Like you said, Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind and then Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1981 were absolutely MASSIVE hits. He was certainly a household name by 1982. Everyone knew who he was after Jaws. That was enough.

I mean, he was enough of a household name at the time that MGM saw fit to plaster his name all over the poster for Poltergeist, knowing that his name being attached to the picture was a huge draw for theater goers in the early '80s.

This isn't a BD, but I guess because Warner are distributing MGM titles they can put together a release like this Poltergeist Collection.

I get why they did what they did for that cover from an Aesthetic stand point, but what a weird thing to ultimately decide on... listing Poltergeist 2, then the original, and then the 3rd film in that order like that.

That cover totally works for me. The best movie is front and center and is the obvious focal point, and then "those other movies" are off to the sides. As it should be.

Tickets for the 40th Anniversary theatrical shows are on sale for the last week of September...here's hoping we get an actual BD/UHD remaster as well.

Dawnofthediscs is reporting that a 4k of this film is being released in Sweden on October 3, 2022 thanks to a Swedish retail listing at https://cdon.fi/elokuvat/poltergeist...u-ray-97225391 Given Warner controls all distribution of this film I'm willing to bet we'll be seeing a US release announced in the next few weeks as well.

I'm good with my Blu-ray, but for those who pick it up, hopefully there's an extensive interview with "producer/writer/co-director" Steven Spielberg on there.

Doubt the UHD will have any new on-disc extras. Warners don't care enough. Look at Beetlejuice.

Between Dominique Dunne, Heather O'Rourke, Spielberg vs Hooper, etc I can't imagine Warner wanting to dig too deep into the behind-the-scenes / special features of this one. Same goes for Twilight Zone: The Movie.

In any case, Hooper likely never felt threatened by Spielberg’s presence on set. It is only fanboys on the defense/offense (which includes journalists in 1982 - and there were people on Hooper’s side, even back then) that make constant litigating of what clearly feels like a Hooper film, produced and subject to notes by Spielberg, such a tedious and tiresome ritual.
