Over the past week or so, I've watched the John Cassavetes set. I really can't recommend it enough.
I personally believe that this set is one of the best releases that Criterion has ever put out. John Cassavetes was a tremendous and unique talent who created films about life, similar to the French New Wave of the past. Cassavetes gave birth to the independent film and his subsequent films popularized the genre even further. All five films in the set are perfect or near perfect, in my opinion, but my favorite has to be The Killing of a Chinese Bookie, followed closely by Faces. I strongly recommend this release for you folks for the Barnes 'N Noble sale. ![]() |

I just read the first two chapters of “Blazing Guns on the Chisholm Trail” by Borden Chase, and I'm quite liking it. It looks to be a quick read, so I'm going to take it with me to read while I'm at the service station waiting for my truck tomorrow morning.
I wanted to read this novella before watching Red River. I'm looking forward to delving into both versions of the movie this weekend, though. It's just a question of which one to watch first. |

For all those that are Costco members, there is an article about the 'new' relationship between Costco and Criterion. It's in their Costco Connection magazine and on the link below:
http://www.costcoconnection.com/connection/201406#pg65 They have some nice stock as of today, but looks like they may be another outlet to grab a few titles from in the future. They usually sell all titles at $19.99, so its a pretty nice deal. Plus for all you case OCD members, you can find one that is mint enough for you... ![]() |

The nearest Costco is about a 45-minute drive from where I am, which isn't too bad, but it's in Massachusetts, so I'd have to pay sales tax. The nearest one in NH is about an hour away. |

I just finished watching Shane (1953) for the first time, because I'm compelled to check out some classic westerns in my still-unwatched Blu-ray stack before I delve into Red River this weekend. All of the acclaim that I've read about in context to this movie is definitely warranted, and it's a beautiful film across the board, with the Grand Teton scenery serving almost as a character in its own right.
I prefer the Criterion title, 3:10 to Yuma, to Shane by a slim margin, but I admire Van Heflin's acting range in both films. |

There's a Costco right up the street from me. It's actually in walking distance from the Barnes & Noble where I buy most of my Criterions. I'd be interested to see what all titles they have in the store, because I have not yet bothered to seek out a membership.

I often kick around the idea of moving to a less-crowded area that better suits my love of the outdoors, but I'd miss the convenience of living near all of these shops. I miss Borders Bookstore, which used to be located two miles away as well, because that was where I bought a lot of my Criterion DVDs many years ago. Barnes & Noble does me right when it comes to Criterions, though. |
