but what i'd like to know is, in the absence of 'ultimate collector's edition' banner on this one, are there special features exclusive to the 4k version not included in this one, or does the 4k qualify as being an 'ultimate collector's edition' simply in virtue of being the one that includes the movie on a 4k disc?

Yes.

The 4K disc doesn't have any extras on it, as far as I know.
The Blu-ray disc included with the 4K 'ultimate collector's edition' is identical to this one.

appears like lightly DNR'ed redone (I think they scanned it and reo-touched colored it digitally in some system and then back out to master film for the re-release in 1997) 35mm

I finally ordered this on Amazon a few days ago, along with the Kung Fu Panda 4K preorder, so when it arrives, I will be fully up-to-date with all of the hand-drawn animated films Disney has released on 4K Blu-ray to date! I don't know why did I take so long with The Little Mermaid in particular, but now that I took the opportunity to make the move recently, I am now prepared to go after anything and everything Disney decides to release next in the 2D animation 4K Blu-ray domain.

May need to recheck, all I'm getting is "This is not a valid code." Disney codes tend not to expire. Only those greedy Warner codes do that, sadly.

Upgraded my Anniversary Edition Blu-ray to the 4K recently. In terms of packaging, the slipcover is nicer as there is embossing on Ariel and company, unlike with the Blu-ray version.

The glow in Flotsam and Jetsam's eyes the first time we see them really pops in HDR.
