The natural tones were nice, but as much as I hate to admit this, I think the MGM Blu-Ray has a better overall picture quality, even with the red push.
The grain is supposed to be there and looks really good because of the 4k scan. If you dislike it then fair enough, but with these new scans and label releases focusing on enthusiasts who like the look of film you might have a rough go of it in the future. Perhaps try and adjust to it and embrace the look of real film.

Also, make sure your settings are correct. The wrong settings like too high a color temp or sharpening can make grain look worse and more like noise.

I watched Shout's! new Carrie blu ray last night and am very impressed. The transfer is excellent and it's loaded with great special features. I'm a huge fan of Sean Clark's Horror's Hallowed Grounds episodes.

Kinda funny how no one has this available but Amazon with their ridiculous price. Looks like I'll be waiting a while for this one.

Funny how an old master which is usually seen as terrible is suddenly good whenever there's a 4K remaster available.

The old master is crap: magenta push, blown contrast which ruins the hazy look and poor definition. Been saying it for a while now but these DVD-era MGM masters are some of the worst out there and tend to be some of the most inaccurate representations of films I've seen.

Pre-ordered this and The Thing from Amazon a while back and I nearly shat brick upon seeing my CC bill - over £30 each! I don't think I've spent that much on individual titles since the days of Laserdisc. I might have to put importing on hold until the British pound can claw it's way out of the financial gutter.

Or you could buy them from Wow HD instead, this and The Thing cost me just under £20 each.

When I pre-ordered at Amazon I anticipated them coming in at around £19 each shipped. However, the recent drop in the value of the £ must have pushed them over the import limit with Amazon then applying their own duty fees (+ my CC company hitting me with non Sterling transaction fees). Took my eye off the ball with this one.

Will definitely look to Wow HD for future imports.

Ah, right. If you ordered them individually for less than $20 apiece (that being amazon's threshold before applying their own customs fees IIRC) but the fees got tacked on later by Amazon then that sucks. Still, even if they'd escaped the amazon customs fees you might have been hit with customs at this end as $20 is now over the £15 limit, so you could've been looking at £8 + duty for each one anyway.

Best thing to do with anything near/on the limit is get it from wow (though given the drop in sterling plus amazon's increased postage charge I haven't even bought any 'cheapies' from Amazon.com in a good long while) but even they're not perfect as they have a habit of cancelling orders if they can't fulfil them immediately.

Carrie & The Thing came in at $22.99 & $21.06 respectively, so with both being over Amazon's import fee threshold at the time of ordering, it looks like I've only got myself to blame for this one. Not sure how I didn't notice the fees nor how I got it into my head I'd only be paying around £19 each. Hey-ho...I have now cancelled Exorcist III & Black Christmas and I'll be re-ordering from Wow HD.

I wonder who makes the decision, in picking the artwork, that winds up on the discs? Love Shout/Scream's product, but the disc art, is sometimes weird. Could they not find a pic of Sissy Spacek to put on a disc? What about a pic of Carrie & Tommy? If they HAD to put a pic of Travolta, could they not have found one, of him with Nancy Allen? Why not just poster art?

The disc art for Return of the Living Dead and Saturn 3 also leave a lot to be desired. I do love them using various posters on the discs for Lifeforce and The Thing.

Oh well, the movie looks and sounds awesome!!

I realize I could've searched more places but unless we're talking Criterions, I don't think of B&N as a place to buy BD cheap. Never thought to check there.

Watched this last night and was not really impressed by the PQ
I still have the old MGM to compared and yes, this new edition from SF looks a bit better but I think the whole new 4K transfer is overrated IMHO.

I think however great the SF disc is, the flaws of the MGM disc have been overstated. Certainly there's a red push (and I find the disc looks more pleasing with the red saturation dialed back a bit), but you wouldn't put that on and say that's a bad disc. Compression is fine, despite Mpeg-2, no DNR or EE to speak of. Could contrast be more refined? Sure, but it doesn't look boosted. At that point we're splitting hairs, imo.

I think this is the case where the movie is just inherently softer and hazier with only so much potential detail. If or when this makes it to UHD BD, I suspect the improvement detail will be very negligible at best (like Ghostbusters). I think the color is the biggest improvement between the original and new BD. The grain consistency looks more natural on the caps with the SF too although I have not watched it yet.

I'll have to see if my local Suncoast/FYE has this. If I'm going to pay a lot for this, I might as well support the local economy.

After I received it a few days ago, I basically gave this top priority. I watched it last night, and the transfer is simply incredible. It easily blows the old MGM release away. I love the way the grain looks, it couldn't be more perfect. I wasn't old enough to see it in the theatre when it first came out, but I think it's safe to say that this is as close to a film-like image that we're going to see. The new extras are great as well. I love the interviews, it's just too bad that they weren't able to get one with Sissy Spacek. The new Horror's Hallowed Grounds episode is great too. Those have become something that I look forward to most with many of Scream Factory's releases. Another thing that I have always liked about Scream's releases is the double-sided cover art. I always use the slip cover for the new and turn the cover art around so that I have the new on the outside and the old on the inside.

"Not a huge upgrade."

"Blew the old disc away!"

I think it comes down to TV size, TV calibration and your own eyesight. These 4k remasters tend to make my jaw drop more often than not.
