People encountering Xenos for the first time, slashing and stabbing them with knives and somehow magically avoiding all contact with the acid blood is some TV bs. Its either for plot armor or avoiding the cost of special effects, but it pissed me off when the moment finally happened and "whoops, let me take my vest off". Hick's corpse says hi

Sorry if someone made the same post before, but something has bugged me since the beginning.

Boy Kavalier

It sounds like they couldn't name find a name for the character so they just used his personality traits.

Kojima style.

"So what should the rich tech guy be named?"
"Well he is young, arrogant and dismissive"
"Boyish, with a cavalier attitude"
"Great let's use that but with a K so people won't notice"

Watched the third episode.

The two synths/kids meeting Morrow inside the Maginot wreck and later being interrogated by Kavalier's assistent - their dialogue is terrible. It sounds exactly like watching characters in AvP or The Predator talking. Yikes.

Why did we suddenly get a long electric guitar music track reminiscent of the Lethal Weapon films?

The redhead is just wandering around with her big expressive eyes, looking bewildered all the time. That's all she does. The camera loves her face, but there's just no character there.

Also, did I hear Morrow right in his call to Yutani - The Maginot has been away on its mission for 65 years? Maybe this was mentioned earlier in the series and I missed it, but I don't understand how that works. The crew of the Maginot was wearing Weyland-Yutani insignia and marking on their uniforms, the ship and so on. But Weyland-Yutani didn't exist when they left Earth 65 years prior; Weyland and Yutani were separate conglomerates then. So how can they be wearing Weyland-Yutani uniforms? This is perfectly illustrated in Prometheus where Weyland is its own corporate entity.

To me, from how Scott worded it and what happens in the actual film, it seemed like he was talking about that specific xenomorph being "made" by David, not necessarily that David completely "created" the xenomorphs from scratch in general. The mural from Prometheus which is still canon disproves the latter being the case. For reference, Scott said:

Going off the films and taking Scott's quote directly, they took a "different direction" with Covenant meaning no Engineers (except for a flashback), but that does not undo what we saw earlier in Prometheus or that the black goo is a mutagen which gives organisms xeno properties and precedes David.

Again, David made that particular xeno in Covenant as Scott says. But he is not the Creator of them as a whole. Either the Engineers made them, or they came from somewhere else, and the Engineers used these creatures to make the mutagen.

That is how I have always interpreted that quote from Scott.
This is what Prometheus shows us, and David's actions do not really change that.
Ridley has a habit of just saying things in commentary or at press junkets and treating them as scripture.

Example:

ALIEN: Covenant

When they capture the xeno in the crane, while trying to take off from the planet, they crush it and kill it. Ridley, on the commentary, says (paraphrasing) the bits and pieces of the alien will regenerate and the alien will be alive again. Because you can’t kill the alien.

Alright Ridley…your head cannon doesn’t make it official cannon

Real answer: The producer doesn't care about the prequel timeline.

Fan answer: Maybe the ship got a refit after the merger.

I was already wondering about this in episode 1. The text overlays at the beginning of the episode say that the Maginot is a Weyland-Yutani ship, that it is the year 2120, and "mission length: 65 years". This doesn't fit with the chronology of Prometheus, which is set in the 2090s and still has Weyland as a separate corporation. I guess Prometheus isn't considered canonical for this show.

I have no interest in alternate universes. While Disney continues to release upcoming films that take place in the previous Earth-48721 etc. There are no time traveling elements in this franchise like comic books or The Terminator series have.
De-canonizing what others have set before you because you think you could do better or just dont like it is selfish and lazy. Much like the eye rolling opening of this series with the heavy fan service to the original.
A good writer can work around what they are given. Its crazy you guys just want the aesthetic of the original repeated over and over again. How creatively deafening.
I would say I hope this tanks but since its television, I dont think it matters. Disney will most likely continue to milk it for what it can.
But if they were trying to make a scary Alien project, they already failed in that department with the presentation of how the Alien looks with its dry rubbery fake looking costume. It comes off this intimidating

Yeah, I don't mind either. This isn't something that affects the story in any way. There were always minor inconsistencies in the Alien franchise anyway.

It would have been a non-issue, if Hawley had simply decided that the Maginot deep space 65 year long journey, was a Yutani Corporation mission.

This series could have been a great opportunity to dive into that mostly unexplored part of ALIEN lore, unexplored in any of the feature films of the franchise to date. We know enough about Weyland by now, but almost nothing about the Yutani side of the equation.

But that would require actually thinking about what you're copying from the 1979 film, why you are copying it, how it serves the story you are trying to tell - and if there's a better way to accomplish that, instead of just rehashing what Ridley did.

There's still hope though, since Yutani appears in person in this series. I hope they don't waste it.

What other inconsistencies besides James Cameron being a control freak and changing Weylan to Weyland probably because he thought it sounded better, as well as shooting 1:85.
Although if this TV series wanted to be clever, they would have gone with "Weylan" as well.

Even Shane Black honored tradition for an 11 year old movie that tanked...critically.
From a reddit thread discussing the series:

Although I will say this, if your "Alien" feature has multiple Aliens in frame, then call it Aliens: (Title here). Singular attack but another Alien later shows up, then Alien as a title will be accepted. So Alien: Romulus and Alien: Resurrection got it wrong, although Resurrection got so many things right. Unsettling and managed to be funny at times, with great action scenes. And has hand down one of the best chest burster sequences in all the series, just badass.

I'm a metalhead, but I don't want Metallica in the end credits, as it just doesn't fit.
The ONLY time that I saw this work really well was - Ash vs Evil Dead - on STARZ.

Of course that series has a whole different mood to it than this one.

And what difference would that have made to the handful of people who even remember little details like that?

Some people say it's too similar, some say it's too different. I guess they found the right middle ground.

I see it more as homages rather than copying. This episode even had a little Blade Runner homage.

Well, since we were talking about Prometheus, how about the silly retconning of the space jockey (who was clearly a kind of biomechanical creature in Alien) as a space suit? Or the changes in the reproduction cycle over the years? Or how about the fact that between Prometheus and Alien humanity somehow forgot how to make flatscreen monitors?

I dont consider comic book/novelizations canon.
