Which is tricky to do when you want to make these huge blockbuster movies and compete with all the other mega budget releases. I mean realistically it's hard to get them made for much cheaper.

That said the reported budget for Mortal Engines was about 100mil and that movie looks AMAZING and huge in scale, with stunning VFX.

Wikipedia says $100-150 million so I’m guessing more on the higher-end. But that movie also lacked an A-list cast.

Godzilla KOTM had an A-List cast?

It didn't even make it to $387m WW.

Legendary need to massively rein in their budgets if they want to stay in the kaiju business.

Agreed gents, slash the budget and we end up with a bore fest like the 2014 film, with poorer CGI.

And yet Toho made Shin Godzilla for around $15m while the FX heavy Ender's Game came in for $110-115m even with Harrison Ford.

They could make it with a 15 million budget...if they used monster suits and miniatures. I would see that if the whole movie just focused on the monsters, no human characters. Heck give it subtitles to translate the monster's language and make it like a Kung Fu/Western/Samurai movie with Godzilla as a reluctant hero joined by Mothra, Rodan, Anguirus, King Caesar, Jet Jaguar, and Baragon vs every other monster in the franchise.

Or alternately, Legendary - who put up 75% of the cash - should go on spending $320m+ on making and marketing films that only return them and Warner Bros $160m net at the box-office (since it doesn't qualify as a Chinese co-production despite Legendary's Chinese ownership, they only kept 25% of the $135m Chinese Gross).

Kaiju films have always needed to be made economically to be viable. And as my other example, Ender's Game, showed, you don't need to spend $180m on an effects heavy picture.

But the CG in Ender's Game is really poor. Looks more like a computer game.

American audiences wouldn't accept a boring film like Shin Godzilla.

Honestly, I'm not going to go crazy speculating what plot points a toy might have.

In fact, the less plot this movie has, the better lol

That's just you guessing. People just add marketing but don't add in any tax breaks, or merchandise sales. There's a lot that goes into movie production and profits, but this forum tends to just take the box office, add a random marketing number and that's that just to say a movie isn't profitable. (I'm not trying to call you out, it's just something I'm noticing more and it bugs the hell out of me lol)

Kong is not a Gorilla. He's a Titan, an ancient superspecies whose lifespan and physiology is greatly enhanced by radiation from deep within the Earth.

[Show spoiler]Possibly a containment device, something Monarch comes up with to supress his power.

Or MG is disguised as Godzilla at some point, and this is an intermediary look.

Or getting really out there, maybe Mechagodzilla is based on nanotech, and the big G is infected / being assimilated.

Actually the numbers are all there, plain to see. Under no reasonable logic was this movie a success. They greenlit both this movie and KONG V GODZILLA under a certain set of expectations and KOTM didn't live up to them by any metric.

The movie barely cleared $100 mil in the US. That performance is absolutely dismal. It was basically HALF the domestic gross of the 2014 film -- and inflation would make that discrepancy even worse. That dropoff was especially significant because the studio takes more of a cut here than they do with foreign where local distributors bite into the gross. If it couldn't hit $200 mil domestic it was a failure right then and there, given what the 2014 film produced and what they spent on this. Instead it made $110 mil? Come on man, that's a HORRIBLE number for any "major tentpole franchise".

As for merch sales, the toys sat on the shelves at every Walmart I went to all year and were on clearance for $5 a few weeks ago. Sure that's just my personal experience, but I doubt they really moved a lot of that product.

Bottom line is there is no way KONG V GODZILLA would even be produced based on KOTM's numbers. We're basically getting a "bonus movie" out of the deal because KOTM was pretty much a flop given its budget.

Regarding box office: It's worth noting once again that studio blockbusters need to make about triple their budget to become profitable. The reported budget doesn't include marketing, which can be just as big as the production budget. And movie theaters keep about 50% of ticket sales.

My point is no one can know how successful or not a movie is unless you work for that company. That's all. And a company pays Legendary/WB to license the toys. For example lets just say NECA. If the NECA toy doesn't sell, then they don't make the money. Legendary already made the money from them. besides box office, and estimates for the budget, what numbers are "out there to see"

EDIT It's not just about this movie, but almost every thread has some sort of box office expert saying that a movie was successful or not, or how a movie is because it out grossed a different movie, etc. All I want to do is talk about a giant lizard fighting a giant monkey without people saying how opinions are dumb because half the movies gross went to AMC, but dont worry about potential tax credits, or other factors that can actually help a movie

One of Godzilla's biggest feats is his ability to move merch. Kaiju fandom isn't as big as Marvel or Nintendo or something, be we are invested. We love buying this stuff!

The Walmart toys' initial wave sold out quickly, was replenished, then sold and was replenished again w/ some slight updates. It's on clearance now, but it had a good run, and Playmates' new Godzilla / Kong figures have taken its place, and also appear to be selling. How this is all split up between the manufacturer, retailer, WB, Legendary, and Toho is anybody's guess.

This is true. I really hope GvK makes bank, because otherwise, the MonsterVerse is done.

No but Godzilla doesn't have to (in all fairness they were trying to make Millie Bobby Brown look like the star), the name Godzilla can sell a movie right there and then. Mortal Engines is completely different, it doesn't have the same marquee title as Godzilla.
