![]() [Show spoiler] First-time viewings are indicated with an ^ [Show spoiler] 10/17/24: The Ring (2002): ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() A cursed videotape -- one purported to kill you seven days after you've watched it -- falls into the orbit of a pair of teenage girls, one who is left dead, the other hopelessly insane. The dead girl's aunt, Rachel Keller (Naomi Watts), who makes a living as a journalist in rain-swept Seattle, Washington, utilizes her skills to investigate the origins of said videotape, and when she views it for herself, received a phone call immediately afterwards, a child's voice whispering over the open line, "Seven days..." Soon, she follows the clues to the remote island of Moesko, where she digs into a tragedy from the past that has laid tendrils into the present that threaten Rachel, her young son Aidan (David Dorfman) and her ex Noah Clay (Martin Henderson), and which looks to spread its evil ever farther. The official kickoff of the "J-Horror" trend of the early -to-mid 2000s, where Hollywood got into the habit of remaking Japanese horror movies for the American market, The Ring is the best of the bunch, directed with elegant restraint by Gore Verbinski and bathed in Bojan Bazelli's sickly cinematography that give the movie a cumulative creepiness that gets under your skin (assisted by Hans Zimmer's effectively atmospheric, "Tubular Bells"-like soundtrack). Watts also lends the movie screamy conviction as she fights to save her son and her sanity from a restless spirit that burns with thwarted sorrow and rage. -Piranha 3DD ^ (2012): ![]() ![]() ![]() A year after a school of ravening Piranha fish turned a resort at Lake Victoria, Arizona, into an orgy of bloodletting, they've bubbled up into a new lake near an water park run by a duplicitous David Koechner and his stepdaughter (the charming Danielle Panabaker from TV's The Flash, always stuck in genre crap like this and the lousy 2009 Friday The 13th remake), and once again they're chewing off feet, arms and...other appendages, in this utterly rote sequel to Alexandre Aja's entertaining 2010 remake of Joe Dante's 1978 favorite. But, lacking Aja's sicko penchant for imaginative grue, 3DD only lives up to its title with its bevy of unclothed mammaries presented in the eye-popping third dimension that cannot be appreciated on its gimmicky level due to the extinction of 3D-capable TV sets. What's left is a soggy noodle of a horror/comedy, neither frightening or funny, padded out to a scant 82 minutes with an endless end-title crawl full of lame outtakes (with David Hasselhoff cashing a check as Himself, playing the park's celeb lifeguard and giving about as much of a shit about his job as the filmmakers did about theirs). Throw this one back and watch the original...uhhhh, remake again. |

Maxxxine ![]() 6/10 I wanted to like this more but I thought it was the weakest of the X trilogy. I wish they would have shown all of the kills as they happened but most of them you don't see happen. This one also doesn't feel as messed up as the previous two. That messed up factor kinda added to them. This honestly could have been a made for TV movie. Great cast though The Furies ![]() 5/10 Some nice gore in this film. Though low budget I was entertained Late Night With the Devil ![]() 8/10 Thought this one was pretty good. Dastmalchian was great. I hope this helps establish him more. Very underrated actor. Spare Parts ![]() 5/10 Nice concept but I feel this could have been much better. Arena fights are always fun to watch though. Smiley Face Killers ![]() 2/10 This movie was pretty bad. The pacing was horrible. The camera shots in some parts were pretty bad. I didn't feel connected to any of the characters. The Platform(2019) 6/10 This was an interesting film. One that really makes you think. Wish it didn't have a cliff hanger ending though. Last edited by FlamedLiquid; 10-18-2024 at 04:52 AM. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() It's amazing how many subgenres of horror exist in cinema. One of the most beloved is the zombie film and there have been many successful examples over the years. However, there have only been a few truly grand zombie comedies and "Shaun of the Dead" certainly earns its place within the ranks. Simon Pegg is such a raw comic talent and director Edgar Wright knew how to unleash Pegg's full potential. I love that the film focuses on Pegg's banal job and broken relationship while the zombie outbreak occurs only on the furthest periphery until it has no choice left to but to directly affect Pegg's social circle. Nick Frost is a spectacularly passive counterpart to Pegg's blue collar everyman role and they work better together than any comedy duo I've personally seen since Abbott and Costello. Watching them deal with the first two zombies they run across outside their flat is hilarious. They try battling them with toasters and vinyl records before they break open a shed to find more useful, if not more traditional, weaponry. Bill Nighy and Penelope Wilton are good as Pegg's parents but I was hoping for more from Kate Ashfield as Pegg's love interest. She reminds me of too many typical rom-com characters from the same time period, i.e., she's a pleasant fit but she really only exists as a catalyst for Pegg's personal growth process and doesn't possess enough individuality of her own. This film places all of its comedic elements in the right positions but at the end of the day . . . it's still a zombie film at heart. In that respect, it doesn't skimp on zombie action and there are a few good squirts of the old red, sticky stuff to satisfy more sanguinary tastes. The epilogue is a brilliant capper that wraps things up nicely and the inclusion of two well-placed Queen songs are the cherry on top of the whole cinematic sundae. While "Shaun of the Dead" might not be quite as uproarious as the Pegg/Frost/Wright follow-up "Hot Fuzz," it's still rollicking fun in its own right. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() "They're coming to get you, blu-ray.com!" This film contains one of the most iconic opening sequences in the history of horror and, if we're being honest, perhaps one of the most iconic finales as well. "Night of the Living Dead" set the standard for every zombie movie that followed; those slow, lumbering, risen corpses that want to stalk our streets and eat our flesh. Director George A. Romero lays the tension on so thick you'd practically need a blowtorch to cut that sucker. We might begin in a cemetery, but the spookiest location is one you might not expect: an isolated farmhouse. There's a deep sense of claustrophobia attached to being trapped in familiar surroundings. I know, as I was trapped by my own anxieties for a large number of years and felt like the walls were physically closing in on me. But to know that behind those walls lay an even greater terror? No, thank you. There are only eight major players in this film, and of those, only three are central to the plot. Judith O'Dea plays Barbara - a woman in possession of an uncomprehending adult's body retreating into the mind of a scared little girl - extraordinarily well. Duane Jones is a dependable leader figure who tries his best to remain rational, fending off pigheadedness and insanity as well as attacks from the living dead. Karl Hardman is representative of the typical mid-life, middle America male who thinks he has all the answers and will vehemently argue against anyone who questions his decision-making abilities. Put these three characters together under strenuous circumstances and they're a powder keg waiting to explode. There are many reasons why "Night of the Living Dead" is a cherished piece of celluloid and it deserves every ounce of praise it receives. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() "Night of the Living Dead" might have made the mold, but a decade later director George A. Romero would return with the second chapter which would break that mold completely. I watched the extended edition of the film this evening. I'm not entirely sure which cut is my favorite, although I do feel like I gravitate back to the extended edition more often than not. The opening of "Dawn of the Dead" might not be as iconic as its predecessor, but it sets up the rapidly escalating plight effectively. You really get a sense of the global threat the original film could only offer in hints. Ken Foree mixes the leadership qualities of the first chapter's Duane Jones with the deft sophistication of French legend Alain Delon. Scott H. Reiniger always seems to be standing on an edge between rationality and hyperactivity and isn't exactly confident which side is going to win, which makes him all the more interesting. Gaylen Ross is the glue that holds the group together with her gentle reminders of civilization and quiet watchfulness, participating only when she's left with no other option. Gaylen's decisions on how to play her part are fascinating - another actress might not have been able to add the kind of structure Gaylen brings to the main quartet. David Emge is the most limited character - unfortunately most likely by design - and it's hard to root for him in the same way you root for his compatriots. He's not bad by any means, but he does [Show spoiler] It's a little weird seeing Joe Pilato in a small role early in this film when he would become the central representation of military insanity for "Day of the Dead" seven years later. Late in the game, when a biker gang tries to take over the mall, special effects wizard Tom Savini appears on screen and is provided with an opportunity to chew scenery like a wolf attending a ten-course lamb dinner. The levels of gore in "Dawn of the Dead" were off the charts for the late seventies and most of the practical effects still offer shocks for the bloodthirsty masses of today (myself included). The make-up effect for the zombies is another item altogether. Their gray/blue coloring gives the zombies an almost extraterrestrial appearance which is the only minor drawback for this masterpiece of horror. The central parable of mindless "zombie" consumerism still holds true in the modern world, only now the malls aren't as popular as the internet shopping sites. I guess the more things change, the more they really do stay the same. Either way, "Dawn of the Dead" will reign supreme in the archives of terror for as long as cinema exists. THE DEAD SHALL RISE,
AND THEY SHALL HAVE THEIR TUNES! |

October 16th - Feels Like A Werewolf Wednesday:
Film #31. The Wolf Man (1941) ![]() Well, October 16th is officially the middle of the month with 15 days of Halloween fun behind us and 15 days more ahead of us. Thanks to my double feature strategy, I have now reached the "minimum viewing quota" many individuals set for themselves as a goal to reach by the very end of the entire month (which is 31 films in total). Phew! I must admit, I'm a bit relieved to have reached this goal already and be ahead of schedule (at least technically speaking of course). Now some of the extra pressure to ensure that I have a "productive" Halloween movie marathon this year is finally off my back. Maybe I can start to relax a little more and stop spending so much damn time writing/posting about stuff here...? ![]() ![]() I honestly can't remember which Universal Monster film I ever saw first mainly because I was 5 years old (or possibly even younger than that) when it originally happened. However, if I had to make my best educated and realistic guess, I want to say it was The Wolf Man (1941) (but it could have easily been Frankenstein (1931) instead). Whatever the exact film was, ironically I wasn't scared at all by it, even at my young and vulnerable age. Instead, it only cemented my endless fascination and enjoyment with monsters and horror which obviously continues to this day. The moral of this story, which I'm struggling to express here, is simply this: If you're a (new) parent, don't be a square. Raise your kids the correct way by letting them watch the Universal Monster films starting at a very young age. That's how my folks raised me back in the day and I thank them dearly for it each and every October/Halloween. No joke! Points Of Interest include: Stars Lon Chaney Jr. (son of the legendary horror icon Lon "the man of a thousand faces" Chaney) as Larry Talbot (a.k.a. The Wolf Man), also features Claude "The Invisible Man" Rains as his on-screen father, some brief "peeping tom" behavior accompanied by initial creepiness directed towards a local lady (not the best first impression to make with women, my good man... ![]() ![]() ![]() Röckzilla's Final Verdict: "Even a dude who bangs his head and drinks his beers by night, needs to stop and watch The Wolf Man Blu when the October moon is bright..." (That's "old gypsy lady" talk for "it's a good film to watch in October." ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Film #32. An American Werewolf In London (1981) ![]() 40 years after Lon Chaney Jr.'s character Larry Talbot terrorized the European villagers depicted in The Wolf Man (1941), another American character would journey to the U.K. and eventually terrorize a European community on his very own in An American Werewolf In London (1981). Interestingly enough, 1981 proved to be a stellar year for lycanthropic horror cinema with the release of other werewolf movies such as Joe Dante's The Howling (1981) & Wolfen (1981). Now there's something to definitely howl about! ![]() ![]() Points Of Interest include: Directed by John "Animal House" Landis, academy award winning special makeup effects by "Monster Maker" Rick Backer (but more details relating to that aspect a little later on), an uncomfortable and unwelcoming reception from locals at the English pub The Slaughtered Lamb, a vicious nocturnal animal attack on the moors (or so it initially seems...), a naked dead dude on the ground, an appearance by Frank "Yoda" Oz, a nightmarish blitzkrieg of nazi werewolf soldiers firing machine-guns, a little boy that can only say "NO!" apparently, humorously sardonic hauntings by the mutilated carcass of a recently deceased best friend (I f*cking LOVE this character! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Röckzilla's Final Verdict: An absolutely phenomenal film from start to finish, horror or otherwise... but remember to stay clear of the moors! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Seeing the circa 1981 punks in An American Werewolf In London (1981) really got me thinking... I seriously need to include more songs by (hardcore) punk bands for this year's Röcktober Fest! Honestly, I should be ashamed of myself for not doing so already. ![]() Well, there's only one way to rightfully make amends here... How about a circa 1983 Bay Area Hardcore Punk song about being a werewolf? Courtesy of the criminally under-appreciated and relatively unknown band Fang! ![]() (And I think Kurt Cobain of Nirvana would even agree with me on that last part there at the very least. ![]() [Show spoiler]

One Missed Call (2003)
![]() A group of students receive mysterious voice messages from their future selves, reacting to their own deaths. A race against time ensues as they try to stop the inevitable while investigating the origin. Takashi Miike is one of the most prolific directors working today. He pumps out about ten films per year, so it's always hit or miss with him. This one was a bit muted and more mainstream compared to some of his other films. It has elements of Final Destination and, of course, classic J-horror tropes. It was quite a fun ride with a very familiar premise: people investigate a strange phenomenon, which leads them to learn about a restless spirit. I especially liked the TV talk show setup, in which they try to capture this mysterious event live on a panel show. It felt like it was poking fun and the completely absurd world of Japanese panel shows. There are two sequels and an American remake, but my journey starts and ends here as I've heard they are all bad. The 2024 version of this would be teens receiving TikTok reels of their demise on their Samsung Galaxy flip phones. SCARES: All standard J-Horror stuff - mysterious girl with long hair, creepy sounds, abuse, tormented and vengeful spirits. CHEESE FACTOR: Not really. I thought I would get a kick out of horrible early 2000s fashion and style but I didn't actually notice anything crazy. KILLS & CREATIVITY: There were some cool moments. One kill in particular was very unexpected. Again, because it's a mainstream J-horror, it boxes itself into a corner a little. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

![]() ![]() 12. Shaun of the Dead ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Shaun of the Dead proudly wears its influences on its sleeves, as it lovingly pays homage to Romero’s classic films. It’s hilarious from beginning to end, has a great cast, and it’s just non-stop fun. While it may have started out wanting to poke fun at the zombie subgenre, it ended up turning itself into one of the best zombie movies ever made. ![]() ![]() 41. The Hitcher ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I usually quit bothering with the skull ratings because I just love them all; I can't really be objective with my precious, the horror movie. But this one deserves extra attention as Second Sight has dropped the release of the year on us. ![]() The movie, the restoration, the extras, the books... This is a five star package all around, as impressive as Turbine's box set of The Frighteners from a few years back, well worth every penny. ![]() |
