I don't think there's any technical difference between the SACD layer on a hybrid disc and a DSD single-layer disc. The only possible way the hybrid discs could sound worse is if your player is having trouble reading the disc and is using error correction to play it and gets some bits wrong.

Like we both said, we're aware that technically it should sound the same. It just seems that native DSD discs sound better. Again, it could simply be a matter of higher quality recordings being picked when deciding to bring an album to SACD and/or the people involved simply doing a better job of the mixing.

I am so stoked!! I found a copy of Depeche Mode Violator SACD in 5.1 for $50 including shipping! I've never seen this less than $200 when I've looked for it. I can't wait to hear this, it's the high resolution surround mix I've wanted the most for a long time.

Is it surround? Those pretty much are the only ones that appeal to me any more. I got a few the last year or two.

I believe it's like the Self titled release and is Stereo only.

Which for me is fine as that's what my setup is anyway for SACD.

With stereo recordings any more I'm more likely to listen to cds on my old portable cd player. Just how it goes. (Maybe why even that doesn't happen all that much any more.)

But a new years resolution is to try and get my home theater system, which is finally sounding pretty decent with films, to also sound better than it does now with music, surround and otherwise.

(Speaking of which, one tweak I may actually get around to trying is a standalone phono pre-amp to use in place of the one built in to my receiver. The rest will likely (have to) remain the same.)

It's funny, I have little interest in high resolution stereo only releases. I love the 5.1 music experience.

So funny how I know BJ's hits, but yet am SO unfamiliar with the actual accompanying albums which is a bit of a shame.
