Star Trek Generations - may not be action oriented but you didn't find out that it was the christening of the Enterprise B until the champagne bottle exploded against the ship's hull after the opening credits.

Star Trek Nemesis - nice start traveling through space going through the opening credits and then entering the Romulan home world. Romulus was never shown before this.

Men In Black - Following the dragonfly all the way through the opening credits dodging all of the oncoming cars only to be splattered on the windshield of the illegal alien smugglers' vehicle.

the opening scene of star wars (a new hope) a real classic, when the imperial ship appeared on screen for the first time wow... from that point on science-fiction movie would never be the same forever.

Definitely going to have to agree with these two, these earn their price in the first five minutes...

The Dark Knight - It always hits me when the music pops as the guy's running down the stairs.
The Two Towers - After what happened in the first one, even having read the books, this scene was just one of the greatest ever.

Honorable mentions go to...

Saving Private Ryan - It's Normandy, I mean, what else do I need to say...
The Rock - Ed Harris voice over, general badassity of it, I like this one.
28 Weeks Later - I agree the intensity of this scene is amazing.

Okay, I have a long list as I LOOOOVE Film in general and an opening scene can foreshadow so much about the story of a film, so...yeah...

Sunset Boulevard -- Starting out seeing the name of the film as painted on the side of a sidewalk, and then the classic Noir intro was pure awesome.

To Kill A Mockingbird -- Way more complicated then just a box of knickknacks.

Star Wars -- Well duh. The second it started in the first theater it played in, Cinema was changed forever.

Jurassic Park -- SHOOT HEEERRR!!!!

Once Upon a Time in the West -- Can you get more Western? Epic.

Pretty much any and every opening scene Hitchcock ever did. I defy you to show me one that was not simply brilliant.

Pulp Fiction -- Tarantino's pretty damn good at intros.

Desperado -- and in walks the biggest Mexican I have ever seen!

Clerks -- I assure you we're open.

Office Space -- honestly, is there even a line of dialogue spoken in this scene? and yet it's still one of the funniest openings to any movie EVER.

Memento -- the second it started you knew you were in for something NEW.

Eastern Promises -- Someone gets their throat slit in a most gruesome manner within the first 5 minutes, in the first scene of the movie? YES.

V for Vendetta -- VVVVVVery Awesome.

2001: A Space Odyssey....can we really get away with not mentioning this?

Pineapple Express -- Yeah, it's a new one, but a personal favorite.

The Dark Knight -- It's already been mentioned ad nauseum by now.

Little Shop of Horrors -- I sometimes wake up in the morning singing "Skid Row".

No Country for Old Men -- Okay. I'll be a part of that world.

The Big Lebowski -- Sometimes there's a man, well, he's just the man for his time.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off -- The clammy hands. I know it's kind of childish, but...you lick your palms.

Princess Mononoke -- It's just good, got a chase scene in the first scene of the movie.

The Majestic -- Where they're literally tearing apart his script and adding in little boys and their dogs, "here's a what if".

That's pretty much all I can think of right now, but I think they all belong on a list of "best of" opening scenes.

:P

Kill Bill Vol. 2 (i remember screaming "OUCH" when he pulled the trigger)
american psycho (best lines in a movie, but i hate so much about the movie at the same time, it needs an edit by Me)
Star Wars: A New Hope
Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith (if it had a re-edit by Me, i'd get rid of some of the dialogue by Hayden Can't-act-ianson)

I would have to go it Air Force One with the S.O.F capturing that Russian general.

then Star Was RoTS and NH

With Saving Private Ryan I always liked the start before Normandy when he is walking past all the head stones kinda makes you think about all the lives given for freedom.

TOP GUN for sure!!!! Nothings cooler than the little briefing on what Top Gun is and then boom the Top Gun logo appears. Then all the F-14's (which by the way are one of the coolest jets ever created) landing and getting ready to take off.

F-14's, Highway to the Danger Zone, and DTS-MA....all you need for one great opneing scene

Thumbs up

I gotta chip in that intense opener from Mission:Impossible 3!
As the music starts with the lit match, it leaves you pondering how Ethan Hunt got into that situation in the first place.
