It is pretty widely regarded...... I couldn't find what number it is on AFI's list, but I'm pretty sure it's pretty high up there.

From the June 2009 newsletter:

CONTEST

Last month, we announced that Amazon and Criterion were joining up to let viewers decide which of five selected titles would soon be released in a Blu-ray edition...the top vote getter was Howards End, which you'll soon be seeing in a Criterion Blu-ray special edition...
Guess they're officially adding it to the Collection.

Since it's a Swedish Film, I doubt it's on a list at The American Film Institute.

That being said, it is a terrific foreign-language film up there with some of the best I have seen, Le Gran Illusion, Seven Samurai, The Lower Depths(Kurosawa), La Belle et La Bete, etc.

For people who haven't seen it, it is a difficult film to surmise. It's somewhere between a conversation with Death and Odysseus' jorney home from Troy.

It's funny, I couldn't find it on IMDb's Top 250 the other day, even though I knew to look for the Swedish title and the film's listing showed it ranked #104.

Agreed, but that doesn't explain "The Third Man" making the list.

But The Third Man is a British film.

Last Year at Marienbad - fantastic package!

I am done watching now. I also spent more than an hour going between my Optimum disc and this Criterion presentation -- big difference. The Criterion Blu-ray transfer has been personally supervised and approved by Mr. Resnais. He has even insisted that Criterion include the original unrestored audio track, in addition to the newly restored one, and the US distributors have obliged. Impressive work.

Of course, the most important question remains: What would it take to bring Mr. Antonioni's L'eclisse, L'avventura and La notte to Blu-ray?

Will stay late (after midnight) to finish the review.

Who cares. Last Year at Marienbad is better than all three!

One of the co-producers was David O. Selznick, that's why it's within AFI guidelines.

OOOOH!!! pro-bassoonist is going to be upset!!!

Sinfully, the only Antonioni I've seen is Blowup, which I LOVED. I have the Sony R1 DVD of The Passenger and the BFI Blu-ray of Red Desert, but I have not had the opportunity to watch either...yet.

Well after nearly 500 blu-rays, I finally entered the Criterion Club with The Last Emperor, and I'm glad I did. My next one will probably be Bottle Rocket during the next sale.

Anyone else get the email from Amazon that announces "Howards End" will be part of the Criterion Blu-ray collection? If you scroll down there's link to blu-ray releases for all of the other contest entries as well...

Looks like all of he contest entries will be on Blu-ray afterall.

Yeah I thought that too. I was just surprised that Amazon would be so on the ball.
