Lebanon: 3.5 out of 4

A movie where you are all in one place, such as a submarine, just like in Das Boot. Now think of being in a tank, much smaller and more claustrophobic than a submarine, and little else to do in it. When you are in a vehicle, action is happening around you, a shock from an RPG can the instance of life and death, and you may wish you weren't there. You are given orders to move, fire and act in manners that question your own moral standard, even if you hate him. Getting out of it is a request for death.

In June 1982, Lebanon during the Lebanon, a group of Israeli paratroopers operate a tank on their way to breach out the enemy. Everything they do is in the tank, all they can see outside is what they are ordered to do, but that doesn't sit too well with the crew, often getting into hostile arguments with the higher authorities and the commander cannot control his crew. They encounter violent confrontations with rebels and insurgents, but most of what they kill are often collateral, even gaining support from two Phalangist aids that look like criminals. The film chronicles their mission through the inside of the tank and the gun sight, it is reflected by Samuel Maoz vision of his experience as a young Israeli soldier.

It works both as an anti war film about soldiers that fight in something that reflects little and as a horror film about the imprisonment of being in the war, which in this case involves being in a tank. It is a claustrophobic experience that makes you feel that you are participating in the tank, smelling the urine spill, the smoke of the engine, the kick of firepower, and oil leaking, all of which are authentically presented. You will wish you were not in there, but came to awe it's authenticity and endure such harshness in something confined as you empathize the people stuck in there as well as what they find and even kill. Winner of the Leone d'Oro at the 66th Venice film festival, and the first Israeli film to win that honor.

This is why its a dangerous comparison. Apart from "people facing natural conditions," the comparison is night and day...especially the filming technique which was peoples #1 complaint with Open Water. The directing/cinmetagoraphy couldn't be more dissimilar.

Yeah, sadly he has a problem. You know, like the dudes that spend their whole paycheck at a stripper bar and think the girls like them. I have urged Diesel to seek help, alas, to no avail. 12 step programs are free, but he wont listen. Denial is a tragedy to watch play out. He gets his truck washed and before he gets home he's plowing through a muddy field or dirt lot just so he has an excuse to go back again. Pretty soon he's going to propose to one of those gals...and thats when the stories always get really sad.

If you are gonna see this at theaters, good luck then. I was lucky enough to find a screening of that film (I think it's the only screening when I looked it up as of this writing). What's worse, when I was at the screening at the film, the screen was literally 10 feet wide (seriously) and they didn't even bother moving the curtains of the screen, it appeared they did a film scanner on a digital projector, and they used only two channels of audio (likely from a DD film coding), lacking the depth of audio this deserves (they had multichannel audio in the theater).

I think there is a UK blu ray for this film, pick that or wait for the US blu ray.

I'm not a big fan of that stuff either. I'll watch em, but they're not really Horror films to me. I just posted on The Exorcism of Emily Rose and The Blair Witch Project, I'd rather watch those types of horror films.

[Show spoiler]he lost in the end, though he ultimately won by getting the world's and Apollo's respect and of course, getting Adrian's love.
I've never seen the others (except for #6) so it'll be fun to go through them all this winter.
You'll most likely be somewhat less impressed with the others

I like them all though

Haha that's right, I remember that's why you didn't like Paranormal Activity. You gotta see Exorcism of Emily Rose man, you'll love it! I generally don't like many horror films because most of them are garbage (for me), but this one is very well done.
