![]() [Show spoiler] First-time viewings are indicated with an ^ [Show spoiler] 10/14/24: -Nope (2022): ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Following a mysterious incident when his father, noted horse wrangler Otis Haywood, Sr. (Keith David) is struck in the head and killed by a coin during an inexplicable rain of debris that falls from the sky, his son, "OJ" Haywood (Daniel Kaluuya) is struggling to keep the family business, Haywood's Hollywood Horses, afloat in a cinematic era where there's little call for equine performers. Even his brash little sister, Emerald (Keke Palmer) coming home to roost is not helping much. But OJ finds himself having to deal with bigger issues when he continues to catch teasing glimpses of a massive unidentified flying object gliding between the clouds over his homestead ranch nestled in a remote valley. Understandably unnerved, he and Emerald are also seeing dollar signs in their eyes, and work in tandem with a nervous Fry's Electronics employee (Brandon Perea) and gravel-voiced veteran cinematographer (Michael Wincott) in order to get the "Money Shot", incontrovertible evidence of an alien visitation of Earth. Jordan Peele's third directorial effort, Nope is a movie that indulgently sprawls in the manner that only the director of a buzzy, out-of-nowhere smash that even garnered Oscar attention can be given leeway for (call it the Shyamalan Effect). There are times when some of the subplots seem inexplicable, like flashbacks to a horrific incident during a silly 90s kids' sitcom where one of the young stars witnessed a chimpanzee going...well, apesh!t and savagely mauling a co-star (Steven Yeun plays that same boy, decades later coasting on the notoriety of the incident and acting as M.C. of a cheesy western theme park that borders OJ's ranch), but it all ties together, somewhat, with the film's themes about the exploitation of animals in Hollywood productions and how it can go terribly wrong. The "UFO", when it's finally revealed in full after being hinted at for much of the film, even ties into the western theme park in a way, resembling nothing so much as a giant, helium-filled cowboy hat before flowering to reveal one of the most unique creature designs in recent memory (that evokes something from the deepest trenches of the oceans rather than anything you've seen in a typical "alien invasion" flick). The film isn't terribly "scary" in the manner of Peele's Get Out or the underrated Us (still his strongest effort to date), yet at times it evokes a Spielbergian "Look at that...!" grandeur, ably supported by Michael Abels' percolating score that mixes awestruck orchestral swells with old-timey Copland-esque hoedown themes. Despite its messiness in coalescing its various thematic ideas, Nope is never less than intriguing, and it remains laudable that, like M. Night Shyamalan or Christopher Nolan, Peele remains one of the new "name-brand" filmmakers who can get major studio movies greenlit that don't have to be based on an established "IP". -Zombeavers ^ (2014): ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() A sextet of oversexed twentysomethings (Rachel Melvin, Hutch Dano, Cortney Palm, Lexi Atkins, Jake Weary, Peter Gilroy) have a weekend retreat at a remote cabin in the woods, but soon come to realize that toxic chemicals have leaked into the nearby lake, turning the local beaver population into a pack of white-eyed, chittering monsters that use their buck teeth to gnash their way through fortified doors and gnaw off stray limbs (one victim totes his severed foot around in a Ziploc baggie). Directed by Jordan Rubin, who co-wrote it with the inspired musical parodists Jon & Al Kaplan (who have "musicalized" countless classic 80s and 90s genre flicks on YouTube, as well as providing insidiously catchy jingles for the last two Terrifier movies. They also provide film score duties here), Zombeavers is a lightly amusing exercise in dumbbell horror/comedy, filled with the obligatory female genitalia jokes the title would suggest and plenty of cheesy puppetry and makeup effects. It never reaches the anarchic highs of films like Gremlins, Critters or Tremors, but it's an agreeable enough time-waster, with a handful of genuine laughs amidst the stoooooopid puns and gore gags. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Three years before Cher Horowitz was staking out a place for herself in life in "Clueless," Buffy Summers was staking vampires just to stay alive. Oh, the joys of living in Southern California! I haven't watched this film in more than a decade and I was happy to go back to Hemery High School again. Kristy Swanson made an excellent Buffy, filling the role with a necessary comic timing, an incessant valley girl attitude, and the caginess of an ass kicker-in-training. Donald Sutherland brings his usual brilliance to the role of Merrick, who helps "the chosen one" ready herself for her battles against evil. There's a natural connection between Swanson and Sutherland, particularly in the quieter moments of the film like when he makes his first joke regarding Buffy's keen fashion sense. The legend Rutger Hauer is severely underused in his appearances though. He has always offered a lot to every production which allows him to perform on all cylinders and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" seems to restrain his talent in an abnormal way. Hilary Swank is decent as Kimberly, but there's no definable hint of the future star power she would possess. On the other hand, Paul Reubens was great as Hauer's right-hand vampire and I wish he had been given more to do. His "pain of being staked" gag is one of my favorite moments in the film. I had forgotten Ben Affleck had a brief role as a basketball player. Director Fran Rubel Kuzui (who also directed the wondrous 1988 film "Tokyo Pop") balances the humor with an adequate amount of darkness to keep the farce from becoming an overbearingly camp catastrophe. "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" is a fun little film that serves as a good break between the more ghastly and ghoulish traditional horror yarns associated with the Halloween season. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() And the laughs just keep on coming! An annoying clown dies a hilariously gruesome accidental death at a children's birthday party, then comes back from the grave six years later to take his revenge. This is one of those films that has a streak of sick wit running through it about a mile long. The razor sharp sense of humor is accompanied by some surprisingly gnarly gore sequences which raises the level of entertainment that much more. Ross Noble is perfect as Stitches with his deadpan delivery and enlivened expressions. Tommy Knight and Gemma-Leah Devereux make a winning pair who move the tale forward while trying to avoid the crazed killing spree of the lunatic clown. To say that "Stitches" kept me in stitches would be an understatement. This film has some truly laugh out loud moments like the umbrella kill and Stitches seeing how many lives the cat has left. This is one of my favorite horror movies of the 2010 decade and I wish [Show spoiler] ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This is another first time watch for me and I must say . . . I wasn't disappointed. Ever wanted to watch people sing a Britney Spears song with a zombie? Ever wanted to watch Cloris Leachman try to gum a teenager's ass? Ever wanted to watch a small town scout dangle out a window while clutching a fat zombie's stretchy penis? You have?! Well then, this movie was made for you. Let's be honest, there are two kinds of gags in "Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse": low brow and toilet humor - and I mean that last one in the most literal sense during one memorable scene. Still, it made me howl over a number of instances and fulfilled my expectations entirely. Tye Sheridan and Logan Miller are funny as hell and could easily have made more awesome films together that focused on a pair of bantering buddies being thrust into the most outrageous of situations. Sadly, comedy duos aren't really a thing in modern cinema, which is a shame. Joey Morgan is a decent straight man but he doesn't have the screen presence of Sheridan or Miller and has a few problems keeping up with them. Sarah Dumont isn't the best badass woman in a horror film but she does play off the two leads in a believable fashion. Elle Evans also gives us . . . wait a minute. Could it be? Yes! She gives us zombie stripper nudity and gore in the same brief segment. Ding! Ding! Ding! We have a winner, folks! "Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse" is fast-moving, action-packed, super gory, goofy fun that I could easily see myself watching again a couple of years from now. CLASSIC OZZY FROM THE O.G. "BUFFY"
AND JUST BECAUSE I LOVE THE SONG, A BONUS FROM "SCOUTS GUIDE TO THE ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE" |

Speak No Evil (2024)
![]() I have not seen the original, but from my understanding this remake follows it pretty closely, except for the ending. I think both films go off the rails during the third act. I'm not 100% sure if I really liked the ending. There was a turning point where I said "Okay these people are stupid and they deserve what will follow". I think that is the common consensus of this - discussing and criticising every character's decision and what we'd do differently. It's honestly quite fun, if not super frustrating. James Mcavoy is great in this. He's horrible when he's evil (duh), but even when he's acting as the affable family man he's so insane and over the top. He's so icky and makes every scene uncomfortable. SCARES: I would consider this a thriller not a straight horror film, but the situation is definitely scary. CHEESE FACTOR: N/A KILLS & CREATIVITY: Sort of N/A. I won't say much because of spoilers but it was well constructed and multi-layered. The house was like a maze and was very intense when it needed to be. ![]() ![]() ![]() |
