If my house caught on fire, I would blame streaming.

If you have insurance you can buy it all again. When anything that is only available through streaming services is delisted it is gone forever... for everybody.

Mostly, yes, but I lost my Criterion DVDs of Robocop and Silence of the Lambs to theft, and they were out of print.

That's what the used market is for.

I'm not concerned about my own collection. With streaming the concern is that something will become unavailable to everyone.

I was reminded last night why physical media is superior as I waited for my stream to start for 20 minutes....and I have 50 Mbps download speed here. I mean seriously content providers. Get your crap together. Of I were at my in laws it would have been days.

If my house caught fire, I'd buy new discs. If I had to wait, not big deal. 4K is coming and they'll probably get me for about 100 titles.

Every time I hear "Oh, well, 4K's coming and it'll replace everything"--as applied to the futures of hard media AND 3D--I keep thinking it sounds like those gloom-freebasing folks who say "Oh, well, guess we've got to start sending our kids to Chinese immersion schools, they're going to take over the economy in five years..."

(...Ohh, of course they will. Getting our personal daily high of social anxiety there, Eeyore?)

Not if you download to your hard drive.

Hard drives can crash to and that would also go up in flames if your house caught fire

Another thing worth noting streaming and digital look and sound terrible on large screens while Blu Ray look and sound amazing

Off topic(kind of)

Bought S1 True Blood and the digital copy expires 5/31/14.

I want to pick up the rest of the seasons but probably not by 5/31. What happens in June? Anyone buying true blood is out of luck or do they re-issue somehow?

^ My guess is the later seasons won't expire on the same time as Season 1, since they were released at a later date. Someone who owns them could probably confirm, but that would be the logical explanation.

Usually studios have been pretty good at supporting titles past their expiration date, but that is no guarantee. I believe True Blood S1-4 have the same expiration date due to being re-released with digital copies on the same date that Season 4 combo back hit stores. Season 5 should expire at a later date.

sorry to gravedig but a good example came to me.

i have all my music in the cloud after my ipod got stolen a few years ago.

its inferior to a CD or even having an mp3 player or the song on my sdcard, but its more convenient. Lugging around a phone and an mp3 player was a bit of a pain and having it all on one device is so much easier plus no need to have the storage space.

its so much easier having everything right there. does it sound/look as good? No but its good enough for me and its easier and available anywhere.

Plus i started my bluray collection around 4 years ago.. ive only watched one of them.
