Don't believe that for one minute. Warner Brothers and Legendary don't own the rights to Godzilla, Toho does and the final film in their agreement with Toho ends with Godzilla vs Kong. Whether Toho agrees to renew is up to Toho. Oh, and Toho is already working on a new Toho-produced Godzilla film. For those who were waiting for a sequel to Shin Godzilla, it's not coming. Toho has already verified that they will continue where Final Wars left off.

How do you figure? That's like saying that Lucasfilm has no right making Star Wars movies (oops, wrong example, they actually don't know what they're doing)

Godzilla has always evolved, from one film to the next.

Not true. Toho's plans for a new series in 2021 do not preclude Legendary from continuing their US series. They may not license again once Legendary's rights expire, but it's standard for most deals, from Bond to Bourne to Fantastic Four, to include a proviso that the studio involved can renew the rights whether the owner wants or not as long as they keep on making sequels within a certain timeframe (hence Universal making their Jeremy Renner Bourne film to keep their rights). From Variety's report of Toho's US expansion:

https://variety.com/2019/film/asia/j...od-1203192294/

Quote:
Japanese-language websites have reported that Legendary Entertainment’s license to use the Godzilla IP will soon expire. But Legendary retains the rights as long as it continues to make Godzilla films.
Toho is an investor in Legendary’s “Godzilla: King of Monsters,”

In other words, as long as Legendary deems it profitable, they can keep on making Godzilla films as long as they want as long as they don't leave it too long. All that changes is their window of exclusivity.

If Legendary's monsterverse ends it'll purely be because it'll finally sink in that they can't keep throwing high nine figure budgets on money losing kaiju flicks like KOTM, Pacific Rim and The Great Wall. If they can find a way of making them cheaper or broadening their appeal the most Toho can do is ensure their series and Legendary's don't open the same years, as they did with Shin Godzilla

If Godzilla vs Kong flops then that's all she wrote for the Monsterverse.

Yeah, the least believable thing in the series! Nuclear radiation creating Godzilla, fine, works, but the design of a giant ape named Kong? All wrong! Entire series is faulty!

GKOTM was not a flop. It underperformed but despite all the flak it received, the box-office was decent. X-Men Dark Phoenix was a flop.

You have no idea what you are talking about.

X-Man: Dark Phoenix $252,442,974

That was a flop.

I loved the movie but it lost money. It cost almost 200mil and made less than 400mil. Movies like this need to gross roughly 3 times their budget to be condidered profitable.

Not at these budgets. They spent over $20m more making it and it grossed over $135m less than the 2014 film, on which Legendary's profit for putting up 75% was just $39.3m after marketing, distribution costs and Warners' cut (https://deadline.com/2015/03/godzill...14-1201389604/). It didn't even make it to $387m WW.

Legendary need to massively rein in their budgets if they want to stay in the kaiju business.
