I wouldn't understimate the audience's apathy. It seems like everybody I know couldn't care less about TFA, citing their disappointment in the PT (and it makes me sad
![]() The movie will undoubtedly make money, but given the SW fatigue everybody feels now, I have to agree that it'll be TDK levels, not Titanic levels. Word of mouth might push it over the top, but only if the film is actually good, and if people can get over the Lucas/Abrams hate. |

Because the Prequels were a huge disappointment. I mean, they only made about $2.5 billion without the heightened 3D and IMAX ticket prices of the last ten years. And The Clone Wars didn't create an new legion of younger fans or anything. Yeah, that's a lot of apathy.

Yes, the PT made loads of money, but that doesn't mean they were critical successes. Why do people want to get all hyped up again for something they fear will be just as flawed and cheesy as the last round of movies? Past box office performance of the PT owes everything to the extremely high expectations that were generated back in that timeframe. Now, the expectations are significantly lower, precisely because the hype of the PT was set too high and people walked away disappointed (and yes, they are disapponted, otherwise the fanbase wouldn't be as ravenous as it is now). Chances are that the low expectations will work on the new films' favor, with audiences walking away feeling more satisfied, but my ultimate point is that audience expectation and critical success will tie into performance. It looks to me that expectations are currently low, so the box office performance will be low. If the movie is well-received, expectations and performance will undoubtedly be higher for Ep. VIII. Outside of message boards I don't know anyone who isn't excited about star wars, unless they never cared about star wars movies in the first place.

Simple fact is that the PT followed the same pattern as the OT. The first movie is a huge smash, the second sees a significant drop off and the third grosses somewhere in between. I guess Empire is considered a disappointment since it made $100M less than Star Wars. I guess it was all doom and gloom with your type of fan at that point as well. The PT made a ton of money, sold a lot of tickets, created an entirely new generation of fans along with The Clone Wars, and brought Star Wars back into the public conscientious. None of this has jack shit to do with your opinion of the movies, which I don't care about. Just get your facts straight. |

That is my observation - having nothing to do with personal opinion, because I think all the movies totally rock - and I do realistically believe that the box office return for TFA will be grand but not above-and-beyond the records established previously by Titanic, Avatar, Avengers, etc. Quote:

The 3D release of TPM was about average with other 3D re-releases like Jurassic Park and Beauty and the Beast in North America. The Lion King has been the only 3D re-release that really pulled in serious money with Titanic in second pretty far behind. Last edited by Kryptonic; 01-14-2015 at 06:05 PM. |

I'm happy that you love all of the films as well. ![]() I too agree that The Force Awakens is going to make a shit load of money, but it's probably not going to hit Titanic or Avatar levels. Nothing would please me more, but it's probably not in the cards. |
