Watched the 4k disc last night. I didn't do any direct comparisons, but I thought it looked pretty amazing! Last I watched it was streaming on Disney+, but I thought everything about the disc looked great. Had some thumping bass in some parts too! Favorite scene in terms of sights and sounds was perhaps Ursula's song.

Finally had a chance to watch this tonight. A very welcome upgrade over the 2k BD. The 1999 DVDs sound track, which is supposed to be the same ac3 mix the 97 theatrical run has, is still better than even the newest Atmos mix even when I use my Atmos set up which is a little infuriating... But synching it was easy enough. Now I just gotta learn to deal with the wife watching this daily again for a few months

Don’t get me wrong, there’s a slightly noticeable quality bump (color and highlight refinements mostly) but ultimately 2K CAPS movie is 2K CAPS movie.

Sadly, the cel-animated films that would benefit the most from a fresh 4K restoration are, barring a miracle, unlikely to ever receive a UHD release

Would TLM hugely benefit since it is cel and not computer animated, if only they didn't dnr it? I know this is a dumb question.

Yeah a modern scan and restoration like cinderalla got, along with some tasteful lite dnr, would be wonderful for TLM. Especially if they would finally release its dolby 6 track 70mm sound track.

Comparing the 1999 dvd and my 1990 laserdisc(played through my avr dolby upmixer to extract the matrix surround). I'm fairly confident that the 99 dvd(and presumably the 98 laserdisc 5.1) use the same 4.0 base stems as the 1990 laserdisc/ 1989 35mm dolby stereo and presumably the 70mm 4.1. With a few slight alterations such as the credits song in the case of the 98/99 releases. which would explain why the releases after 1999 have crappy sound mixes. new remixes made for low end home usage instead of just being slight tweaks to the original theatrical mix.

So The Lion King does not have dnr since it was computer animated and shouldn't have grain?

correct. lion king was all digital. so it not having grain is fine. granted a tasteful layer of computer generated grain also wouldnt be a bad thing if disney did that.

If The Lion King was created all digital, why does the IMDB Technical Aspects report it to be a 35mm source? I assuming that they animated it digitally, then film-out, or was it created with traditional CAPS? https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0110357/technical/

Watched the 4K of the original (aka "real") Little Mermaid this morning, and mourned the Disney of the late-80s/early 90s "Renaissance Period" that used to push forward with bold, original ideas, instead of wanly rehashing their past triumphs using "inclusionary" casting gimmicks as a smokescreen to disguise how creatively and morally bankrupt they've become over the last decade. The animated film remains one of the crown jewels in their animated filmography, a joyous and delightful fairy tale brimming with shimmering, colorful animation (which you can actually SEE, instead of the desaturated murk of the new version), enthusiastic vocal performances and an Alan Menken/Howard Ashman score that contains some of the greatest songs in any Disney production. From the aching wistfulness of "Part Of Your World" to the infectious Caribbean groove of "Under The Sea" to the amorous bounce of "Kiss The Girl" (one of the sweetest, most romantic scenes in the Disney canon, and it's baffling why it's now considering "Rapey" by today's hysterical social media outrage standards), it's all effortlessly entertaining for young and old. The fact that the horrible-looking new version will likely gross over a billion worldwide this summer out of misplaced "nostalgia" when fans who grew up on the original can just, I dunno WATCH THE ORIGINAL AGAIN is actively depressing. And it's even sadder to know that a new generation of kids are getting force-fed the moldy leftovers from what their parents grew up on, instead of being allowed to have their own original films they can hold dear to their hearts and grow up with as formative classics. but why have that, when we can have a joyless, ugly retread that exists to punch diversity buttons and appease a tiny subset of Twitter users who are appeased that the new version "fixes all of the problems" of the previous version instead of the millions of families worldwide who used to hold Disney to the highest standards of quality imaginable? Just stay home, watch the original on D+ (or, preferably, on the sparkling 4K disc), and consign this new version to the trash heap of the dreariest, most brand-damaging era in Disney's history since the days of those direct-to-video "Cheapquels".
