On IG you posted a pic of a FCE pin. Some were asking about printing up t-shirts with the logo. Is that something that could happen?

I've been enjoying the Primetime Panic boxset, and watching Dreams Don't Die last night was amazing. Ike Eisenmann is a likable enough protagonist, but Trini Alvarado and Israel Juarbe stole the show. I enjoyed their characters and struggles more. Paul Winfield is great as a policeman trying to give people a second chance without being too preachy. Paul and Ike were also in Star Trek 2 the same year as this TV movie. Fantastic film, with great Brad Fiedel score. Like Paul Winfield's character says, "Life is full of chances. Take one."

Yes! And to add to the STAR TREK references, Juarbe’s character goes by Captain Kirk and calls his limo the Enterprise.

Currently watching Rancho Deluxe and noticed the back says English subtitles, but I do not see them offered. Is this an oversite like with Walking the Edge?

Hit your subtitle button. Subs are most definitely there.

Thanks! Didn't know you could do that. I was just looking for them on the menu screen and didn't see the option.

Not only did Fun City give you a great movie, but they also taught you how to more efficiently change subtitles on all of your releases... pretty cool!

I posted about this in the Primetime Panic thread but I'll post here as well.

I'm an hour into Death Ride To Osaka and whenever someone speaks Japanese the subtitles say "(Speaking Japanese)" and that's it. While the majority of the film is in English, there are Japanese parts throughout this film. At first I thought it was just the beginning, but whenever the customers or gangs have spoken parts the majority is spoken in Japanese, and even some of the dialog spoken by the American actresses is in Japanese, although that's fairly uncommon. Wondering why these parts aren't translated? Thank you

I'm not familiar with any of these titles, but generally speaking, if the film never intended the viewer to know what someone is speaking in another language then it isn't translated in subtitles.

There are scenes where Japanese is spoken and there are no English speaking characters in the scene. I’m not sure what the point of these scenes would be if we weren’t supposed to understand them. If there was a character that didn’t speak Japanese involved I could understand that they might want the viewer to have the same experience as the character, but that’s not the case here

I understand your example, but if it was never in English in the original presentation, why would it be now? I've certainly turned on subtitles/captioning in moments like this in other films, but usually there's no translation when it wasn't intended.

So you're suggesting the English subtitles were part of the original presentation? NBC or ABC or whoever aired this back in the 80's displayed English subtitles for only the English speaking parts throughout the entire film? If not, then this is a miss imo as I am going to assume the subtitles for this release were newly created and didn't air.

Edit: I just searched on google and I found someone on IMDB who speaks Japanese (take it with a grain of salt) that said some of the Japanese dialog didn't make any sense, almost like the actress didn't know her lines but they just ran with it. I guess this is a case of 80's ignorance and not really 'a miss'. You were right about it not being translated originally. I would have liked to have had it done in 2021 as it wouldn't have taken much effort since the subtitles were created anyhow, but it is what it is. Still happy to own this.

Above and beyond that I thought the movie was good. She couldn't hit a note if her life depended on it, but I thought it was a decent watch. Prefer the widescreen presentation.

No, that's not what I suggested at all. All I'm saying is that I've seen films where there are extended conversations spoken in another language and there's no translation presented in any form. General example off the top of my head: In a war film, an American is captured by a non-English speaking army and there's never an English subtitle in the film because the viewer is supposed to be in the same situation as the American character.

OK, just seeing your Edit now. Yeah, it's a real shame that so often in the past opportunities for translation were treated so callously. But it's unfortunately quite common. I imagine even a TV show like MASH probably regularly had Korean characters speaking gibberish instead of their language, with no subtitles either.

Okay, now you have an obligation to put this out on Blu-ray.
Agreed that "Drying Up the Streets" should be part of Fun City Editions!

After getting overlooked in my unwatched disc pile (which is more resembling a tower these days) for far too long, I finally got around to watching SMILE this weekend.

Man, what a fantastic flick! Being a kid of the 70s, I totally enjoyed it. Absolute flashback to a groovy, bygone era. Bruce Dern's interview in the extras was cool, too. Another great blind buy for me from Fun City.

We never got a dialogue list or subtitle or caption track from the licensor (Multicom). Not sure if the Japanese dialogue was previously translated, such as when it originally aired on U.S. television. To translate foreign language dialogue is not cheap, easy or without complications.

If the language being spoken on set was not consistent with the English script, then we might have a Japanese to English translation that is, in part, "gibberish" or, at the very least, not very useful or accurate to the script.

We know from Jonathan Kaplan that some of the Japanese spoken by Mako and Soon-Tek Oh was off-script: i.e. they were actually deriding Asian stereotypes in U.S. film and television at the time.
