It's not a retort, just an observation. I don't necessarily disagree with some of the points, just saying it was long winded rant about something that is tired by now.

Right, but then why not make a new version of the story, instead of remaking the specific animated 1989 movie?

Same tired reply. I don't give a shit that Ariel is black, but I do give a shit that the new movie looks like ass. I do find it annoying that Disney uses "You're RACIST if you don't like the new version...!" as a shield to cowardly hide behind, and that Disney drones just parrot it over and over.

These are facile responses to what I thought were some valid points by Monterey Jack. Cherry-picking a comment he made about diversity out of the context of his post to dismiss it entirely and attack him personally is unfair. I don't think he was griping about diversity/inclusion, but about Disney's recent cynical application of it. The "Renaissance" era he championed in his post was itself very diverse and inclusive in an organic and non-political way. He even gave a special shout out to Howard Ashman, a gay man who is arguably the single greatest creative force behind the launch of the Disney Renaissance era. Two of the three songs he praised in his post were performed by a black man.

Where I disagree with Monterey Jack is that I don't think Disney is creatively and morally bankrupt or "force feeding" the remakes on the public. The public wants them. If they didn't, Disney wouldn't be making them. It's a cash grab. But I think the remakes are harmless and I'd prefer their revisionism over Disney altering or suppressing the originals.

He's also wrong about kids not growing up with their own original films, as Disney Animation and Pixar are regularly supplying audiences with new groundbreaking and wonderful films.

Prepare to be triggered Mermaid Live-Action defenders. You'll never be a worthy successor/alternative to the animated classic. Time will forget you rather quickly. This will be a period at Disney they'll talk about many moons from now as what not to do.

Well, when your first reactions to an original/non-remake film are these:

It's impossible to imagine someone as perfectionist as him not doing so, like artists are overall regarding their creations, they always want to fix anything they feel embarrassed by. That level of attachment to one's own work is the beauty of art, the human expression from oneself.

Here's a quote from Walt:

“No matter how good a picture we turn out, I can always see ways to improve it, when it’s too late. So I try to put the idea to work in the next picture. I’m just as amazed at the success of our cartoons as anyone else. Sometimes I pinch myself to make sure I’m not dreaming.” – “What Has Disney Got that We Haven’t?” by Frank Taylor The Commentator magazine October 1938

I wouldn't have had an issue if Walt Disney had decided to change his own films, I just don't think others have a right to do it now.

I completely agree. My point is about the discussion a few pages back in this thread about how there isn't as big of a push for non-revisionist releases of the BIG FOUR Renaissance films because their directors liking and approving all such revisions. One user got so vitriolic and angry about this to the point that he said something like "This is why it's better off for directors and cinematographers to be dead". Jesus Christ. I'll never get behind such hate towards artists. It's what I've also been arguing in another hot-headed discussion about Lucas in the American Graffiti 4K thread, there are always those people who hate his guts, and who overall don't tolerate anything but a 100% untouched restoration, any small tweak makes their blood boil in vitriolic anger and hatred. I know that Lucas isn't exactly the example of small tweaks, but you see the same kind of reaction by some people to the tweaks in the Indiana Jones 4K discs. One shouldn't have to like these changes, but this personal hate towards artists being possessive of their own art, as I honestly expect any passionate artist to be, is really disturbing to me.

And this happens in almost any live-action adaptation of animation.

I think there are rumors of a Miles Morales live-action movie, and I can only think "no, please don't". I wouldn't trade the expressiveness and fantasy of the Spider-Verse films for anything.

That's not to say that live-action can't be expressive, bold and heavily stylized, but that's rarely the approach that Hollywood's big studios take in their expensive blockbusters, for fear of alienating mass audiences (which is not an entirely unfounded fear, consider the box-office bomb of Speed Racer in 2008, by the same directors of Matrix, or the Dick Tracy film from the 90s, all gloriously over-the-top, stylized and formalist cinema, but Tim Burton also proved that these approaches can be successful at the box office too, such as the incredible visual flair of his Batman movies).

Mermaid came with a slip. Lion King came without one... and was a standard Blu-ray. Second time this month that's happened.

Yeah. Edit: Oh, nevermind, it says it's the 4K version, but it's in a blue case. Weird.

Well, if they make some live-action remakes, then fans can simply choose the version they prefer, and everyone's happy.

I hated the remake of TLK, but when it comes to TLM, I way prefer the remake.

So, as always, YMMV, but clearly there is a big market for the remakes, so they'll continue making them.
