10/7/18 ![]() The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning: ![]() ![]() ![]() I really enjoy this installment. Especially over the 2003 remake. It's intense, it's bloody and quite gory and it has characters that you kind of, sort of care about (which is nice to have in a horror movie). Not to mention that R. Lee Ermey is just fantastic as usual. Oh, the horror so far this year: [Show spoiler]

The Brides of Dracula
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() There is reason to doubt the quality of a movie with Dracula in the title that has no Dracula, or his brides for that matter. Those doubts are completely smashed here though, because this is an excellent installment in Hammer Horror. Peter Cushing remains my favorite take on Dr. Van Helsing, who here starts to show shades of James Bond when the action starts! Beautiful sets, stellar acting, and a blend of drama, romance, horror, action, and even a hint of comedy make this a fun and exciting watch. At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Coffin Joe is one evil guy, constantly intimidating, blaspheming, and worse to the horror of the other villagers. It's interesting how there's nothing supernatural about the character of Coffin Joe, but the entire film is incredibly haunting. Even the gore, tame by today's standards, is shocking with how the film portrays it. It reminded me of silent horror like The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari in how it feels so alien, yet intimate. And that finale is something else, using basic effects to compose a pulse pounding closing to an unsettling tale. This one is begging for Criterion or Arrow to give it a blu-ray. |

The Blob (1988) - First time seeing the '80's version, it's fantastic. Great practical effects, gore, production, homages and call backs to the original, etc. Wish the Blu wasn't so expensive / hard to come by. ![]() Drag Me To Hell - I haven't seen this since it came out in 2009 (I can't believe it's been so long already). Some of the CGI and sound effects are distracting, but it's still a pretty fun and solid return to horror by Sam Raimi. ![]() |

Friday the 13th part V: A New Beginning (viewed with the highly entertaining audio commentary) - zero skulls. Many people hate this entry because "the real Jason isn't in it". Personally, I hate it because it's terrible. The acting is either wooden or over the top. The prerequisite sex and nudity are sleazy and unpleasant. The gore and makeup effects are pedestrian. The story is stupid. And, let's not forget my "favorite" scene, where a group of people are driving from Point A to Point B, they aren't being followed, they don't suspect a killer is on the loose, yet the music score is frenzied and tense. This truly is one of the worst studio movies ever made. The commentary track, however, is a must.

![]() ![]() #12 ![]() ![]() ![]() Not bad for a late sequel in this series... provides some pretty creepy moments via imagery and direction. The story veers into familiar territory as it gets late into the plot and the ending seems almost abrupt. Overall though one of the better entry's in the Amityville saga |

![]() ![]() ![]() The Tingler (1959) ![]() ![]() ![]() Friday the 13th: Part V: A New Beginning (1985) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() [Show spoiler] it’s still a damn great and worthy entry to the franchise. The film has a more mean spirited feel to it while still retaining all the qualities that made the previous films so great. The kills might not be so creative this time around, with the exception of the tourniquet one, but they're passable. ![]() [Show spoiler] I'm so jealous of those that get to watch multiple movies a day. If I wasn't in the process of a move I'd have no problem shrugging off responsibilities to enjoy a good ol' double or even triple feature. 10/4 The Blood on Satan's Claw (1971) ![]() ![]() Hammer'esq in style but lacking cohesion. After watching I read this was intended to be an anthology but changed it up somewhere along the way. Costumes, acting and such were done well enough but it definitely lacked that Hammer charm. 10/5 Terror in the Crypt (aka Crypt of the Vampire, also aka La cripta e l'incubo) (1964) ![]() ![]() This movie had a lot of potential, it just never really hit it's mark. 10/6 The Monster Club (1981) ![]() ![]() ![]() Later anthology collaboration of Vincent Price and John Carradine with some "super hip" '80's monster rock. Their wrap around story was amusing and sometimes hilarious due to the musical acts. For me, the first story was by far the best. Since it's almost midnight, I'd better start tonight's selection. I haven't quite narrowed it down. But I'm pretty sure It'll be a Hammer classic... |

still digging through the more obscure stuff.
the mutilator - 2/5 I'd really only say seek this out if you're a slasher fanatic. it's kinda fun. it's not great, but it's not the worst of the early/mid 80s slashers. see no evil 2 - 1.75/5 well, the first one I absolutely hated. so it is an improvement. but it feels so formulaic. is that the point? maybe that's why I've been pretty over slashers for a while now. I've always liked danielle harris, and am bummed she didn't have a more successful career. I mean, I've never watched a movie with her and ever thought she did bad. but it's nice to see her in a lead role. nightmare city - 4.25/5 italian horror seems to be my jam. it might be my favorite subgenre. I think it always has such great energy. this movie is indicative of the type of movie I want to find when I dig deep. now, this is not a perfect movie, but it's fun. as I say with almost italian horror or giallo, I love the score to this. you could make a fun double feature with this and wild beasts. |

![]() ![]() 10. The Mummy's Tomb ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Thirty years after Steve Banning and Babe Jansen broke into Princess Ananka's tomb and unleashed the mummy Kharis, the mummy returns to life, traveling to America with Mehemet Bey to go after the Banning crew and kill them off, one by one. At only 60 minutes, with the first 10 minutes or so being a recap of The Mummy's Hand, The Mummy's Tomb moves at a rapid pace and wastes no time bringing Kharis back to life. This was my first time viewing this movie, and after seeing Hammer's version of The Mummy, I can see where Hammer got their inspiration, as it pulled most of its story elements from this version of The Mummy. 1. First-time viewings marked with an *
[Show spoiler] 10/08/18: -Twice-Told Tales * (1963): ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Tepid triptych of terror tales -- adapted from the stories of Nathaniel Hawthorne -- all feature Vincent Price (who also narrates in his trademark dulcet tones). In “Dr. Heidegger’s Experiment”, Price portrays an elderly doctor with an even-more-decrepit friend (Sebastian Cabot) who both discover a literal fountain of youth in the crypt of Cabot’s wife (Mari Blanchard), whose corpse has been miraculously preserved by the water dripping upon her coffin for the last 38 years. In “Rappaccini’s Daughter”, Price portrays a man so determined to keep his daughter (Joyce Taylor) away from the evils of young, courting suitors that he mixes her blood with the blooms of a virulently poisonous plant growing in his walled-off garden, where he keeps both well-tended. In “House Of The Seven Gables”, Price plays a man returning to his childhood home after a 17-year absence tempted by a treasure rumored to be hidden somewhere on the grounds, only to fall under the sway of a curse that has plagued the male members of his family for over 150 years. A fairly routine anthology feature that fails to match the classy chills of the Roger Corman/Edgar Allan Poe adaptations of the period featuring Price, with logy pacing (the three stories take a combined two hours to fully play out) and obvious payoffs.
