Lisa Frankenstein (2024) (First-Time Viewing) - (3.75/5) - This was a fun watch. Excellent style, and visuals, with a heavy emphasis on neon colors. Some of its production design seemed to be channeling Tim Burton. The "creature" was also very reminiscent of Edward Scissorhands. I enjoyed the film's lighter tone, and morbid sense of humor that glosses over some of its more macabre traits. I appreciated the film's winks, and nods to past horror films too. I thought this was a fairly strong debut feature-film for director Zelda Williams (daughter of Robin Williams), which I think will gain a larger following in the future.

I loved the film's animated opening credits, and the way it transitioned into live-action for its title. This is an ungraded version though, it's a lot more colorful in the movie.

Can't go wrong with this film, highly recommended for the kids:

No, but seriously...

Here's some random ideas off the top of my head
(However, I'm completely unaware of what's available or not on streaming so keep that in mind.):
  1. It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (1966)
  2. Mad Monster Party? (1967)
  3. Hocus Pocus (1993)
  4. The Halloween Tree (1993)
  5. The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
  6. Casper (1995)
  7. Scooby-Doo On Zombie Island (1998)
  8. Scooby-Doo! And The Witch’s Ghost (1999)
  9. Monster Mash (2000)
  10. Scooby-Doo And The Alien Invaders (2000)
  11. Scooby-Doo And The Cyber Chase (2001)
  12. Monster House (2006)
  13. ParaNorman (2012)
Or you can always show them the classic monster/horror films from the 1930s, 40s, & 50s because those films are pretty "safe" for kids nowadays:
  1. Frankenstein (1931)
  2. The Wolf Man (1941)
  3. The War Of The Worlds (1953)
  4. Creature From The Black Lagoon (1954)
    (Among countless others.)
Or if you prefer something closer to "normal" horror films (for adults):
  1. Poltergeist (1982)
  2. Critters (1986)
  3. The Monster Squad (1987)
  4. Beetlejuice (1988)
  5. Tremors (1990)
I'm sure I'll think of more as the day goes on...

Audition

I think this is some of Miike's best work here. It works as a horror film but it can be viewed on a broader scale as well.
From the start it slowly gets you more uncomfortable every minute it moves by. At first you don't really know why you feel that way but it starts to make more and more sense every passing minute, climaxing in a very vividly terrorising scene.

I do feel some of the
[Show spoiler]info dump leading up to the climax does sort of hold your hand a bit too much and the film might have been even more effective with less but in the end I think it has more to say than blood and gore and for the full picture you have to have these moments in some form.

Very good.

Default Röckzilla's Röcktober Fest™ 2024 - Day #13

October 13th - It May Not Be Friday, But It's Still The 13th Damn It!:

Film #25. Friday The 13th Part 2 (1981)

Okay, fine, I'll officially admit it: Jason Voorhees isn't receiving his fair share of screen time (or is that scream time?) at my house this Halloween season but I swear, it's technically not my fault. Besides there being no actual Friday the 13th during October this year, Fridays have already been reserved for "Forty Years Of Freddy" celebrations anyway. So I'm sorry Jason, sincerely I am, but Freddy earned a fair priority for Röckzilla's Röcktober Fest™ 2024. *Sigh* Now that's out of the way , I'll try to fit some Friday The 13th films into the viewing schedule to make amends with Crystal Lake's most famous mongoloid. With so many films to choose from, I'm planning on a "greatest hits" approach by only selecting my top ranking personal favorites from the franchise. Oddly enough, it appears that I favor the first few even numbered sequels (2, 4, & 6) a little bit more so I'll begin with Friday The 13th Part 2 (1981).

Points Of Interest include: Directed by horror regular Steve Miner, a severed human head in a refrigerator, an icepick to the temple, a butt shot (which showcases a butt... shot ), a scary campfire story detailing Jason Voorhees, crazy Ralph gets garroted, typical camp counselor hijinks, the back of a hammer to the back of a head, a (literally) "last chance" night in town (booze and local bar band included), the seriously intellectual and eloquently worded theory that Jason may just be "a frightened retard" , some late night solo skinny-dipping, upside down throat slitting, a machete to the face (followed by falling down a flight of stairs), perfume for a gal's private parts, a sex scene interrupted by shish kabob-style impalement (talk about your "double penetration", am I right folks...? I thank you... ), a pre-hockey mask wearing Jason Voorhees (this time sporting a stylish burlap sack... hey, he looks like Digestor from the band Ghoul! ), plenty of pickaxe and pitchfork action, a puddle of human piss, a macabre shrine/altar, Amy Steel doing her best Betsy Palmer impersonation, and as a special added bonus: perhaps one of the greatest (horror) taglines ever conceived ("The body count continues...").

Röckzilla's Final Verdict: An essential and entertaining example of early 80s summer camp slasher films. Possibly my personal favorite Friday The 13th film... then again, it's still too difficult for me to decide on just one.

Film #26. Friday The 13th The Final Chapter (1984)

Does anyone out there even read ALL of this crap? I mean seriously, aren't the "Points Of Interest", "Skulls", and "Music" sections really what the people are waiting for here? In honor of Jason, a maniac of very little words, let's attack this write-up for Friday The 13th The Final Chapter (1984) in true slasher fashion and just cut to the damn chase already... "KI... Ki... ki... MA... Ma... ma..."

Points Of Interest include: Bloody special makeup effects by the legendary Tom Savini, a peculiar workout video, nightshift neck snapping, a new drinking game: "take a shot every time a character says 'dead-f*ck'", a husky hitchhiking hippie, graphic banana squeezing, child actor extraordinaire Corey Feldman, Gordon the golden retriever, a very excited Corey spying on a gal undressing across the street, gratuitous use of 80s short shorts (including on men), "Twins, Basil, twins..." (hopefully someone gets that reference), some spontaneous daytime group skinny-dipping, Corey's bedroom full of monster masks and other cool horror stuff, Crispin Glover's absolutely jaw-dropping dance moves (to a cheesy song by the band Lion ), a nude female impaled on an inflatable raft at night (but not in the good way), a penis punctured by a speargun, uncovering a hidden collection of very vintage erotic films, a corkscrew to a hand and a meat cleaver to a face "a.k.a. kitchen carnage", an ass pressed up against the shower glass, an axe to the chest, multiple characters frequently crashing through windows and glass, hand-splitting machete action, Corey's bold new hairstyle, slowly sliding down a machete's blade face-first, and an ending that will leave you repeating out loud: "Die, die, die…!"

Röckzilla's Final Verdict: A solid slasher series sequel with plenty of Jason Voorhees action. Another contender for my personal favorite Friday The 13th film.

Aaugh! How am I suppose to choose between Frightmare and F.K.Ü.?!
I mean, they were both technically on Razorback Records back in the day and that's not making the decision process any easier for me either.
Guess I'll just have to include both... :

I don't like Carradine as Dracula that much. Legosi just has a better look for it. Was nice to see Boris Karloff back though, and this time as a crazy scientist. And Chaney jr as always is great as the Wolfman

I enjoy the originals the most. Some of these are still decent but yes they are a thing of their time.

I watched the originals last year and I believe 2022 and think I've given those all 7 and 8s.
