If it's any consolation, you do get used to it and I ended up really liking it after a few watches, and after I gave up trying to "fix" it.

I'm on a KS8000, and it seems OLED owners had a better experience with this one, probably because that illegible black just gets nice and "true" black, while the other dark elements presumably look normal against the black.
I have the same TV and the dark scenes were fine. The whole movie is darker in 4k intentionally, but it's never dark to the point of missing detail. I think we had discussions before about your KS8000 and maybe using dynamic contrast or other processing modes? Try Ghost in the Shell's ending on standard movie mode and you should see the detail just fine, unless your panel is messed up.

Must have been someone else. I don't use any of that stuff in order to retain detail. I only use dynamic contrast for games. It's just this movie. That's why people have problems with it.

Well I'm just sayin' I have the same TV and it's far from "too dark to see anything."

There are way too many people who think this UHD is dark and dull - it's not the TV or the settings. Almost all my UHD discs look beautiful, but GitS is underwhelming.

Don't misunderstand what I am saying. It is definitely dark as hell, and intentionally so obviously. What I am contradicting is that it is *too* dark, or "too dark to see anything." I saw everything clear as day, even though it's a very dark image. That's one of the benefits of HDR actually, retaining detail in darker imagery.

Whoever graded this used the abilities of HDR to keep the overall image darker while retaining deep color and detail. Arrival was similar, and people complained about that. In the end it's a personal taste thing, not the disc.

"This disc didn't burn my retinas. It wasn't 'Pacific Rim'! It ****ing sucks!"

Yeah, no.

It's a very good looking disc, in actuality. Speaking of detail in darker portions of the image, you can make out the camo pattern on the spider-tank in the UHD/HDR version, but it's hard as hell to see in the standard blu-ray.

Also didn't notice any issues with banding or overbearing artifacts. It's a solid transfer. IMO, it's the most under-appreciated transfer of 2017.

90% of it is great. The deep dive into the network, the final scene with the tank, and a handful of other shots, are the only problems.

I think it's because the baseline shadow isn't as pitch black on my TV as it would presumably be on say, SweetieMan's OLED (who thought the whole thing was one of the best of the year when it came out)... so intentionally dark objects and forms are like putting gravel on gravel. Whereas putting gravel on pitch black onyx ink, the gravel would still stand out pretty well. It's not impossible to see, just takes a little effort and concentration. Being familiar with the content of the scenes, after several viewings, also helps.

for the past 4 months I see about 30 4k movies , but none of them has this dark scene problems and for the comparison I watched 1080p version of this move and in dark scenes was way better watchable then this 4k release

All I'm saying, is once In a while you'll run into several hdr graded movie that seems dark, and having a TV with extra horsepower comes in handy to prevent that and overcome it. I know alot of content on Amazon had the same issue. Having a beefier TV will prevent that. Notice it's all tvs under 1000 nits that have complaints about dark pictures. Never see anyone with A Z9D complain of a dark picture.

I don't think the picture for GITS is too dark or bad or anything. Perhaps underwhelming is a good way to describe it like ergalthema stated in a previous post. I was expecting something completely else aesthetic wise but apparently the director had something else in mind. I'm actually cool with it now, having seen the UHD a couple of more times since I bought it. I also really like the movie itself more and more so in the end, this was money well spent.

I really think the main problem is that cyberpunk future screams bright neon city, but instead it's the opposite. People expected something very different, me included.

I have to admit that I also was one of the persons who screamed it’s too dark. I have seen it a couple of times now and I really like it the way it is right now.
Some scenes are really beautiful

Maybe one day I will change my mind about grain too

I thought it was just my TV that was unable to handle deep blacks but it seems others are finding this movie too dark as well. It's a shame because I thought the cinematography was really good when I saw it at the theater.

It is definitely darker than in the theater, which took me by surprise when I first watched it on UHD. However, I didn’t have any problems with seeing detail or it being too dark to see what’s happening. The guests who have watched it with me didn’t say anything about it and neither did my wife (who tends to be rather blunt when it comes to PQ). I do think our expectations of what we thought it would look like factors in. I have a KS8000.

I haven't watched it yet but the BD has a brighter image more in line with expectations for the genre. It's not crazy bright or anything, but brighter than the UHD. Might be a movie where some like the BD more.

Nobody else having lip synch problems with this movie? Watching the 4K for the first time and the lip synch is way off. I've had a couple of other movies where it's been off a little but not this bad.

edit. weird thing I chapter skipped back to the beginning of the movie and now the synch is on. Wonder what caused that?

Curious as to what type of player you are using.

$k - I see what you did there.

I don't have any sync issues with this title - and I'm very sensitive to that sort of thing. What's your setup? What other UHD titles have no sync issues?

I have the Philips BDP7502 4K player hooked to a Vizio 50" M series TV via HDMI and cable box to TV via HDMI. The TV is hooked to a Sony soundbar via optical cable.

As I said I've had slight synch issues on a couple of 4K's and also watching TV through the cable box.

I was thinking of hooking the TV to the soundbar via HDMI see if that helps.
