The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning: 1/2

I really enjoy this installment. Especially over the 2003 remake. It's intense, it's bloody and quite gory and it has characters that you kind of, sort of care about (which is nice to have in a horror movie). Not to mention that R. Lee Ermey is just fantastic as usual.

Oh, the horror so far this year:

The Brides of Dracula 1/2

There is reason to doubt the quality of a movie with Dracula in the title that has no Dracula, or his brides for that matter. Those doubts are completely smashed here though, because this is an excellent installment in Hammer Horror. Peter Cushing remains my favorite take on Dr. Van Helsing, who here starts to show shades of James Bond when the action starts! Beautiful sets, stellar acting, and a blend of drama, romance, horror, action, and even a hint of comedy make this a fun and exciting watch.

At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul 1/2

Coffin Joe is one evil guy, constantly intimidating, blaspheming, and worse to the horror of the other villagers. It's interesting how there's nothing supernatural about the character of Coffin Joe, but the entire film is incredibly haunting. Even the gore, tame by today's standards, is shocking with how the film portrays it. It reminded me of silent horror like The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari in how it feels so alien, yet intimate. And that finale is something else, using basic effects to compose a pulse pounding closing to an unsettling tale. This one is begging for Criterion or Arrow to give it a blu-ray.

The Blob (1988) - First time seeing the '80's version, it's fantastic. Great practical effects, gore, production, homages and call backs to the original, etc. Wish the Blu wasn't so expensive / hard to come by.

Drag Me To Hell - I haven't seen this since it came out in 2009 (I can't believe it's been so long already). Some of the CGI and sound effects are distracting, but it's still a pretty fun and solid return to horror by Sam Raimi.

Friday the 13th part V: A New Beginning (viewed with the highly entertaining audio commentary) - zero skulls. Many people hate this entry because "the real Jason isn't in it". Personally, I hate it because it's terrible. The acting is either wooden or over the top. The prerequisite sex and nudity are sleazy and unpleasant. The gore and makeup effects are pedestrian. The story is stupid. And, let's not forget my "favorite" scene, where a group of people are driving from Point A to Point B, they aren't being followed, they don't suspect a killer is on the loose, yet the music score is frenzied and tense. This truly is one of the worst studio movies ever made. The commentary track, however, is a must.

Not bad for a late sequel in this series... provides some pretty creepy moments via imagery and direction. The story veers into familiar territory as it gets late into the plot and the ending seems almost abrupt. Overall though one of the better entry's in the Amityville saga

The Tingler (1959) Another nice little thriller from William Castle featuring the great Vincent Price. Here, Price plays a doctor who has made a surprising discovery -- the spine-chilling sensation that people get when scared is due to a parasite that he dubs the "tingler." It’s a bit hokey, but it has a great charm to it. I’m a little disappointed that blu-ray dips in quality during the color sequence.

Friday the 13th: Part V: A New Beginning (1985) “Come on Roy, get your hands dirty.” So despite
[Show spoiler]this sequel not featuring Jason,
it’s still a damn great and worthy entry to the franchise. The film has a more mean spirited feel to it while still retaining all the qualities that made the previous films so great. The kills might not be so creative this time around, with the exception of the tourniquet one, but they're passable.

Dead Alive (1992) Man o’ man is this movie completely fxcking bonkers! The film is a perfect mixture of slapstick, splatter-horror, and comedy. By far one of the goriest zombie flicks ever.

31 Days Of Halloween!!!

10/7: He's Out There [First Time Viewing] -
I have a big crush on Yvonne Strahovski. So I had to give this one a watch. Good idea but sadly not done well. Felt a bit too generic. If done right it could have been a pretty interesting horror flick.

Previously Watched Films:

[Show spoiler]
10/1: Hereditary [First Time Viewing] -
I believe in everyone has a right to their own opinions, but I really don't get the hype for this movie. Had some good moments but overall I thought it was pretty meh, felt most the acting was bad(especially the son) and I had to fight to stay awake.
10/2: Mandy [First Time Viewing] -
What a ride this film was. Very trippy, visually stunning, and Cage played crazy/wild Cage. My favorite kind of Cage.
10/3: Summer Of 84 [First Time Viewing] -
Really dug the vibe and music of this one. Not something that has a lot of replayability but still worth checking out.
10/4: Child's Play -
10/5: Return Of The Living Dead (1985) -
10/6: Fright Night 3D (2011) -
There's only a few remakes that I like, this is one of them. Yes I love the original, yes it is a classic. But I love this one as well, and it's so great in 3D. Colin Farrell plays the part perfectly, the way he is aware of the surroundings at all times. Top notch. Usually add this to my October movies every year.

[Show spoiler]10/1
1) The Thing (1982)
2) The Bar (2017) .5
Keeping with the paranoia theme. This is a fairly entertaining look at how people might act if in a horrible situation. Mostly good performances from the cast and pretty well made, if not for a few stumbles.

10/2
3) Upgrade (2018)
Although the setup is completely obvious, the performances, fight scenes and world created made up for any lack of obscurity. Though this doesn't have much in the way of horror it does contain the old "misuse of technology" theme.

I'm so jealous of those that get to watch multiple movies a day. If I wasn't in the process of a move I'd have no problem shrugging off responsibilities to enjoy a good ol' double or even triple feature.

10/4
The Blood on Satan's Claw (1971) .5
Hammer'esq in style but lacking cohesion. After watching I read this was intended to be an anthology but changed it up somewhere along the way. Costumes, acting and such were done well enough but it definitely lacked that Hammer charm.

10/5
Terror in the Crypt (aka Crypt of the Vampire, also aka La cripta e l'incubo) (1964) .5
This movie had a lot of potential, it just never really hit it's mark.

10/6
The Monster Club (1981)
Later anthology collaboration of Vincent Price and John Carradine with some "super hip" '80's monster rock. Their wrap around story was amusing and sometimes hilarious due to the musical acts. For me, the first story was by far the best.

Since it's almost midnight, I'd better start tonight's selection. I haven't quite narrowed it down. But I'm pretty sure It'll be a Hammer classic...

still digging through the more obscure stuff.

the mutilator - 2/5
I'd really only say seek this out if you're a slasher fanatic. it's kinda fun. it's not great, but it's not the worst of the early/mid 80s slashers.

see no evil 2 - 1.75/5
well, the first one I absolutely hated. so it is an improvement. but it feels so formulaic. is that the point? maybe that's why I've been pretty over slashers for a while now. I've always liked danielle harris, and am bummed she didn't have a more successful career. I mean, I've never watched a movie with her and ever thought she did bad. but it's nice to see her in a lead role.

nightmare city - 4.25/5
italian horror seems to be my jam. it might be my favorite subgenre. I think it always has such great energy. this movie is indicative of the type of movie I want to find when I dig deep. now, this is not a perfect movie, but it's fun. as I say with almost italian horror or giallo, I love the score to this. you could make a fun double feature with this and wild beasts.

10. The Mummy's Tomb

Thirty years after Steve Banning and Babe Jansen broke into Princess Ananka's tomb and unleashed the mummy Kharis, the mummy returns to life, traveling to America with Mehemet Bey to go after the Banning crew and kill them off, one by one.

At only 60 minutes, with the first 10 minutes or so being a recap of The Mummy's Hand, The Mummy's Tomb moves at a rapid pace and wastes no time bringing Kharis back to life. This was my first time viewing this movie, and after seeing Hammer's version of The Mummy, I can see where Hammer got their inspiration, as it pulled most of its story elements from this version of The Mummy.

1. House on Haunted Hill
2. The Gorgon
3. The Mummy (1959)
4. The Brides of Dracula
5. The Curse of the Werewolf

Burial Ground: Night of Terror (1981, 85 minutes) ✰✰✰✰✰✰ The lack of plot and strange low budget effects give it a dream like quality and those zombies are a gnarly mix of gross and low budget with extra points for creative use of maggots; the zombie masks are a.unique mix of obviously fake but scary and gross in spite of their shoddy production. I admire that BG doesn't waste time with plot and has a mix of gothic and zombies. Sometimes too cheesy for it's own good. Format: Blu-ray [Shriek Show].
War of the Dead (2011, 86 minutes) ˝✰✰✰ Smaller scale world war 2 zombie mystery hooked me in, it balances scope well by not tacking more than a small squad of characters and goes for the gusto on set design. It may be I have a weakness of occult nazi stories and zombies but this feels like the action horror movie I didn't know I was looking for despite it's weaknesses. Moody filled with burning cavernous underground bunkers but often obscured by shaking cameras; there's a fight scene where it's literally raining paper the whole time and those details are engaging. There's a lot of popgun bullet spraying as the heroes action pose, to a fault, and some of the shots feel engineered with unintentional pastiche. Format: Digital [Vudu HD]. 1st Viewing
Peelers (2016, 95 minutes) ✰✰✰✰✰✰✰ Amateurish is to be expected with a title like this, adds little new to zombie horror. It's hard to criticize a film like this that mostly feels like the victim of poor budget and indie aspirations but ultimately I didn't end up enjoying it much and there are other better movies that cover the same thing. Some of the effects approach being good but so much of it feels cliche. Format: Digital [Vudu HD]. 1st Viewing
Scooby Doo: Camp Scare (2014, 78 minutes) ˝✰✰✰✰✰ It's hard to criticize Scooby but this one has so much going on it's hard to keep track, three monsters and a over the top technology camp detract from what could have been a cool romp in the woods - sometimes less is more. Format: Digital [Vudu HD].
The Dead Next Door (1989, 84 minutes) ˝✰✰✰ Scenes filled with zombies or other sight gags give this an epic scope and it's nicely paced. The effects are better than you'd expect. Despite being 'hd' the image still has a soft quality due to film source. Overall this one's a winner and goes into some of the physics of zombie outbreak without feeling like it's over explaining. Some of the religion vs science themes we've seen before but there's such as constant stream of action and the zombie squad is a really cool idea that it all works. Format: Digital [Vudu "HD"]. 1st Viewing
Zombeavers (2014, 78 minutes) ✰✰✰✰ What seems like the stupidest 'college humor' premise surprises me - it's not high brow but it's not overly obnoxious and reasonably dives into sleazy low hanging fruit of sexualized characters and zombie critters. It's brisk enough and gets right into set-up without worrying about over establishing characters and dialogue is written in a more natural way where characters are more interested in cracking jokes than dramatizing. Format: Digital [Vudu HD].
Last Girl Standing (2015, 91 minutes) ✰✰✰✰✰✰✰ Clever idea of following a horror slasher survivor after the ordeal, here it's handled with less flair such as the most routine villain. It jumps into the mundane without executing a strong hook, trusting it's own premise perhaps too much without supporting it as well with necessary setup or solid acting. Doesn't seem to have as much fun with the plot and the actors sort of sleepwalk through it. The dialogue is sometimes painfully over polite (i.e. 'gee I'm sorry I over reacted,' then 'oh it's ok, don't worry about it' erupting in way more apologizes on screen than kills or even jokes – it's like a new apology subgenre lacking whit or fun where everyone it painfully sympathetic or unrealistically rude). It's much less 'meta' and self-aware than it probably should have been wallowing in overly serious fluff – no shocks, no frights for too much of it's runtime. They could have improved to film to make it's last chapters a short film. Format: Digital [Vudu HD]. 1st Viewing
Dr Cyclops [Svengoolie Episode] (1940 [Dr Cyclops] / 2014 [Svengoolie episode], 95 minutes) ✰✰✰✰✰✰ Albert Dekker has an unique physique that combined with the spectacles looks imposing, not unlike a cyclops of greek legend (bulkier with obviously limited vision). I think his combination of scientific reserve and maniacal 'makes' the film more than the effects. The Svengoolie material corresponding with this, it was my first exposure to the horror host and was fun - Sevengoolie's a corny fellow but energetic. Format: Digital [thanks to Alyxstarr]. 1st Viewing
The Mind's Eye (2015, 88 minutes) ✰✰✰✰ Steeped in stagelight color and synth score this throwback film is like the spaghetti western of telekinetic horror, it hardly re-invents anything but very effectively riffs on stuff we've seen in The Fury or Scanners with some gnarly effects. Format: Digital [Vudu HD]. 1st Viewing
The Sitter (2017, 97 minutes) ˝✰✰ Psychosexual without being lurid this moody film is slow paced but well shot and abstract, I could see it not being for everyone but I liked it a lot more than I expected. It's a slow burn that's at times too slow and psychological, which I found to be wonderful and even when things shift pace it's a well executed mystery with twists and over the top terrors. The trailer is misleading. Format: Digital [Vudu HD]. 1st Viewing
The House With a Clock in the Wall (2018, 105 minutes) ˝✰✰✰✰ It's hard to be critical of all ages films like this but the type that goes all in on magic to the level of near constant fantasy takes some of the thrill out of it in my opinion. It basically starts as a comedy and never really recovers a level of tension despite some twists running off sight gags for so much of it's time. Overall me and the kids enjoyed it and it's refreshing for their to be family friendly season offerings. I'm not a big fan of Jack Black, he's masterful sometimes but often seems to play the same basic character and struggles with dramatic chops. The rise of a darker adversary makes things more interesting but editing could have been tighter.. Format: Theatrical. 1st Viewing
Son of Dracula (2017, 97 minutes) ✰✰✰✰✰ I've never been a big fan of Dracula stories (vampires are neat but the painstaking re-tellings of Bram Stoker's story get stale imo). It is interesting to me how Dracula is more of a real estate mogul in these than a fiend of the night and that one of his threats is to family property. Apparently this is the first time he is seen transforming to a bat on screen. Son of Dracula does an efficient job of keeping the same tone as earlier Dracula offerings but not being redundant. Format: Digital [Vudu HD]. 1st Viewing
Split (2016, 117 minutes) ✰✰✰✰✰✰✰ James McAvoy performs well in a premise that seemed cringeworthy to me, the multiple personality stuff is no less over the top than I had feared. There is some grit and it's an ambitious premise but using real world trauma and make believe veiled as mental health as plot premises is dis-tasteful. Format: Digital [Vudu 4K]. 1st Viewing
Shivers (1975, 88 minutes) ✰✰✰✰ Grisly premise that's far out and themes of civilization going savage make for an interesting theme. Dated now and perhaps not as impactful since biological horrors to the extreme of this have become more popular. Format: Digital [Vudu HD]. 1st Viewing

-Twice-Told Tales * (1963):

Tepid triptych of terror tales -- adapted from the stories of Nathaniel Hawthorne -- all feature Vincent Price (who also narrates in his trademark dulcet tones). In “Dr. Heidegger’s Experiment”, Price portrays an elderly doctor with an even-more-decrepit friend (Sebastian Cabot) who both discover a literal fountain of youth in the crypt of Cabot’s wife (Mari Blanchard), whose corpse has been miraculously preserved by the water dripping upon her coffin for the last 38 years. In “Rappaccini’s Daughter”, Price portrays a man so determined to keep his daughter (Joyce Taylor) away from the evils of young, courting suitors that he mixes her blood with the blooms of a virulently poisonous plant growing in his walled-off garden, where he keeps both well-tended. In “House Of The Seven Gables”, Price plays a man returning to his childhood home after a 17-year absence tempted by a treasure rumored to be hidden somewhere on the grounds, only to fall under the sway of a curse that has plagued the male members of his family for over 150 years. A fairly routine anthology feature that fails to match the classy chills of the Roger Corman/Edgar Allan Poe adaptations of the period featuring Price, with logy pacing (the three stories take a combined two hours to fully play out) and obvious payoffs.
