Pause
Forward
Reverse
Time Info (so you know where you are at)
Chapter Number

Yes, you can't even PAUSE the disc, or 'rewind' back if you missed a piece of dialogue. What a joke. And going into disc info on the player, no chapter numbers are listed, no time, and the front panel display for my Oppo just says 'Main Menu' for the entire playback of the movie.

The only thing besides Play and Stop that you can do is advance the chapter back and forth.

So, so lazy.

As far as the video transfer goes, it looks alright. Definitely HD looking, though compression looks iffy and credits smear really bad. I don't think it was worth the price I paid from Code Red direct. The lack of Pause , FF/RW, and a time counter is inexcusable.
Which Oppo do you have?

Will check my own later today.

The issue with VOICES FROM BEYOND is if you hit "Pop-up Menu" - instead of it going to a menu (because none exists) it'll instead re-play the movie, and then all controls (save chapter skipping) are locked out. Not the end of the world, but annoying the first time I played it on an actual player versus just playing the raw files on a PC (which is what I usually do).

Checked both VFB and JBD on my code free Oppo BDP-93.

On JBD I can fast forward, reverse, pause, skip chapter etc. and have a counter.

On VFB I can pause, skip chapter, and I have a counter, but for some reason I cannot fast forward or reverse.

On both discs there's no option to restart at the same point if you stop the disc. But I have been told this is due to the authoring software used, and Scream Factory appears to have the same problem/ lack of feature with (some of?) their discs.

I just checked VFB and all functions work fine on my LG player. Pause, fast forward, rewind, chapter skips all work. There is also a time counter for me. Hitting the disc menu button restarts the film as there is no menu and the movie just plays after the Code Red logo when you pop the disc in.

To confirm: Voices From Beyond allows you to RW/FF/PAUSE after you've hit "Top Menu" on an LG? 'Cause that's not how my up-to-date PS3 reacted to the disc at all.

I guess VFB is more "buggy" than "broken", then? Whatever. At least it looks and sounds pretty good... wish I could say the movie itself was anything but dreck, but heck, I knew what I was signing up for.

As for the idea that Code Red is over-charging, keep in mind that the MSRP on Scorpions releases are all about $27 MSRP (which means Scorpion is actually getting somewhere in the ballpark of $12~15 wholesale, I'm sure). With all due respect to Walter, I think he'd be a fool to charge much less than $20 per title, even going direct. The costs just to produce a BD are high enough that there's a reason each and every one of these labels carefully selects which titles are going to get the HD treatment.

Just Before Dawn was a bit of a stretch on the price for me (particularly with it being single-layered, grumble grumble...), but they did two completely separate film transfers, which isn't cheap - not even for the fairly minimalist approach they took on the "International" cut.

i ordered just before dawn. ive never seen it but everything I have heard about it makes it sound like a near classic. plus I wanted to support code red putting out blu rays. yeah $31 is kind of pricey but if this leads to movies like evilspeak and popcorn (didn't someone mention code red potentially having the rights to popcorn?) then it would be well worth it. glad to see code red finally making the leap to blu. I wasn't to sure about voices from beyond as every single later fulci movie Ive seen has been complete garbage.

does anyone know how long code reds shipping usually takes? do they use tracking numbers?

I need to stop spending money on blu rays this month! I have a ton of good stuff on the way. demons 1 and 2, horrorshow, assault on prescient 13, crystal lake memories and night of the scarecrow. hopefully some of these pacakges arrive while my wife is at work otherwise you all might be reading about me in the newpaper, I can see the headline now "woman takes the life of her husband for spending too much money on blu rays".

well if they accept paypal they pretty much have to bc you could just dispute any order on paypal and win without a tracking number. just because they have one doesn't mean they give it to me though.

do they send the tracking number in a email?

Got both of these yesterday.

Got halfway through Just Before Dawn. Bit rate during night scenes dropped as low as 6 Mb at points, but I didn't visually notice any problems.

Only point I had problems was the opening sunrise, which had terrible something between the different sections of light coming off the sun. Like when it got darker, between the shades, there was were blotches and squares, like a bad movie file on YouTube or something. Think it might have been compression.

Anyway, very happy with the blu ray otherwise, and the movie is beautiful and eerie.

Might watch Voices From Beyond tonight after I finish this.

Yeah, I noticed that too. It seems that opening title sequences are often in rough shape, but it cleans up directly after, so no biggie...

I'm fairly used to seeing that on 80's and 70's horror films now due to the opticals of the credit text being put over already damaged film, or due to the double grain layer.

But yeah, the rest of the movie in my opinion looks really good. Nothing special or amazing, but for what it is, it looks very good.

Evilspeak might be coming from Severin.

Bill's posts can be slightly confusing.

No you have to ask. But Bill ships quickly so there is really no concern...

thats great news. I really like evilspeak and will buy it day one. I know code red just did a new dvd but why one earth wouldn't they put out the blu as well? if anything was close to a sure fire thing for the types of movies code red puts out I would think it would be evilspeak.

who knows, maybe the dvd isn't selling well and he thinks a blu ray isn't worth it.
