Since some are talking about Christmas, for some reason, my two cents is that Die Hard and A Christmas Story are the two best movies to watch during the holiday season.
And I used to love the TBS 15 Days of 007, that was Christmas tradition for me and my stepped back in the day.

Its dumb that at this late date we still don't have To Have and Have Not on Bluray. Not to mention The Big Sleep or Key Largo

on the topic.. I've always wanted to share this w/ people, but until now it would have been too random. for those of you who have iPhones with the Siri function, did you know that you can ask Siri, for example, "is Humphrey Bogart dead?" and it (umm.. she?) will give you his death age and date of death.

you can also ask something like, "which film won Best Picture in 1940?' and she'll tell you what it was. pretty cool
OK, I'll play this morbid game:

Zsa Zsa Gabor-97

On the subject of announcements:
In the last couple ones I didn't find anything that interested me, except The Big Chill.

Hope for a surprise with one of these, but I seriously doubt it:

-Farewell to my Concubine
-Raise the Red Lantern
-The Age of Innocence
-Cyrano de Bergerac (1990)
-Indochine
-Camile Claudel
-Tree of Life
(yes, I know it has been released and it has excellent quality)
-The Lover

and/or upgrades of:
-Magnificent Obsession
-Written on the Wind
-Summertime

Brace yourselves for Tootsie coming either November or December:

"Join Criterion Collection Producers Kim Hendrickson and Curtis Tsui as they provide a behind-the-scenes look at Criterion’s operation, focusing on recent and upcoming releases such as Federico Fellini’s La Dolce Vita (1960), Alfonso Cuarón’s Y tu mamá también (2001), Sydney Pollack’s Tootsie (1982), and John Ford’s My Darling Clementine (1946), among others."

Got my money on November

Yesterday I saw the Fantastic Mr. Fox, which was fantastic, and today I saw The Great Beauty, which was beautiful. Pretty in-depth analysis, huh?

Anyway I really loved both movies. They were both blind buys from the B&N sale and I'm really happy with both those purchases. Fox was the last Wes Anderson movie that I hadn't seen and it's now one of my favorites. And The Great Beauty (my first Italian film) had me from the first scene and was great the rest of the way through.

I was just watching Cowboys and Aliens (great, great underrated movie) and had an idea for a new film genre (I think it's new): Western noir. That would be a cinephile's dream come true. Come on Scorsese or Tarantino, make it happen!

No. Criterion has never (to my knowledge) released press-run data on any title.

The Great Owl has referred to some films as Western Noir. I think mostly in the Olive Films thread.

Check out Pursued.

Here's 7 more, though I don't think any of these have made it to blu ray yet.

I watched the Olive Films Blu-ray of Ramrod the other night. It qualifies as a "Western noir" of sorts. Veronica Lake and Joel McCrea both seem worlds removed from their lighter roles in Sullivan's Travels.

Pursued is still in my unwatched Blu-ray stack, but I'll get to it soon.
