Awesome news, Pro-B. I had to break a rule and go one-day shipping for The Seventh Seal; for whatever reason I never picked up the DVD (I sensed that an improved edition was around the corner) and the Tartan was enticing, but I knew Criterion's Blu would be forthcoming. I have no doubt it will be well worth the wait.

Double . It can't stay there though, I don't think Amazon would be that cruel. I hope we're not seeing the rebirth of the DVD price tiers here...

Nope. I think "Martyrs" is only available on Region B blu-ray from Optimum Home Entertainment right now. I'll be picking it up eventually. Check out pro-b's review of it on this site!

Whilst I haven't seen the Tartan version, the Criterion will be hard pressed to better it based on special features (and I have all the criterion special features on DVD). So I guess it will all come down to PQ and AQ...

It is a Weinstein Property in the US, so don't expect it anytime soon on Blu.

I dunno. The Bergman short Karin's Face is a nice addition, as is the onset footage, (both of which were SD) but when compared with Criterion's extras--the Cowie commentary with a newly recorded afterword, Bergman 101, the shorter version (still 83 min.) of the Bergman Island documentary, which, knowing Criterion, will be rendered in HD (new), the Max von Sydow audio interview (new), the Bergman introduction (2003, new) and even the 1989 Woody Allen tribute (new), along with another of Criterion's awesome booklets--not to mention the LPCM audio that technically bests Tartan's lossy DD 2.0 Mono track AND FINALLY that the Tartan was 25GB while Criterion's disc will almost certainly be 50GB with more than 25GB for the film, and I don't see much of a challenge from the Tartan. Don't get me wrong, the Tartan still a great package and the PQ is great, but I don't feel Criterion will end up second best in any department, be it PQ, AQ or extras.

Finally, this was something that always bugged the hell out of me on the Tartan (from the DVDBeaver Tartan Blu-ray review):

Wow. Of course. The one time I don't pre-order the day they go up (hoping for a buck or two off with my gold box), they jack 'em up $10.

Now, even if I do get a gold box discount, it'll still be ~$10 more than I wanted to spend in the first place.

In summation: what the hell, Amazon? Jerks.

I found this site with a quick "Froogle" search...... the site got mostly positive reviews, from a lot of transactions/ratings (5k+) but I've never heard of them..... GREAT price though not sure on shipping.... just getting ready to look into this more closely...

Shipping for me was $9 for both... making it about $29.50 for each title

Believe me, I'm waiting. The only heresy going on here is Amazon's current prices. That's just ridiculous.

Oh, well. August is pretty far away.

Hey, not bad! But I'm a new Prime member (still in my trial month), so pretty much all of my online pre-orders will be placed through Amazon. Thanks, though.

Glad I pre-ordered both at $26.99...

I'm sure Amazon will lower the prices again.

While we're patiently awaiting pro-b's review of "The Seventh Seal," I thought I'd throw up the link for DVDFile.com's review that I just came across. They now seem to spread their reviews out over a couple of pages so click the links at the bottom of the text to go on to the next section of the review.

See, that review was pretty basic. It was good, but we all knew that the PQ and AQ would be a major improvement over the DVDs. I'm excited to learn the technical aspects (bitrate, feature size, extras in HD or SD) and how much the Criterion improves upon the Tartan Blu-ray.

Man oh man!!! What a review! I'm a moviemaker myself, and Ingmar Bergman is like a God to me.

This movie is as it says in the review one of the best movies of all time!

When I was 18 years old way back in 96, I took a History of Film class as a freshman in college, and was introduced to Bergman. He was perfect for my late adolescent melencoly, but dispite the fact that I have a somewhat more optomistic outlook as an adult, the Seventh Seal remains one of my favorite films. Thanks for the great review, I am even more excited about this release now!!!
