have been big fans throughout the process through both seasons. We have high hopes. But on the other side of things, we definitely want our fans out there telling their friends and family, as well as blogging and talking about how much they like the show. That's super important." Dollhouse Update: Contrary what you might have heard this week, Dollhouse has not already been canceled. Sources tell us that Fox is "100 percent in the decision phase" regarding a renewal. http://www.eonline.com/uberblog/watc..._fave_see.html |

![]() Way to add to a discussion about television shows. Personally, I like Castle quite a bit. It's a shame I've been so afraid to like it, because shows get cancelled so quickly these days. I think it's well -written and well-acted... it's just in a crappy time slot. |

I wish there was some way that fans could pay to keep their shows available. For example, I would be willing to pay to receive Terminator:SCC. It could be like a record club. You sign up for a subscription and receive one blu-ray (or dvd) every 4 weeks, I would be willing to pay $10 a month for the show. I don't know, on the other hand, if enough other people would go for this scheme to make it feasible. ... and Hollywood would probably want $25 + S&H for each episode. Something similar could also be done with the iTunes store or Playstation Network.

I wonder how that'd change shows. They'd have to try even harder to please us. |

I'm right there with you. It's been ridiculous watching tv over the last 5 years or so. Ever since Alias ended after a good run, almost every new show I watch gets cancelled after no longer than two seasons (most less than that). Dancing With The Stars gets almost 20 million viewers a week, but good shows struggle to even stay on the air. Does that seem logical? I'm done watching any new shows if Chuck gets cancelled as well. Fox cancels Terminator and Dollhouse? I'll keep watching 24 since I like it, but nothing else ever again on Fox. Fox has done enough crap over the years. It sucks when you're thinking more about whether the show will be back after a season finale rather than what could happen in the next season.

This is from the cancel/renew index from somebody who every year computes all the data on ratings and has been pretty accurate so far in his determinations, but don't take any of this as confirmed by the studios just more of a gauge at this point.
Based on NBC’s recent string of failures, you might be surprised that both of NBC’s newest shows, Southland and Parks & Recreation did well enough in their initial airings to warrant renewal. If they can hold reasonably steady, they’ll both be coming back. I’d be surprised to see all four of these shows renewed: Chuck, My Name is Earl, Law & Order, and Medium. But I’d be equally surprised to see all of them canceled. My guess is 3 of the 4 make it, including Law & Order. Four other shows are certain to be canceled: Kings, Life, Knight Rider and Kath & Kim. Starting this week, instead of using the 18-49 viewership for the calculations, I’m going to instead use the 18-49 rating, which simply is the percentage of the US 18-49 TV adults population. (There are an estimated 132 million US adults 18-49 in TV households, so a 1.0 rating is equal to 1.32 million adults 18-49). Since we only get 18-49 demo ratings for each show on an overnight basis, that makes the values in the Renew/Cancel Index easier to compare with the overnight demo ratings results. http://tvbythenumbers.com/2009/04/22...-keepers/17175 |

I generally don't bother to watch anything on the monster channels, and very little else on other channels. There are a few shows here and there on the big channels that impress me enough to make me want to watch them (House, The Office, ect.), but the problem is I can get them so easily somewhere else that there's even less reason to even bother flipping the channel to FOX or NBC.
Lets name the assassins: DVD If you can get the show on DVD or even Blu-ray, why watch it on TV? Other than supporting the great show to make sure they continue to make the show, there's very little incentive. To add to this factor, consider that a show that sells well enough on DVD can sometimes convince studios/execs with the big companies to continue the show a while after they've cancelled it (Family Guy anyone?) and it seems almost pointless to lose sleep over a cancelled show -- if it's good enough, it won't be gone for too long. Age Considering most shows lose their glamour and writers start to get lazy around the 5th or 6th season, there's even less incentive to do anything to support the show after a certain point. Syndication When a show becomes as highly syndicated as The Simpsons (or even House in recent years), that's even less incentive to see the show on the original channel. Digital Downloads/Streaming Video With cheap digital downloads, but even easier to access free, streaming video on sites like Netflix or Hulu or even the site of the company that produces the show, the ease of seeing even new episodes whenever you want to, almost WHEREVER you want to, and HOWEVER you want to with all of these examples in play, this just nails the coffin shut on anyone ever bothering to watch TV and be tethered to the time frames they want us to be tethered to. We live in a world where freedom of choice in entertainment is becoming more and more available everywhere you look -- you don't have to follow the rules anymore. Prime Time is a thing of the past. Now Prime Time can be whenever you want it to be, wherever you want it to be, and however you want it to be. I think the real problem here is the business model of these companies. They rely heavily on advertisement, and that's fine and good, but I think the advertisement companies are still under the assumption that people are going to keep watching TV the way they always have -- when it's clear to me that the way people watch TV is about to DRASTICALLY change, and if they want to make any money, they're going to have to take that into consideration, and just follow the quality wherever it goes. Basically, I'm not afraid of any great shows being lost, because even if they are there's every chance if they're good enough that they'll be back in production soon enough. To be honest, I haven't been impressed with much since the 90's when it comes to sitcoms and dramas and whatnot -- the age of GOOD sitcoms is pretty much dead...I haven't seen a really good one for over ten years, and I really don't count shows like The Office among sitcoms, because I'm talking in general more about the specific formula for sitcoms that had been around for at least two decades prior to the millennium. Shows like the Office follow their own different and specific formula, and as such are original enough to blaze their own path. In terms of classic sitcoms, I don't think it's impossible to make a good new one that follows the classic formula, I just think that writers of these shows have been bombing left and right. The chemistry between actors has also been horribly wrong. As for Drama, I have to count myself among the minority in saying that CSI and all it's iterations were simply not all that entertaining to me. Why would I bother with shows like that when A&E and Discovery had shows on PRIOR to CSI that showed the actual reality behind that type of Drama? How exactly is it entertaining to see someone whose idea of dramatic acting is talking and walking around like the frickin Fonz on acid? That's about as good as Hayden Christiansen's idea of dramatic acting being "slur my words like I'm drunk". Oh yes, VERY dramatic, Hayden. I'm so tense I'm literally on the edge of my seat.....and leaning towards the bathroom in the event of a more than possible need to toss my cookies. BUT I DIGRESS! I just realized how big of a tangent I just went off on.....my bad! ^_^; I guess the point I'm really trying to make is that the virtual landscape of television as we once knew it is rapidly changing in a variety of ways, and neither the television companies nor the advertisers involved have yet to catch on or catch up to that fact. As a result, it's more than likely that a few good shows will fall by the wayside... HOWEVER...just make sure to support it as much as you can, even just by buying the DVDs, and if enough people love it that much, there's every chance even a canceled show can make a comeback. Don't worry about this stuff, there's not much to be truly concerned over, and so long as you're doing your part to support the show, you're doing all you can in a day and age in which the changes of television are becoming more and more apparent with each passing day. |

From this List
I watch: Castle Castle is my new favoite show I hope it stays around for awhile. I hated ABC for cancelling Eli Stone but I have been giving them another chance with Castle. When I saw Nathan Fillion was going to be in it I had to watch, he even plays kinda the same arrogant character he played on Firefly. I really love the show. If ABC cancels this show too I will definitely stop watching their network altogether. Dollhouse I love Dollhouse, it is getting better and better every week, I hope they give it a chance. Without a Trace I still watch Without a Trace but its about time for it to end, it has been on a long time. Shows I've tried: Terminator: SCC I watched the first 3 or 4 episodes because it looked like it could be good but I quickly lost interest, there are too many other better shows I watch. Chuck I watched 3 or 4 episodes and lost interest. Cold Case I watch it sometimes if there is nothing else to watch but I don't really care if it gets cancelled. Others: I don't care about any of the others, I haven't even heard of some of them. It is definitely stupid that they dont count DVRs for ratings, I don't know many people who watch live anymore. They shouldn't cancel anything until after they see the DVD/Blu Ray sales numbers because alot of people wait for stuff to come out on DVD so they can watch it all at once and not have to wait a week for the next episode. I know several people for example, that will buy Dollhouse when it comes out on DVD but they don't watch it live. Last edited by brewp13; 04-24-2009 at 01:16 AM. |
