Sony Pictures Glory (1989)

Honestly, "Glory" is one of my favorite (or favorite) war films of all time. The acting, the characters, the action, the soaring music, and the final battle scene just make it so darn good. I own it on DVD, but can't wait to upgrade to Blu.

I worry though. I feel like the Blu won't be that great in PQ quality only because the DVD always looked dreary, grainy, and had specks of dirt. I hope they fix the dirt problem, but I'm fine with dreary and grainy, because that's how it was filmed.

Just 6 more days...

I saw on Home Theater Forum that they have a review but I can't post a link. It kinda states to not expect the video to look amazing but for how it was shot, it's appropriate for the film and a good job. They state that the audio is where it really shines.

I personally want this one really bad. I am really looking forward to hearing this lossless track and the beauty of Horner's finest score.

I have been waiting for this movie. It has been delayed too long and I hope they did a good job on it. Being from Mass. and all the history around here it always interested me. Not to mention that the memorial they show at the end of the film is right around the cornner from my work and I walk past it every day. I did not even notice it before I saw the movie.

Can we please get this on 4K now? A lot of junk is being released. Are they waiting until 2019 for a 30 year anniversary edition?

Junk like the Mission Impossible films, the Jack Ryan films, Saving Private Ryan, Forrest Gump, Braveheart Gladiator... that junk? The stuff that sells better than Glory?

I want Glory as much as the next person but it won't be as big a seller as the blockbuster films.

Uh nope, I said junk. Junk like Van Wilder, Cabin In The Woods, The Legend Of Hurcules, Dirty Grandpa, Kick Ass... that junk. “big sellers” and “blockbusters” huh?
Thanks for chiming in though.

You didn't specify any titles, so obviously I was pointing out, factually, that the majority of what's being released is not "junk."

You obviously don't understand how the system works, or how Hollywood as a business is run, but I would honestly guarantee that Kick Ass and Cabin in the Woods would sell better than Glory. It's always cute that just because a few people post that they "want" a title, they automatically assume thousands would also want it and it would justify the enormous cost to produce a huge run of discs. Now if it were streaming or digital, then that would be easy to put out.

It doesn't serve you well to add a snide closing comment, either, because you have zero reason to do so. You posted, so I "chimed" in with reality. If you can't take it, don't post.

The "Uh" was cute too, very obviously passive aggressive of you, but unnecessary and condescending as well.

Oh, 100%. It's a great film, just not a "priority" right now, even though the 4K master is done.

To this day I still don't get how Washington got the Oscar for best supporting actor, but Broderick didn't even get nominated for best actor.

Because he ****ing deserved it. That's why. Don't take away Washington's performance and win out on him because someone else didn't get a nom.

I do agree with you that this film should have gotten a lot more noms. This is one of my favorite movies and it only got what 2-3 noms. This movie came out when the Academy wasn't open to rewarding movies with a heavily minority or black cast or a film themed about black soldiers in the Civil War. This was the same year Do The Right Thing got a couple of nods. They gave the freaking Oscar to Driving Miss Daisy for crying out loud. I do feel Broderick, Elwes, Freeman, and Braugher along with Zwick all deserved recognition that year. Of course they weren't all going to be nominated but more than Washington should have been recognized.

I agree that Washington deserved it. All I am saying is that Broderick deserved at least a nomination.

It's now in 4K at iTunes. I checked UK and Finnish iTunes. It's SDR only at the moment but probably will be upgraded to DV or HDR10 when and if UHD BD is released.

I can not wait to see the final battle sequence in HDR. That sequence is absolutely stunning with the chaotic barrages of muzzle fire, cannons, explosions and the theatrical use of focused red lighting through the massive haze of smoke.

I will already be prepared to squint as someone always seems to be cutting onions when that part comes on.

Glory is my favorite war film. It turns 30 next year. I hope Sony Pictures knows this, and plans to release a 4K/HDR release for the 30th Anniversary. There's absolutely no reason for them to miss out on the opportunity.
