House on Haunted Hill (1999) Better than it has any right to be. The cast (with one exception) is great, and the atmosphere is chilling. If only Ali Larter wasn't in this...

10/8:

The Mummy (1932) *First time viewing*
Creepy and atmospheric but a little too similar to Lugosi's Dracula and lacks the elements that made that film engaging.
One of the weaker films in the Universal Monster films.

The City of the Dead (1960)

First-Time Viewing

A bit dry, but good atmosphere. The Blu-ray looks good.

10/8 Hold The Dark (2018)

It's the kind of film that wants to get you thinking rather than tell you what to think. Which is good but the way it's developed could have been more engaging in some parts.

Unconventional. Breaks every 'rule' there is and just goes to show that absolutely anything can work if well executed. I love the creature effects and the randomness of the plot. There should be a lot more movies like this out there that are just weird and expressive, but with good production values and talent behind them. Wildly original and entertaining.

IT (2017) Even though Tim Curry was memorable as Pennywise the clown, this remake is a vast improvement over the made-for-tv film from the 90‘s. Its more visceral and graphic and provides some truly genuine scares. Bill Skarsgĺrd does a good job on his take as Pennywise the clown and I actually found myself warming up a bit more to his performance.

31 Days Of Halloween!!!

10/8: Poltergeist -

Previously Watched Films:

[Show spoiler]
10/1: Hereditary [First Time Viewing] -
I believe in everyone has a right to their own opinions, but I really don't get the hype for this movie. Had some good moments but overall I thought it was pretty meh, felt most the acting was bad(especially the son) and I had to fight to stay awake.
10/2: Mandy [First Time Viewing] -
What a ride this film was. Very trippy, visually stunning, and Cage played crazy/wild Cage. My favorite kind of Cage.
10/3: Summer Of 84 [First Time Viewing] -
Really dug the vibe and music of this one. Not something that has a lot of replayability but still worth checking out.
10/4: Child's Play -
10/5: Return Of The Living Dead (1985) -
10/6: Fright Night 3D (2011) -
There's only a few remakes that I like, this is one of them. Yes I love the original, yes it is a classic. But I love this one as well, and it's so great in 3D. Colin Farrell plays the part perfectly, the way he is aware of the surroundings at all times. Top notch. Usually add this to my October movies every year.
10/7: He's Out There [First Time Viewing] -
I have a big crush on Yvonne Strahovski. So I had to give this one a watch. Good idea but sadly not done well. Felt a bit too generic. If done right it could have been a pretty interesting horror flick.

11. House

After his aunt's death, Roger Cobb, a troubled writer, inherits her old house. But that house holds many painful memories for him, including the memory of his son's disappearance. At first, he plans to sell the house, but once he returns and his old memories resurface, he decides to stay a while so that he can have solitude while he writes his next book. But his aunt believed that the old house was haunted, and as Roger gets settled in, he quickly encounters the entities that still reside within the old house.

When I was a kid, I remember horror movies playing on TV all weekend long. House was one of those films that seemed to be on all the time, and it seems like I watched it whenever it came on. So I know that nostalgia plays a large part in my liking of this film, because it does have its problems, but it's a movie I just never tire of watching.

As far as haunted house movies go, House is not one of the scarier ones. In fact, House doesn't really take itself seriously at all, even if it does deal with a serious subject matter. Instead, it delivers a horror film with a healthy dose of comedy mixed in. Roger and Harold are a blast to watch as they encounter the creatures that manifest in the house, and you never know when something real is happening, or if it's just the house messing with Roger.

8 Oct - You're Next

Adam Wingard's first major outing comes out swinging and turns the home invasion slasher premise on it's tired head. An infectious 70s jingle (Dwight Twilly's "Lookin' for the Magic") gives us a sense of unease throughout, some interesting carnivorous killers, a refreshing twist (at least for the sub-genre)...and Sharni ****ing Vinson who kicks so much ass and is a HIGH contender for the greatest final girl....ever? I mean...she's the female Rambo in this. Why hasn't this been done before...and so well!?

Scanners (1981)
Well, I must have seen this before sometime in the past but--other than a few iconic moments that always appear on compilation shows--I didn't remember a single thing about Scanners. Wow, what a great movie! So lean and cool. I'd heard recently in a podcast that Stephen Lack isn't much of an actor... that's definitely true when he talks (some of the worst readings I've ever heard in a professionally made film!) but his physical acting is just fine. The story here is absolutely propulsive--Cronenberg does not get enough credit as a writer. Everyone remembers the exploding body parts but this is overlooked as an adventure story: Vale's journey through the scanner world is fascinating... too brief, but so tantalizing! If only there were some sequels that could explore the scanner phenomenon in more detail...

Edit: BTW this is the Second Sight BD. I think it looks very nice-- filmic and grainy with good color--and it was cheap on Amazon UK.

[Show spoiler]1/10 - John Carpenter's Halloween (1978)
2/10 - Halloween II (1981)
3/10 - April Fool's Day* (1986)
4/10 - Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982)
5/10 - Ghostbursters* (2016)
6/10 - Rob Zombie's Halloween (Unrated) (2007)
[Show spoiler]Too many f***ks". And weird looking face close ups... They feel too claustrophobic. The "Love Hurts" in the beggining, yeah, weird. I dunno how I barely remember all this details after watching the movie last year (or was it 2016?). The nurse at Smith Grove was a b**** honestly, and the Mama Myers suicide was really sad, after everthing that happened, your son being a psycopath must have been just it. The rape scene is way too much. The guy who was nice to him didn't deserved to die, IMO, but I liked the reference to Halloween 2. Oh, and then Mr. Sandman played. So cool. I want the 2018 movie to include it too. I believe Ben's death (Lynda's boyfriend) makes more sense here cause Michale chokes him instead of just stabbing him in a difficult way of actually killing with a knife. And Lynda reminds me of the Judith from this movie. I liked Laurie's fathers. They were good people. Danielle Harris was 30 in this, and I still can't believe there's people at that age that looks like seniors. Unless I'm used to high school movies with adults and that's why I see it like that. I much prefer the actual remake part of the original, while the original added bits in the beggining aren't my cup of tea. And everything since the Trick and Treat title card was nicely done IMO. But overall, I like the movie.

7/10 - Rob Zombie's Halloween II (Unrated) (2009)

I forgot to write what I saw yesterday.
8/10 - Copycat* (1995)

I loved it! It felt kinda like The Silence of the Lamb, but the suspense that really good, and the story intriguing.
