I may be able to resist getting this if the critical consensus on the new transfer is a big old thumbs down.

Personally I don't think the current transfer is that great.

For me, the new transfer would have to be pretty bad to not be an improvement on that.

It's not a huge improvement and the compression could be better but it does have better detail:

the fabric on the chair and the wood deck outside is better resolved

Audio is an improvement, isn't it?

What about these color timing changes I keep hearing about?

I actually really like the color timing on the new release. It was really gorgeous during the epic bank robbery shootout. I got rid of the US release before I got this one to do comparisons but I didn't really notice all that big of a difference with the color timing between the 2. Only with certain moments.

How is it different from the previous release?

Is it a drastic change like the Goodfellas transfer?

It has a cooler look. I didn't find it as drastic as Goodfellas at all (even though I love the Goodfellas remaster). I noticed immediately that the Goodfellas remaster was noticeably darker when I first watched it. It took me some thinking with trying to pick out the differences with Heat which I'm very familiar with as well.

Wow! I just noticed on the latest reviews on this site someone gave Heat a 2/5! Seriously?!

Maybe they have only seen it once? I didn't like the movie on first viewing as I thought it was bloated. However, it is one of those movies that gets better every time you watch it.

Yeah that could be possible. I loved it my first time but I do agree it gets better every time I watch it.

Color grading is not a flaw, it's a creative choice. Flaws are encoding artifacts, macroblocking, DNR, etc...

The new version definitely looks slightly cropped. Mann himself signed off on the new transfer and AR aside, i like the changes. But, the cropping bothers me.

It is? Is it from the top and bottom?

No, it doesn't. It simply means it's not a flaw.
