It's DNA memory from the days when we were all paranoid of Disney during the birth of DVD (Disney and Lucas were considered the two DiVX "traitors", like the Paramount and Universal of their day), and even after they'd started doing the respectable Gold Editions, removing Pecos Bill's cigarette in '01 was E-VILLL!

Or just look over on the Tron thread, where Steve Lisberger mentions "tweaking" the near-thirty-year-old master, and twenty posts all panicked "They're going to reanimate scenes and do a George Lucas on it!

The thing I don't like is Disney's recent trend towards not including the original soundtrack. Dumbo had a terrible multichannel mix and no alternative. I hope Fantasia is better.

For a moment, it almost sounded like you were hoping Fantasia would come to Blu with an original mono soundtrack as an alternative to a modern multi-channel mix...

There's nothing bizarre or strange about wanting an uncensored version of a film available on home video.

Everyone is free to handle this release however they see fit.

The whining from the get-over-it crowd about the no-censorship whiners shares all the attributes of that which they whine about.

Yes, I suppose I just whined about the whole thing.

I was able to watch a bit of Fantasia and Fantasia 2000 (received the UK version). I skipped to "Night on Bald Mountain" since it's by far my favorite segment, and I was very impressed. It looks fantastic, and the commentary is informative as well. I'm still in awe of some of the animation in that piece. "The Sorceror's Apprentice" looks great as well.

Is there truth to the rumor that it's such a short run that they're discontinuing it and putting in the vault in January already??

If so, maybe I should buy two and hold on to one...

It was originally multichannel Fantasound.

While there was a mono mix for non-Fantasound theaters it wasn't what Disney intended you to hear, just as P&S versions of widescreen films are necessary evils of the marketplace (and often signed off on by the filmmakers): they aren't what the director or cinematographer intended you to see.

Germany has separate releases.

In the U.K. you can get Fantasia by itself (labeled "Special Edition", or bundled with Fantasia 2000 (labeled "2 Movie Collection").

In early 2010, Platinum Editions were announced for both "Fantasia" and "Fantasia 2000" (likewise, Diamond Editions were announced for the U.S.A.). Those plans never materialized. There is a current listing for a Platinum Edition of Fantasia and Fantasia 2000 still listed on some sites, including Amazon.co.uk for release in 2011. But they do not seem to be real titles.

Disney may come out and announce Platinum Versions for release in 2011, but currently there is no word on any version other than the current special edition.

Its long shot, but got I hope they do. To not even have a 'Making of...' featurette for this classic film is just dreadful.

I was just at Costco looking for Turbotax & noticed a few boxes of this set under the counter. Boxes were sealed & stated not to sell until 11/30/10. I didn't open the box & try to buy but it's nice to know they are out there already.

I'm waiting to use the $10 coupon next week.

Because the Blu set presents the Road Show version of Fantasia, which was originally released in multichannel Fantasound. I don't think the Road Show version was ever shown in mono, anywhere. After the initial Road Show bookings, RKO cut Fantasia considerably and they released this highly-compromised version on a double bill with a western. THAT release was in mono. Story goes that Walt Disney was so hurt by the failure of the film, he couldn't bring himself to trim Fantasia down per RKO's requests, so RKO performed the edits on their own.

It's safe to bet Walt would have wanted you to have the stereo version.

I'd heard the reverse cause-effect:
After the Roadshow, Walt had to sell the distribution off to RKO outright just to pay off the costs of Fantasound; RKO did their own unsolicited editing to chop the Popular engagement down to a condescending Cuisinart version for Disney fans, and it flopped in the small towns.
Walt assumed the movie, not the Popular cut, had flopped, and brooded over how much "Audiences didn't understand it... " for the rest of his career. (On the upside, at least he never got around to releasing re-edited versions, either.)

(And not, say, any 80's re-recorded versions, either. )

Are you asking about how to get the coupon? Anyway, so far it looks like Target is the best place to get this. They'll have it for $27.99 and with the coupon that'll drop it down to $17.99 obviously.

Does the US version have a more extensive list of features than the UK release? Its (region A) been confirmed as region free at dvdworldusa so I'm quite tempted to order it today.
