I've had the chance to watch the first five episodes. The flickering is very annoying.

I must be very lucky then. Me and my gal found the first 3 episodes beautiful. I guess I live in the city too much

Hey my Blu-Ray Brothers, here's a solution from an HD-DVD guy that might just be a workaround to this problem. The flicker is definitely in the media as we know but your display settings may be amplifying the problem to annoying levels. I own a Samsung DLP and I found out that by turning down Sharpness to 0, Contrast to 60 and turning off Digital Noise Reduction and most especially DNIe(if you have a Samsung) has made a huge difference for me. Before I made this change the strobe effect was crazy distracting. Now with these settings, I might not have noticed the problem if I hadn't known to look for it. If nothing else, turn off DNIe and lower that contrast! Those changes have made the biggest difference.

Yup That's basically what I said in post 93.

For most viewing I run Blu-rays like an audiophile listening to a CD through a straight amp with wire.

(although some soft encodes could benefit from a little sharpness)

True, I just wanted to let the Samsung owners know that the key setting for me was DNIe. I ran the setting in demo mode which offers a split screen comparison(I wish all settings allowed for that) and the DNIe side was strobing like crazy while the non-DNIe side was barely noticeable.

Yeah, BBC America says it was RF interference pervasive throughout the series. Others that compare the Discovery HD version say that it wasn't present on broadcast so it must be the transfer quality not RF interference.

Either way it seems that DNIe exaggerates the problem so it's nice to know that turning it off can make this viewing more palatable. I can handle all of the other PQ problems(artifacts, noise, banding and softness) to enjoy some of the most amazing footage. I could not however see past a strobing static effect that screamed, "this guys supposed HD image looks like he's pulling it in using a rabbit ear antenna".

Default Another problem?

I was watching Planet Earth on HD-DVD at my buddies house. It was the ocean epsisode with the whale shark that had a ton of fish swarming around it and I noticed a black spot during that scene that was off center to the lower left. My friend was freaking out at first thinking there was a large group of pixels out on his tv, but it was only for that scene and it went away after. I was about to pick this up on blu-ray, but I was wondering if the blu-ray version had the same problem since I've read that they are identical and use the same codec. Can anyone help me out please?

I have a 46" samsung 1080p LCD and a samsung BD-P1000 via HDMI. I also see the flickering and it is very annoying. It will slightly go away if I turn off DNIe, turn up the brightness, and turn down the contast - but that ruins the rest of the picture.

Does anyone notice that when the BBC emblem and other bright regions disappear to a black screen, it leaves impression in the darkness on the screen. - before you blame it on the TV, I have paused the picture, switched to OTA broadcast, and changed it back and the impression is still there. Its either the BD-P1000 or the BD disc. Anyone else?
