JP3 had some good ideas, but starting production without a finished script never works well. You could tell they were rushed to finish things off, and the attempts at humor were cringe worthy. It's not a bad movie by any means but I'd still rank it the weakest in the franchise.

3 is automatically better than World as it has Sam Neill.

And 3 doesn't have Chris Pratt, so it also has that going for it.

As long as we can agree The Lost World is the best sequel.

And again the awful trendy word reboot is thrown around : Jurassic Park III is a sequel and nothing else.

I've always thought it was easy enough:

Sequel - A continuation.

Remake - A retelling of a story already told in the medium.

Reboot - A film that serves as a fresh new start, ignoring previous installments while also telling a new story. Batman Begins for example is a reboot.

But there's so much confusion, with sequels and remakes being called "reboots", so I'm not sure if the term even has a meaning of its own anymore.

I think he'd just assume the kid was dead and tell them not to get their hopes up, and that attempting to find his remains would be a suicide mission. He didn't seem convinced Eric was still alive until he met him in the flesh.

And I wouldn't blame him for it. Being lost in a jungle by yourself is dangerous enough without the addition of carnivorous prehistoric reptiles running around all over the place; some of them the size of a bus, some of them extremely aggressive and among the most intelligent animals to have existed (as Grant knew and had experienced firsthand). Any rational person would assume a 14-year-old kid would be dead after two months in that environment.

I never thought I'd live to see JPIII being called "fresh". The plot is but a rehash of the previous movie - people looking for someone in the jungle while being chased by dinosaurs.

This. Indeed. The defenitions are so simple, yet everyone is calling everything a reboot these days. Even the most respected movie-related sites are mixing it up constantly. And I can't stand it. There's little of these futile things that bother me, but this one drives me crazy.

And in The Lost World the main focus is on the Tyrannosaurs, tracking the humans across half the island to protect their baby, which in the climactic San Diego sequence turns into the male T. rex chasing them to get the baby back.

In JPIII it's the raptors chasing them around to get their eggs back.

The theme of parenting is also reflected in the human characters in both films, with Ian's relationship with his daughter in TLW, and the Kirbys looking for their son in JPIII.

Never understood how the third film supposedly brings anything new to the series at all.

Well, Alan Grant always had a thing for the Raptors, thanks to his paleontology digs. Years of research combined with frustrations and lack of funding, leading to sleepless nights does rear its ugly head inside a jet plane. And then coupled with the horrifying experiences in the Visitor's Centre of Nublar; inches away from being clawed to death (saved by Deux ex-Tyrannosauria) makes that dream very plausible, nightmarish even.

I tell you an incident that took place couple of years ago. My family was out of town for a week. I was alone at home. Watched a few horror movies on Telly - The Grudge, The Ring, and some sequels. Some time later, on one night, I had extreme difficulty trying to sleep (I was still all alone). I had this choking/freezing sensation.

Paranoia gripped me very fast. I could almost see a lady wearing a white robe, with face obscured by long hair standing at the corner of the room. I could not turn sideways on the bed for I was certain there was someone lying there (there was nobody). I couldn't keep my feet at the edge of the bed afraid some infernal hands may grab my ankles and pull me under the bed and finish me off.

If a few films do that to me, think of what years of experience and being almost killed by actual dinosaurs would do to someone's mind. Also, he had no one to love him or put him back to bed if he woke up from a nightmare at home. He was obsessed with dinosaurs. That obsession had its cost.

Plus, it often happens that when you are dreaming, external factors like light, sounds, voice coming from another source/person will influence and become a part of the dream. However implausible it may be, it would look and feel real to the dreamer. This is called REM sleep, if I am not totally mistaken. This has happened to me quite a few times.
Alan Grant's nightmare was nothing unique or comic.

In October of 2001, when I saw the film in the theatres, that moment scared the shit out of my 14 year-old self.

The third film was far more simple, relatable, enjoyable than JP2, which started off great, then started drifting away-became a generic chase movie.

Also, there were two big plot holes at the end of JP2 that were very jarring. How did the S.S. Venture crew die? How was the Captain's body torn from his wrists? Surely it couldn't have been the T-Rex, which was still sedated and too big to enter the cabin or leave behind a wrist, latched onto the wheel?

Second, what happened to Nick Van Owen (Vince Vaughn)? How come he just disappear after being instrumental in sabotaging InGen's Sorna compound and saving all the dinosaurs? He returned with Malcolm and party, yet, there was no sign of him. And Malcolm, in the midst of an earth-shattering event about to take place in San Diego, tired and scarred for life as he is, still finds time for a shave. It can thus be assumed that Nick Van Owen was the one who tried to shave off Malcolm's beard in the helicopter, but mistakenly cut his skin a bit. Malcolm, his daughter and his girlfriend got furious and threw him off the chopper in the sea. See?

JP3 was the first film to show the Raptors' intelligence as well their maternal instincts. All the Raptors did in JP1 and 2 were hunting and killing. The only reason the Raptors chased the group across the island was because of their eggs. In fact, the scent from the eggs are likely what attracted the Spinosaur's attention; why it kept going after them, especially when they traveled down the river, which was its territory, since it was a swimmer. JP3 raptors are the best-looking in the series ti0-date and have the proper bird-like pupils and quills on their heads, like birds.

Also, Billy's dangerous yet desperation-fueled act of snatching the eggs was a far more interesting subplot than anything in The Lost World: JP. In fact, there was no significant subplot in JP2. It had so many characters and so many stars that no one was identifiable as a solid lead character until the San Diego sequence. Even then, Malcolm just followed Sarah's orders, despite the fact that Spielberg initially set-up Malcolm to be the lead.

In contrast, Grant always remains the lead in JP3; he was always part of the central action, the plot and the subplot as well. Ellie's role was very significant as well, despite being short.
The filmmakers would do better to bring Neill and Dern back for Jurassic World 3. Even in a cameo, such as a joint Paleontological TED talk.
