I apologise if this has been answered a million times already but the thread is huge now and I've dug through quite a lot of it and found nothing thus far:
Is the 1080p disc with the 4K UHD BD a new 1080p version of the 4K, or is it the same as the 2015 BD? ... Or are those two descriptions fundamentally the exact same thing? |

Rewatched this at the weekend, I hadn't seen the movie since the 90s, really loved it. Disc looks ok but due to the nature of the look of the movie I don't think it's anything spectacular. The movie itself has a great visual style though.
It's been so long since I've seen Gary Oldman give a proper acting performance I forgot how great he used to be. |

Watch Immortal Beloved. It's the Amadeus of Beethoven movies. Oldman is spectacular. |

Oh I've seen that, years ago. That was when Oldman was a proper actor and each time he was cast in a movie it was really exciting to see what his performance would be like. He just phones it in/ does the same thing these days.

Just like Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino. They're more like caricatures of themselves. Kind of sad. Every so often they break out, but not very often. |

Well now that I've turned 40 and I can sympathize with the reality of becoming a caricature of yourself as you get older, so I don't really hold it against them.
Anyway, good to see this thread bumped. It's always a good reminder to rematch it and now is the perfect season for it. |

I rewatched this Saturday night. Such a visually stunning movie. The opening scene is one of my favs.

I've found this a really testing disc, because of all the dark with brighter highlights during vast parts of it's runtime.
It looked absolutely atrocious on the LG 850V, and really showed up how awful that sets dimming was. I don't want to sound like an advert for OLED, but it's the only technology I've seen this disc look really good on. I haven't seen it on the newer FALDs, but I suppose it looks great on those too providing the dimming isn't overly aggressive. I love that it still looks like film with all the grain too. DNRing this film would have been an atrocity given it's artistry is very much in the traditional filming sense. |

I always thought Keanu was an odd choice and was a bad fit for the movie but then I read the original book and realized that he is pretty spot on. There is an innocent, childlike, and almost stupidly earnest quality to the characters in the book and I think it comes across well in the casting without being too overbearing.

I don't believe he was the first choice for the role and may have been a last minute addition (hence the lack of vocal training). Some have said Coppola originally wanted Johnny Depp. There have been other last minute switcheroos like Sean Connery in The Hunt for Red October and Kevin Costner in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. They all suffered from a lack of accent training since they had no time to prepare. Last edited by FilmFreakosaurus; 10-05-2020 at 04:09 PM. |

I have a Sony and the film look beautiful. It hasn't looked this good since its original release on DVD. The color was always off. Also, the Laserdisc had great color. Thankfully it's been restored to the way it should be on UHD.
Also, I love the new Atmos mix - hearing sounds from above adds a wonderful new dimension. |

Yeah, they did a good job with the remix, which is the same as what was included on the prior Blu-ray. |

Everyone always mentions Reeves, and when I was younger I always assumed Harker to be a major character. The truth is though Harker is very much a throwaway character who is purely there as a plot device, as evidenced by many adaptations merging him with or giving the opening part of the book to the Renfield character because they don't need Harker.
I think the character is remembered more for him being in the best part of the original book. The character is just a door into the world and the other characters. So yeah, basically Reeves doesn't bother me one bit because he isn't that important to the film. The film is carried by Oldman, Hopkins and Ryder. Last edited by oddbox83; 10-05-2020 at 05:11 PM. |
