Only at select theaters. I went to one of the all day showings of the first two EEs followed by ROTK. Never do that again, so much fatigue by the end we didn't really care about the movie.

Are you talking a wide scale thing, or select theaters? Cause if it was a wide scale thing, I know what you're talking about (hell, I went to all three - word to the wise, skip the caffeinated drink, especially the large, unless you're a masochist). That was actually for the Blu-ray box set of the extended editions of all three. It was three Tuesdays in a row, one each Tuesday. Why Tuesday? Because the day that they did Return of the King was the day the set came out.

Yes. There were screenings of Fellowship EE and TT EE on the same day before King came out.

I see. It could be possible then that the EE of An Unexpected Journey might get released around the time that The Desolation Of Smaug comes out theatrically.

Fine, the extended versions of each film are still over 30 to 40 minutes long. That's still a lot more than what they're going to add to The Hobbit.

I still believe they could have added those 13 minutes in the original release a few months ago. I mean, they could have added them to the theatrical release and the film would have barely been over 3 hours long! 182 minutes to be precise. That's about the same running time as the theatrical versions of Fellowship of the Ring and the Two Towers, and 20 minutes shorter than Return of the King.

I understand the reasoning behind the release of the extended versions of the LOTR trilogy, because they were over half an hour longer each (more than 40 minutes, in the case of Return of the King). But this? This just feels like they're trying to emulate the same business model they used for Lord of the Rings (starting with the brilliant idea of making three films out of The Hobbit).

I really want to see these epic 13 minutes (which should be beyond epic, if they warrant a new release).

I still can't believe we're only getting one commentary. I really was looking forward to the others, esp. a cast commentary.

I wouldn't be surprised if AMC has 3D screenings of The Hobbit EE and Smaug that same day or week.

Honestly, I think AUJ can, in fact, be dramatically improved even with only 13 minutes added. It just depends on what that 13 minutes consists of. Already, that Bilbo/Elrond scene elevates the film for me - because it gives Bilbo an added layer character development (which pays off when he decides to leave Rivendell with the dwarves). In the theatrical cut, Bilbo felt forgotten about in the middle section, and this scene brings him back into focus and informs his arc for the rest of the film. So even if we only get a handful of moments like this, I'll be extremely happy with the new cut.

As a writer, I would love to see something about the about the process of adapting the book into three films, I think that would be an interesting documentary, but I don't think we're going to get any of that, according to the list of special features.

I noticed the time difference is less than 15 minutes. Not much extra material. Any word on what we are getting out of these additional minutes?

Besides the scene in Rivendell that was shown today, off the top of my head I remember
[Show spoiler]scenes like Radagast and Gandalf exploring a barrow tomb, scenes of the Dwarves washing in Rivendell (this is what the fleeting nudity is from what I've heard), and scenes in the Shire where Bilbo meets Gandalf as a child.

I told myself I wasn't going to watch that scene they released today but I'm glad I watched it. Even just the 60 seconds or so that watched added to the story and I'm optimistic for the rest of the scenes doing the same.

Japanese packaging is interesting:

The slipbox itself resembles the LOTR EE packaging far more than anything we've seen to date. That and a digipak inside would be perfect. I wonder if there's any chance that the current art we're seeing can be removed to reveal this underneath? It seems unlikely but it would be a nice touch. The disc art shows consistency with the LOTR EE's, so it makes sense to have the packaging do so as well.
