It's partially the people that go all crazy over the latest big movie and declare it the greatest movie ever with each passing movie they see that cause it. The review here was good, if not a little gushing.

An odd statement, as Nolan, in an interview with The Star, acknowledged The Matrix, Existenz, Last Year in Marienbad, and 2001: A Space Odyssey as forerunners and influences to Inception [except Marienbad, which he says he hadn't seen before writing Inception, but conceded the similarities after viewing the film]. He also said, in an interview with the LA Times: "[Inception] is more of 'The Matrix' variety and the concepts of different levels of reality ... it was very much pulled from that era of movies where you had 'The Matrix,' you had 'Dark City,' you had 'The Thirteenth Floor' and, to a certain extent, you had 'Memento' too. They were based in the principles that the world around you might not be real."

One of the biggest problems with this film, and, to a certain extent all films that deal in dreams, is that the suspense is deflated because the characters aren't really in any sort of actual danger. I know, I know, there's tons of exposition in the film as to why they actually are in danger – if you die in a dream you die in real life, etc. etc. - but Nolan seems to expend many pages of screenplay, and jump through many hoops to make us really care about what's happening on screen.

Ultimately, the biggest failure of this film is that, for a movie that purports to be about dreams, it's just not very dreamlike. I don't know about you, but for me dreams are amorphous, mercurial, every-shifting, with unclear threats and menaces that are often sexually charged and mysterious. Nolan seems to think dreams are a James Bond film, with men on snowmobiles with machine guns, or fancy four-star hotel rooms, or vans full of hilarious 80's-style goateed Eurotrash assassins with automatic weapons. Perhaps these are the dreams of the wealthy hollywood elite, but my dreams are either far more mundane, or far more strangely beautiful or terrifying.

So, lacking in any dreamlike atmosphere, what we're left with is one big long logic puzzle, and it's just not very interesting. Sure, the separate timelines thing is interesting for 10 minutes, but then it just gets tiresome. And the big shootout at the snowy compound is just so video-gamish and boring.

Anyway, movies are a matter of taste, obviously, but there's no way this can be considered the best film of all time. Citizen Kane, Apocalypse Now, Goodfellas, Days of Heaven, maybe. But not this!

Thanks, you pretty much answered your own question there. What you've said was how YOU think a dream should look or feel like. And Inception is quite obviously Nolan's vision. Good day.

If it takes so much dialog to explain it, then maybe you've put too many unintuitive mechanics into your movie I've seen the movie twice. I'm convinced I could make a 60+ minute edit just out of scenes where characters explain how the dream invasion works. I guess it didn't bother you, but I thought that time could've been better spent fleshing out the supporting cast, for instance, who I never really came to care about. Just my opinion.
