I have to be honest with you, and LET IT BE KNOWN, I mean no disrespect to other members but I'm going to air this out, as we all know settings really come down to personal perference, but the settings you modified in my opinion look horrible. The warm setting drives me nuts, it turns everything to look brown and nutty colored. Reducing the blacklight, kills blacks in my opinion and makes everything in general far to dark to properly decern the difference between blacks and dark greys. The settings I had listed were produced and tweaked by Harvey Electronics in my area, and were done by a meter. I've gone thru all of the major magazines, online articles, and sites, and all list the warm2 option as the best possible setting, and I just don't see it, visually, on my screen. After watching parts of Batman TDK, and Bangcock Dangerous using my settings and the general settings I've seen posted all over with the warm2 and auto features off, I really think my settings look better for this particular tv. I guess the best way to see what looks better would be to have two XBR5's next to eachother with the desired settings and let people vote on them, thank you for your input however. Any different perspective is always welcomed.

In the first year I had my XBR4 I mostly used settings found on http://tjexbr.wiki.zoho.com/
A few of the settings on that site are professional calibrations giving you a fairly realistic picture and I used some of those settings as a base to push the sharpness and color a bit more than recommended. Below are the settings I currently work around. It seems to be the best general setting I've used. The image looks good in a dark or light room, live action, animation, games, etc. Screen shots are in my HT gallery. Give it a try and throw me some feedback if you make changes you prefer. SONY KDL-52XBR4 PICTURE Picture Mode: Cinema Backlight: 3 Picture: 95 Brightness: 50 Color: 62 Hue: R1 Color Temperature: Warm 1 Sharpness: 65 Noise Reduction: Off MPEG Noise Reduction: Off DRC Mode: Off DRC Palette: Off Black Corrector: off Advanced C.E.: Low Gamma: Low Clear White: Low Color Space: Standard Live Color: Off White Balance: R-Gain -1 G-Gain -4 B-Gain 0 R-Bias 0 G-Bias -3 B-Bias 0 Detail Enhancer: High Edge Enhancer: Medium SCREEN Wide Mode: Full Auto Wide: On 4:3 Default: off Display Area: Full Pixel Screen Position: All Set To : 0 VIDEO OPTIONS Motion Enhancer: Med CineMotion: Auto1 Game/Text Mode: Off Video/Photo Optimizer: Video-A Video Color Space (x.v.Color): Auto Photo Color Space: sYCC Color Matrix: -- RGB Dynamic Range: GENERAL Power Saving : OFF |

I went out and bought the DVE disk, the DTS / Dolby Demo disk, and I used the Bluray Retail Demo disk version 2.2 same as Sony displays on their Kiosk units and ran all the tests. My final settings. The more I futzz the same it looks. These are my final settings that I now use on all my HDMI inputs, if you like em sweet, but like they say, to each is own...

Hey guys,
Im looking for some good settings for my Sony KDL-52W4100. I tried the settings that one member posted but they look bad (to me). They look kinda blurry and the colors seemed off. Any help would be truly appreciated. Thanks, CJS234 |

I found something interesting... I was playing around... with my settings two posts up, and dropped the Sharpness all the way down to Min, and set the Motion Enhancer to High, and the CineMotion to Auto1, and there was little to no ghosting or halo effect on high motion objects. The TV looks exactly as it does in the Sony store kiosks, and the picture is almost perfect. I watched Indy Jones Skull for the THX picture and it looks amazing. The picture is so fluid and smooth. I'm going to play around with the Edge & Detail Enhancers and see where it gets me also. Just wanted to share. It all depends on how you like the 120hz motion. Plus I don't think Shapness, after the DVE and Disney calibration disks makes any difference on true 1080p/24p video.
* I now set the Detail Enhancer to Medium & the Edge Enhancer to High and it looks perfect to me... Let me know what you think...! Also the difference between Detail Enhancer from Off to High is night and day, there was NONE if any disernable difference by my eyes with 20/20 vision between Medium and High so I set it to Medium. The detail enhancer seems to do what sharpness would do for lower resolution images but much more cleanly. I am also curious to know if the display units at the Sony Style stores are ISF calibrated for their high end models, and if service menus have been tweaked. I noticed a bit of haloing even on the XBR5 in the Sony store and in Best Buy with Kiosk demo disks so I got the Bluray Experience demo disk the latest version, and the ghosting was little to none. I bet the issue could be tweaked via the service menu, if not a firmware update for the tv. As a tripple side note, I find when the room is cooler, and equipment is cooler and now that I moved the tv a bit more away from the wall there is less artifacting, possibly due to over heating and or sluggish display response due to the higher ambient temperature in the room from the radiator and heat due to the winter cold. So I gave up with the heater and everything seems a bit more stable.... who knows tho it could be a placebo effect. Last edited by onehothemi; 03-05-2009 at 07:05 AM. |

I made the changes and checked the same scene in Spider-man 3 with sharpness reduced and at various color settings. Nothing I did minimized the halo effect in fast moving high detail scenes. Major cities, jungles and window blinds are killers for motion flow on high!!! Sadly, no solution has been found and probably never will. All TV's have their flaws and with the XBR4/5 it is ghosting and the halo effect.
