i'm doing the same thing Monday, but i'm actually going to try and squeeze in all the Pixar films (on blu-ray that are out now)

start with...

Cars / Ratatouille / Monster's, Inc. / Wall-E / Up / A Bug's Life / Toy Story / Toy Story 2

and then Tuesday morning sprint (or drive, not sure yet ) to Target at 8:00am, and pick up my 4-disc copy of Toy Story 3

uh oh. i have a feeling you might not get as teary-eyed as some of us for two reasons: 1) you've only recently seen these great films, so, unlike me who has seen these films dozens of times for many, many years, you won't have as "long" a connection, but still a connection none the less and 2) you're a cold, heartless b@st@rd that was made very apparent about

DIESEL! we have to get Surf that

wow! for some reason, your list really took me by surprise! i see you having very intellectual conversations with Surf and Squid and i expected to have not even heard of half your list! so i was shocked to see so many films i actually know and have seen a lot of variety. and i love that you have A Lot Like Love on your list i really think it's underrated, and i loved it as well.

as for my list, i was actually just looking it over last night and made some rearrangements, here's my top 20 (favorites, not "best made films")

[Show spoiler]1. Fight Club

I agree though, the emotional side of the film is definitely heavily amplified by having such a long connection to the characters.

Really? Maybe it wasn't an actual spoiler unless you knew the context?

When I've ever had a concern about spoilers or spelling or just mistakes in the reviews, I shoot them a PM and if its an issue they will handle it. They appreciate feedback.

for someone with such a vast array of originality and stories as he directs for his films, i'm really surprised to see him doing a remake. it just doesn't seem like something he'd do.

but i agree, if it gets more people to know the story, that's one thing. but after people see this, how many will know it's even a remake? it's not like remakes say "based off of the film that this is a remake of", so it still leaves the original film in the dark mostly. or people tend to think if there's a remake, then the original must have sucked if it needed to be remade, which is definitely not the case.
Don't forget the original is the highest grossing limited release in US history and has grossed over a hundred million dollars. It's by no means an unknown film. The books have also sold over 40 million copies and Larsson was the second best selling author in the world last year behind Khaled Housseni.

I welcome the story being more well known to American audiences ONLY if the themes that are so essential to the books (i.e. violence against women) are conveyed effectively on screen. We all know I don't like Fincher but it's not that he's a bad director--he has a good handle on the craft and the mood he creates will fit with this source--it's that I simply don't like his films. However, while he does have a good handle on directing he does NOT effectively convey themes in his films. I welcome arguments on this but he really doesn't. That's what concerns me more than anything else--that the film follows the source but omits the themes. One of the best things about the original is that the themes of violence against women are very effectively conveyed.

But, I'm not mad that there's a remake coming. It doesn't change the power of the books and the quality of the original.

You must be kidding. You honestly think the remake will be better than the original?????? The original is a near flawless adaptation of the book with one of the finest female performances in years, one that comes as close to nailing a literary character as I've ever seen. That alone all but guarantees a remake that is several notches below the original.

I'm pretty nostalgic when it comes to my favorites, so many of them I grew up watching and I'm not afraid to admit my love for them

After all, when it comes down to it, I believe movies are about entertainment, so the most cerebral are not always the most enjoyable (take the pure badassery of 300 outranking Perfect Blue for example). Most of the classics I've seen over the past few years were great, but there is a very high, personal threshold movies must cross to enter my heart! Thanks for the feedback btw.

i've been debating adding Pixar / animated films to my list. if i did i know the first 2 Toy Story films would be on it (and probably the 3rd come this next Tuesday), but for some reason i keep them separate from "regular" movies. not really sure why... but i do
I really like every title on your list, with the exception of Blair Witch (which I haven't seen since VHS), Michael Clayton (very boring to me sorry, but I am very interested in why you it made your list), and Garden State which I haven't seen. Nice to see your appreciation for Paul Thomas Anderson. His films are pure genius. You might also like to know that my #30 inspired a scene in your #14 (at least our lists share some connection ).

When I've ever had a concern about spoilers or spelling or just mistakes in the reviews, I shoot them a PM and if its an issue they will handle it. They appreciate feedback.
I'm probably exaggerating a bit

I sent in one PM for Chloe, and it was debatable because he said it was shown in the trailers. Still a spoiler though imo.

I need every ones full attention PLEASE PARTICIPATE. After hearing all your reviews it sounds like you like movies with awesome themes, beautiful shots, good direction and good acting. I seriously without being bias dont see how Benjamin Button doesnt exceed in all these categories. SOME ONE HELP ME. Allow me to see the movie in your eyes. Why does everyone crap on this movie????? Is it because its unrealistic? Why? I need to know!

In addition isnt this the only movie to be put in the Criterion Collection with its initial release? Thats gotta mean something?
Woah you just opened a topic that has been beaten to death but I will gladly respond for the hundredth time.

First, the fact that it's in the Criterion collection means ZERO. Why? Look at the Criterion collection. The Rock is in it. Armageddon is in it. Sometimes the folks at Criterion pick films that are out of place in the totality of its collection. This is such an occasion, although obv not to the extent of the other two. So, the fact that it's in the Collection is irrelevant and immaterial.

Second, Button was never meant to be taken seriously. It was a facetious short story, even acknowledged by Fitzgerald. To extent it into a feature length film that somewhat attempts to mirror Forrest Gump is its first downfall. Its second downfall is that it takes itself seriously when it's source so blatantly doesn't.

Third, the performances are decent at best. I like Pitt quite a bit but he does nothing exceptional in this film--his nomination was a joke, especially considering some of the performances he was nominated over. Blanchett, while a great actress, is off her game here.

I think Fincher did an excellent job directing this film, with the scene on the water being one of the better domestic film scenes of that year. But that doesn't mean it's a good movie. The film is devoid of serious themes and doesn't convey them well, which is a Fincher trademark. I personally, as well as at least half of the viewers of the film, had absolutely ZERO emotional connection to the characters. Ebert elaborates on this to a more efficient degree.

holy crappola DJ that was a surprise! Like Bearcat, I was expecting nearly all 30 to be classic/drama. A very mixed list, particularly for someone who was able to give a theory on Marienbad! <-- a feat of its own!
