That's the color of this movie, so that's what "neutral" is IMHO.

Also, grainy? Yeah, film has grain. I'm not sure what "ants" you're talking about, as it looks like natural-ish grain to me. With you adjusting sharpness and such so readily, perhaps your display needs a calibration reset, including the disabling of any auto/"smart" settings, to get it showing that grain properly? Maybe a filmmaker mode or something? (not a dig, just wondering) Regardless, like my above color argument, removing, lessening, or otherwise changing that grain from the look of the film the movie was captured on would be wrong. It should be "grainy."

Aside from the compression issues that others have mentioned (and the lack of original audio), since the corrected disks, this is a nice presentation of Rocky.
Relating specifically to the blacks look at Rocky's leather jacket in Rocky V vs the original Rocky. Rocky V has it the right colour but all the blacks in Rocky have this green tinge as I said, it's been that way since the DVD remaster even in things line the dock scenes. It's just not neutralised so the black is too green rather than a slight reddish black like in Rocky V.

Yes. That's what has been said: the street lights cast a green tint, and that's the original color as-captured for Rocky, which you also continue to acknowledge. Comparing to a different movie, with different everything, will only give you a "yup, they're different," and is not relevant to how Rocky looks.

Yeah I wouldn't be quite so diplomatic re: someone's settings. **** knows what everyone's using, like that guy who insisted his set was 'calibrated' only to reveal he was running black four points darker because that's how he liked it

Fair. That did make me laugh when that -4 preference nugget came out. Most who claim X is bad, or Y has too much Z, are not running anything close to a calibrated, transparent setup, whether by ignorance or choice. Anecdotally, it seems mostly the latter; dat pop is a helluva drug it seems...

Dem's fighting words there, boy.

Lol j/k. I'm very biased cuz this flick has always been my favorite movie of all time, regardless of cheese. It came out the year after I was born and I honestly couldn't say when the first time I watched it was. The Rocky franchise was always there for me. What I can say is that over the years, I found myself revisiting it way more often than the rest.

Now here comes this new version with all this new footage that actually rights a lot of the wrongs that fans have mentioned over the years. There's a lot of things I like about this edit, but it's still rough around the edges (particularly the talk Rocky and Apollo have early on about change. Sly should've left that scene basically alone, but putting in the music from one of the earlier films was a nice touch).

I know I've harped on this topic before in other threads, but after the DC was released, I saw lots of edits people posted on youtube that were made as a way to find a "best of both worlds" edit, usually of the fight scenes. It wasn't long until I started seeing full fledged edits of the entire film. *I think* the 3rd or 4th one I saw was the one that was closest to how I would've edited an "ultimate cut" for myself (which I had planned on doing, and do intend to finish someday). They got it 75-80% "right" (for my sensibilities anyway), so they've done 3/4 of the work for me.

The robot is staying in, lol. As a kid, Rocky 4 was in my unwritten mental list of movies with talking robots in it (Short Circuit 1&2, Space Camp, Flight of the Navigator, etc...)

I think Warner finally sent my replacement discs out. I just had to send whv a fresh email instead of replying to the old ones with my address and phone number. They sent it within two business days.

Wow, the manufacturing quality of this set is just awful.

Whether connected or not to the gel-like gunk all over these discs, Rocky III and IV both froze on me around 5-10 mins into the movie. Only for a second but a freeze is a freeze.

Is there any sign of a UK edition of this set with, hopefully, decent discs?

With the even more shocking quality of the new Mad Max set, it's "the dumpster" for WB right now...

A few observations, really dislike the greeny blacks on Rocky. I know it's the remaster but they looked that way on the dvd I thought by now the would have neuralised the blacks for 4k to make less green looking.
His leather jacket looks silly greeny black most of the time.

Man these films are grainy, aside from the new Rocky IV cut, that I really like. It's much better in my view despite the silly aspect ratio. I watched the Theatrical afterwards and by god it's cringy in comparison, so definitely sticking with the new cut. So back to the grain, I had to lower the sharpness slightly and a few other bits on the TV to not make it crawl with ants on Rocky 1-3.

Rocky V and both cuts of Rocky Balboa to go.
The original cut of Rocky IV is a 90 minute music video.

The new version is mostly not an improvement. The movie feels like a mix of what it was and half an attempt to be more serious. It seems choppy lacking in an identity now. It's largely not a movie built on substance. The director's cut only marginally changes that. My opinion of course.

The packaging is so awful - with ultra tight slips for the discs - that every single one of mine was scratched. It looks gorgeous but is wholly impractical. It went straight back.

I just recently picked up the Ultimate set and finally gave the first movie a spin. I haven't seen the film since the old Special Edition DVD from the early 00's. I thought the film looked great. The dirty grimey look throughout the film until the finale with all the bright colors on display really drives home the greatness from small beginnings vibe. I didn't notice any compression artifacts but my screen is relatively small (~55") and I'm not the keenest eye for that stuff, but it did seem a bit soft if I'm being honest. I watched with the 5.1 remix and thought it sounded alright too. I checked the mono as well but I could not discern any real difference like different effects. I've read that the piano cue was added back into the finale so is it possible this is a new remix wholesale or just that little bit? There's also a scene when the camera cuts to a new angle and the dialogue goes a little wonky for a sec. It's in Rocky's apartment when Mickey is talking to him. It happens in both the Mono and 5.1 so I'm not sure what to think here. Overall though it was a pleasure to watch such a great film and the 4K is IMO the best way to view the film.

Finally received the replacement discs! I emailed them on the first day the replacement program was mentioned here.

What helped get it going was emailing the UK, and they forwarded it the US. Weird, I know!

They came in those white paper sleeves. All of the discs were in good condition except R1 has about 3 scratches! Do they do replacements for the replacements?!
